The legal description of the 0.23 -acre property is Lot 58, Elk Mountain Subdivision. The permit and record drawing was provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID #2729-202-05-042). The subject OWTS consists of one 1250 -gallon, two-compartment concrete septic tank. Effluent gravity flows to an 18' x 36' pipe and gravel soil treatment area (STA). Individual Sewage Disposal System Permit 87011 documents this system: The system was sized to accommodate 3 bedrooms. The permit received final approval on November 20, 1987. The septic tank is located southeast of the residence. A clean out is located between the house and the septic tank. The manhole lids on the septic tank are accessible from grade. A built-in concrete baffle is present on the inlet side of the septic tank and a PVC tee on the outlet side of the septic tank. We recommend installing an effluent filter on the outlet tee of the septic tank. If installed, this filter must be cleaned annually, or as needed. Liquid levels in the septic tank were normal at the time of our inspection. We measured solids in the septic tank and found approximately 1 -inch of scum and 12 -inches of sludge in the first compartment and no scum and approximately 8 -inches of sludge in the second compartment of the septic tank. Pumping of the septic tank is not necessary at this time. We recommend pumping the septic tank in the next year, if the house continues to be occupied. There was snow cover over the STA at the time of our inspection. We did not observe inspection ports in the STA. We walked approximate STA and found no evidence of surface saturation or failure at the time of our inspection. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. Recommendations: • Install effluent filter on the outlet tee of the septic tank. If installed, this filter must be cleaned annually, or as needed. • Pump septic tank in the next year, if house continues to be occupied. This report and a completed OWTS Use Permit Application must be submitted to the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department.
