Subject: Individual Sewage System Design for the Rolles Residence,
Lot 10, East Owl Creek Subdivision, numbered as 1130 Cluny Road
Dear John,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd.,
has performed a soils study and percolation testing for the design
and construction of a septic system for the proposed residence at
the subject site. This letter details our design recommendations
and some thoughts on alternatives.
Proposed Construction and Building Site:
The residence is to be a three bedroom, three bath home with an
additional two one-half bathrooms and a second laundry. The
building is proposed to be a one to two story home stepped up the
slope.
.Minimum Pitkin County Requirements:
The percolation rates measured were averaged at an average of 12
minutes per inch. However, the underlying bedrock below the soils
is considered an unsuitable condition for conventional on-site
wastewater disposal systems.
The minimum Pitkin County requirements for this installation are,
therefore that a site-specific design be done by a Registered
Professional Engineer. The basis of the design is calculated on an
average daily sewage flow to the systems of approximately 450
gallons per day.
Recommended On-site Wastewater Disposal Design:
While we are not attempting to complete the site specif is design of
the engineering firm, there are several items which we feel are
important to consider and incorporate into the system.
1) Although not required, we have selected to divided the
flow into a black water fraction of 330 gallons per day and a
gray water fraction from the laundries of 120 gallons per day.
It is then possible to use a combination of an engineered sand
mound for the wastewater generated from the residence and a
more conventional, shallow gray water bed for the laundry that
maintains a two foot depth of suitable soil from the bottom of
the bed to the fractured bedrock.

The soil texture encountered in the percolation test holes was the
same as in the profile excavation, a silty loam about 18 to 30
inches thick and a sandy clay loam to 4 feet in depth.
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard
percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on
Figure 1. The set of test holes was hand dug to a depth of two
feet to adjust for the proposed engineering design and shallow,
fractured bedrock conditions. Four inches of gravel were placed on
the bottom of each hole.
Percolation Testing:
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed engineered mound
area Northeast of the residence. This testing was performed in
three shallow holes excavated with hand tools to a depth of twenty-
four inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked by adding water
the evening before and at intervals during the day, before
beginning the percolation test in the late evening.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I.
These results indicate the silty loam soils and fractured shale
claystone have an average percolation rate of 12 minutes per inch,
a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria.
Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally
accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal system
design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in
this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at
the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature
and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site
may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and
may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals
conditions different from those described. This office should be
advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may
reevaluation of our recommendations.

Dear John,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd.,
performed a soils study and percolation tests on the subject
property to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We
conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County
Regulations Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on July 9 and July
20, 1993. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface
conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter to Banner
Engineering and the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at
your earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this
individual sewage system.
Proposed Construction:

The ground surface in the proposed area of the absorption field,
appears natural and slopes to the Northeast at a grade of 12% to
20%.
Subsurface Conditions:
The soi 1 prof i le pits and borings were approximately within 10 feet
of the proposed septic system absorption areas. All revealed that
the soils within the building envelope portions of this lot are a
silty loam topsoil overlaying a sandy clay loam to a depth of two
to four feet. At a depth of three to four and one half feet
fractured and weathered claystone bedrock was encountered. This
bedrock became harder and more consolidated with depth, but could
still be excavated with equipment.

2) The flows would require a septic tank of 1000 gallons
minimum volume, and a minimum of 460 square feet of engineered
mound bed for the black water fraction. The gray water system
would consist of a 750 gallon septic tank and minimum of 235
square feet of seepage bed. Approximately 140 square feet of
seepage bed constructed with "Infiltrator" leaching chamber
units could be substituted for the gray water system bed.
3) It is advisable to excavate the gray water bed as shallow
as possible, to a depth of no more than two and one-half feet.
4) It is advisable to use dosing siphons to equalize the flow
to the engineered mound bed.
5) There is the potential for a perched water table during
heavy precipitation or seasonal runoff in these site
conditions. An underdrain system is recommended at the uphill
end of each septic system disposal bed. This provides a drain
to prevent buildup of water and a seasonally saturated
condition within and under the systems.
6) We recommend using a 1250 -gallon concrete septic tank with
manhole lids and risers to the surface of the ground for the
blackwater system. The extra detention time provided by the
larger septic tank volume is beneficial to the system
operations when peak or surge loading occur.
Therefore, the suggested design incorporate the alternatives listed
below. We recommend that the final septic system configuration
consist of three ETA trenches, each 100 feet long.

I. EFFLUENT PUMP WILL INCLUDE "PIGGYBACK"
CONTROL FLOAT DESIGNED TO MONITOR LEVEL
IN PUMPING CHAMBER.
2. A BACK-FLOW PREVENTER SHOULD NOT BE
INSTALLED SO THAT EXCESS EFFLUENT IN
SUPPLY LINE CAN DRAIN BACK INTO PUMPING
CHAMBER AND AVOID FREEZING.
3. THE FLOAT LEVEL CONTROLS SHOULD BE SET
ON A CYCLE TO ALLOW 160 GALLONS TO BE
PUMPED IN EACH DOSE.
4. CONSTRUCTION OF THE SYSTEM SHOULD
BEGIN WITH GRUBBING EXISTING TOPSOIL
FROM THE MOUND BASE AND GRADING
EXISTING SLOPE TO 2% AND 14% AS SHOWN.
MEDIUM SAND SHOULD THEN BE SPREAD ON
MIRAFI FABRIC. NEXT THE "INFILTRATOR"
UNITS SHOULD BE INSTALLED.
5. PUMP POWER SUPPLY BOX SHOULD BE ON A
SEPARATE CIRCUIT THAN THE ALARM.
6. FOLLOW EXISTING CONTOURS WITH
PROPOSED MOUND.
