Changes must be approved by this Department and the engineer prior to construction. The design is for a 1500 gallon two-compartment concrete septic tank with an AX -20 secondary treatment unit. Sewer pipe from the tank must be in the recorded easement for a shared trench. A manifold distributes effluent to a gravelless chamber bed with 6 rows of 9 'Quick4" chambers for a total of 54 chambers. Six inches of concrete sand is to be placed under the chambers. Perforated laterals are suspended within the chambers. This design is based on ground water at 5.5 feet. The drainfield must be installed at a maximum depth of 1 foot. A 3 to 1 slope must be constructed from the top of the drainfield to existing grade. The existing OWTS must be properly abandoned. This Permit must be kept on-site during installation. The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an "as -build" letter to this Department with in 30 days of the final inspection, unless a longer period of time has been agreed upon, in writing. This Department must also be called for the final inspection with a minimum of 48 hours notice. Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the requirements of the Pitkin County OWTS Regulation. This permit is conditioned upon the property owner(s) providing for regular inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of the system by qualified personnel, in accordance with the manufacture's recommendations and the requirements of the Pitkin County OWTS Regulation. The site is close to the Roaring Fork River and the design is based on an observation of the cut bank on 10/3/07 in lieu of a profile hole that could be monitored during a period of seasonal high ground water. The design is based on no groundwater and for a subsurface absorption bed to be placed in the same area as an existing shed. I conducted a site visit yesterday, June 2"d. On the next level down (about 4 ft lower) I observed vegetation which indicated moist soils. In this area there was a small fenced area with a pump for irrigating which appeared to pull water from a standpipe. The depth of the water in this pipe indicates that groundwater is at 4 feet below the level of the shed. Please call to discuss this. We are commenting on the ground water conditions at the subject site and confirming OWS design parameters. The site visit was made on June 5h 2008. We measured ground water through a 12 -inch corrugated pipe located on a lower bench, next to the proposed drain field location. The ground water was 18 -inches below existing grade on the lower bench. The drain field location is 4 feet above the existing grade on the lower bench, and 5.5 feet higher than ground water. The drain field may be installed at the location indicated on our revised design dated March 12th 2008, although must be installed at a maximum depth of 1 foot. Drain field construction at this depth will maintain a 4.5 -foot separation between bottom of drain field and ground water. The chambers must be covered with 1 -foot of soil and a 3 to 1 slope must be constructed from top of drain field to existing grade. Therefore the mound must extend 3 feet from sides of chambers. The property is located outside of Aspen Colorado, in an area where OWS and wells are necessary. The revision is based on a change in the septic regulations. SITE CONDITIONS A single-family residence presently exists, although will be remodeled to a 4 -bedroom residence having less than 6000SF. There is an existing OWS (tank and drywell) that will be abandoned. The proposed drain field area is on a lower bench on the property. The Roaring Fork River flows to the southwest of the residence. The proposed drain field area slopes 5% to the southwest, and vegetation consists of a moderate cover of grasses. The existing shed will have to be re -located due to drain field construction. Water will be provided by a well as indicated on the plans. SUBSURFACE The subsurface was investigated by observing the soils profile at the cut bank to the northeast of the proposed drain field. The materials observed at the profile cut consisted of 1.5 -foot of a sandy root zone, underlain by sand with cobbles and gravel to the maximum depth observed of 10 feet. Groundwater or bedrock was not observed. During construction, an 8 -foot test pit is required to confirm groundwater conditions. Three percolation holes were dug, in the area of the proposed drain field, as indicated. Percolation rates ranged from 8 to 10 minutes per inch (MPI). A 9 MPI rate will be used to design the OWS. w '%W Subsurface Investigation and Revised OWS Design Project No. 1402 3/12/08 Page 2 DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS The OWS design is based on 4 -bedrooms and an average sewage load of 800 GPD. The installation must include a 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an AX -20 secondary treatment unit, to be followed by a gravelless chamber bed. The bed must have 6 rows of 9 `Quick -4' chambers for a total of 54 chambers. Six inches of concrete sand must be placed beneath chambers. A 3" or 4" perforated PVC lateral must be suspended within chambers the entire length of the chambers. A level manifold must be used to distribute effluent. Construction must be according to the county ISDS regulations, the septic permit provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Depart- ment, and this design. OPERATION INFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE The surface of the drain field should be seeded upon completion. Vegetation is an important factor in drain field performance. Erosion control should be practiced prior to and during re -vegetation. Geo - fabrics or plastics should not be used over the drain field. Livestock should not graze on the drain field. Plumbing fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWS. For Example, a running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a drain field. The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years and clean the effluent filter as needed. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non -biodegradable materials should not be placed into the OWS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWS. The OWS is engineered for domestic waste only. ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES If design includes a pump, air release valves and weep holes should be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of drain field due to the potential to compact soil. Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade. Precast concrete tanks and distribution boxes should be used, unless plastic or fiberglass is required. Access to all tank compartments and distribution devices is required. INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS ALL SERVICE septic, LLC, and the county must view the OWS during construction. The OWS observation should be performed before backfill, after placement of chambers and distribution pipes. Septic tanks, distribution devices, pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed.
