This Department must also be called for the final inspection with a minimum of 48 hours notice. Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the requirements of the Pitkin County OWTS Regulation. This Permit is conditioned upon the property owner(s) providing for regular inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of the system by qualified personnel, in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and the requirements of the Pitkin County OWTS Regulation. Issuance of this OWTS Construction Permit does not constitute a guarantee, warranty, or representation by the Department that the system will operate properly or will not fail. Aspen, CO Re: Certification of Kaplan Residence Replacement Septic System, 0123 Little Texas Lane Woody Creek Pitkin County, Colorado Brian: This letter is a confirmation of our inspections and certification of the installed system at the above - referenced project. There were a couple minor deviations due to costs and logistics, and the lack of capacity of the septic tank lid to handle HS -20 loading. A summary of these deviations follow. Due to cost considerations the decision to completely abandon the existing tank and install a 1,500 - gallon septic tank was confirmed as satisfactory with us prior to the installation taking place. This is in compliance with Sludgehammers specifications and was approved by us. The other change was that the septic tank arrived without a traffic rated lid. The attached design by SK Peightal Engineers Ltd was provided. We did not perform this design so cannot confirm its validity, but based on our inspections the lid was installed according to those design specifications. Based on the above information, the attached certification from Sludgehammer, and our site investigation we hereby certify this system as intended in our original design report submitted to you for the permit. Box 1809 Partin a, CO 81428 970.94857.4 SEPTIC DESIGN Prepared for the Kaplan Residence 0123 Little Texas Lane Woody Creek Pitkin County, Colorado Introduction This project consists of a bedroom addition to an existing 3 -bedroom home and the subsequent analysis of the existing septic system. The existing system was sized for 3 -bedrooms and a percolation rate of 3 min/inch — please refer to the Appendix for design calculations. The expansion will add one bedroom for a total of four bedrooms. An investigation of the existing septic and dry well system has been performed. We are proposing to continue using the existing system after adding a secondary treatment unit and supplementary 500 -gallon septic tank in order to reduce the load factor and thus the required absorption area. This design is based on flow numbers in the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department ISDS Regulations 2013. Field Investigation A mini -excavator was used to access the existing dry well beneath the driveway. Initial observation was that the water level in dry well was below the lowest wall perforations (the residence has been used on an intermittent basis for many years). A hose was inserted into the existing septic tank and used to provide water to the dry well in order to obtain a percolation rate. The day before measurements were taken water was added to the dry well for several hours until the water level rose by a few feet. Upon initial observation the following day, the water level had again dropped to below the lowest wall perforations. Water was again added to the dry well using the hose. It took approximately 30 minutes to raise the water level in the dry well by 4 inches. After 10 minutes the water level was again below the lowest wall perforations. The dry well appears to be in very good condition and performing as originally designed. After examination of the existing condition of the dry well, the positive results of the field investigation, and the new required absorption area based upon the following design calculations, the existing dry well is more than sufficient to handle design flows for this addition. A percolation rate of 5 min/inch was used for this design. A design flow of 900 gpd was used (see calculations below) and a reduced load factor (PLF) of 1.0 as allowed per Section 6.28.090 E of the Pitkin County Regulations for calculation the minimum absorption area for effluent from secondary treatment when the percolation rate formula is used. Kaplan Septic Upgrade DeQn Page 2 of 4 Design Calculations • Design Flow (4 bedrooms) = 75 gal/person/day * 8 persons * 1.5 * = 900 gpd • Required Absorption Area = PLF (Q/5) (t)^0.5 = 1.0 * (900/5) * (5)^0.5 = 403 sf • Required Septic Tank Size = 75 g/p/d x 2 persons x 4 bedrooms x 1.5 x (30 hrs/24 hrs/day) _ 1,125 gal Design Recommendations There is an existing 1000 -gallon septic tank in use on the site. We propose the addition of a new 500 -gallon septic tank after the existing tank, which will provide a total storage capacity of 1,500 gal and is sufficient to provide a 30 -hour retention time for the design flow stated above. In addition, we are proposing secondary treatment by placing a treatment unit in the existing septic tank with some additional components as described below. In order for the secondary treatment unit to function as intended, a minimum 24" diameter hole shall be created in the existing septic tank partition wall, 16" off the bottom of the tank. A Sludgehammer 5-600 will be used as secondary treatment. This type of unit uses Aerobic Bacterial Generator technology. We have been working in collaboration with the manufacturer to create a unique solution specifically for this project site. Though the product literature attached indicates a larger septic tank requirement for the 5-600, the reason behind this requirement is the need for a three-day retention time that is alleviated by the addition of a recirculation pump. The secondary treatment shall be installed as follows: A Sludgehammer 5-600 matrix stack shall be installed within the first compartment of the existing septic tank with the accompanying aerator in the second compartment of the existing tank. The required matrix curtain, an additional identical aerator, and recirculation pump (Sludgehammer model #RCP -1) shall be installed within the new 500 -gallon tank and the 5-600 effluent filter curtain shall be installed at the outlet to the drywell (a second air pump and alarm will be installed for this tank). The air pumps and alarm will be installed either within a basin on the exterior of the garage or without a basin on the interior of the garage (in this case, the alarm will still be installed on the exterior wall). The secondary treatment unit shall be installed by a technician certified by the manufacturer; all electrical work shall be installed by a qualified electrician. A follow-up inspection (to be conducted between the first and third week after start-up), as well as annual maintenance, shall be performed by a certified technician. Operation and maintenance guidelines as recommended by the manufacturer are to be followed. The Sludgehammer 5-600 is NSF -40, Class -1 certified and approved for use in the State of Colorado by the CWQCD. Effluent from the secondary treatment unit will be discharged to an existing drywell that is approximately 12 -feet deep (effective area) and 11 -feet square with a total effective area of 649 sf. A final inspection of the system shall be performed by Pitkin County and the P.E./designer prior to backfilling. •A contract shall be arranged with a certified technician for the annual maintenance of the secondary treatment unit as well as for system troubleshooting on an on-call basis. Septic Tank Requirements Tanks— The S -400/S-600 models of SludgeHammer® require different minimum sized septic tanks for installation. If there are no risers on the septic tank, expose the top of the septic tank so riser (not provided) can be installed. Risers need to be approved by the local authority and installed per manufacturer's instructions. The lid should be secure to prevent unauthorized access and have provisions for safe access. Install the riser over the septic tank opening where the unit will be installed. To be effective, you will need just enough riser to allow for the 1/2" air line assembly, as well as enough height to reach grade. Location of the Unit— The SludgeHammer® unit and all Matrix assemblies are placed in chamber 1. The effluent filter is placed on the outlet of chamber 2. 0 'Location of the Air ?tm One or more basins are used to house the air pump or pumps necessary for the system, depending upon the model number. The basin/ basins should be placed in a convenient location anywhere between the house and the treatment tank. If a basement, garage or shed is available, the air pumps can be installed without the basin. In this event the alarm should be placed at a visible location, preferably on the side of the house nearest the treatment system. The pumps should be located near an electrical source, preferably in the shade. See APPENDIX for wiring. SiudgeHammerO Group Ltd. 1-800-426-3349 5 0 • Dig a 4 to 6" wide by 8 to 12" deep trench from the air pump to septic tank riser (local requirements may vary). (Figure 1) • Drill a 7/8" hole through the riser at or near the bottom of the trench. Install a 1/2" PVC Sch 40 pipe (not provided) through the hole so that it extends into the riser at least 12". This PVC pipe is the air line that will connect the air pump to the SludgeHammer° unit. (Figure 2) The area where the air line enters the riser must be sealed with mastic or by similar means. For the Model -S-400, the air pump is installed as usual. • For the Model S-600, the air line within the riser should have a tee installed with two ball valves downstream of the tee so air can be delivered and air flow regulated between the SludgeHammer° unit and the additional air diffuser. + Do not allow dirt or other contaminants to enter the air line. Instaill the 1,Jnits in the Septic ) - 1` Figure 3 Figure 4 Figure 5 Figure 6 0 NSF -40 Matrix Components— The following describes the sequence for the installation of SludgeHammer's° NSF -400-600 models: MATRIX CURTAIN: These curtain installation instructions will essentially show you step-by-step how to install your curtain, beginning with removal of the curtain from the box, right up to closing up the tank, such that your installation will be flawless. We have installed many of the curtains in an experimental form so that we know that this is the simplest and easiest way possible for you to have a stress -free, successful installation, if you read and follow these instructions carefully. • Install a pipe hanger or some sort of clip (not included) into the side of the riser so that you have something to tie the harness to once the curtain is inside the tank. (This will make it easier for you to remove the curtain from the tank, should that become necessary). (Figure 3) • Remove the curtain from the box. It will be wrapped with a long rope hereinafter referred to as the "lanyard." (Figure 4) Unfold the curtain and lay it down on the ground so that it is flat and tie the lanyard to the "saddle," (Figure 5). This becomes what we will refer to as the "harness." (Figure 6). The harness end represents the TOP of the curtain. • Fold the curtain in half width -wise, making certain that the harness is accessible. (Figure 7) —continued on next page 7 V Install the Units i (continued) NSF -40 Matrix Components (continued)— Then gather (like an accordion) the curtain up from bottom to the top (Figure 8). • While holding onto the harness, insert the curtain into the tank, bottom first and such that the vortex of the curtain is pointed to- wards the inlet to the tank. (Figure 9 & 10). Once the curtain is in the tank, allow the cur- tain to unroll while keeping a slight tension on the lanyard part of the harness. Tug on the lanyard until the curtain falls into place, making certain that the ends have been po- sitioned into the corners of the tank and that the vortex is pointing towards the inlet to the tank. (Figure 11) Tie the harness onto the side of the riser, keeping a slight tension. Close the lid. As with all equipment, the curtain should be checked periodically to ensure that it is still in position and functioning. MATRIX FLOAT: • The Matrix Float is then inserted into the chamber in the open area between the curtain and the inlet and as near to the inlet end as possible. The unit is designed to be free-floating so do not worry about connecting it to anything. (Figure 12) • For Model S-600, the Matrix Float is larger and is associated with the extra air diffuser that is included. For tanks that are shallower than 50", the stack will rest on the SludgeHammer° column but that will not affect performance. (Figure 14) • Remove the threaded rod that passes through the top of the SludgeHammer° column. This is for shipping purposes only and should be discarded. • After attaching the Matrix Stack to the SludgeHammer° column, take the rope that is included with the unit and tie it to the SludgeHammer° column so that it passes upward through the central holes in the Matrix Stack unit. Use this rope to lift and lower the SludgeHammer° column and Matrix Stack into the tank. (Figure 15) • Anchor the rope to the ground with a stake or other means so that it does not fall into the tank while completing the air line assembly. • To complete the air line assembly, cut the two PVC pipes to the appropriate length. Make a glued connection with a 1/2" PVC 90 (not provided). All electrical work is to be done by a qualified electrician. Never enter an empty septic tank. Septic gases are extremely hazardous and can cause death. Detectable and non-detectable poisonous gases will remain in the empty septic tank. Do not breathe septic gases while working around open septic tanks. Exposure to methane and hydrogen sulfide can be harmful. SludgeHammer® Column (continued)— • Remove The SludgeHammer° Blend Bag & Assembly from the packaging. Glue a 1/2" PVC Sch 40 pipe (not provided) into the coupling end of the SludgeHammer° Blend Bag & Assembly creating an extension. The extension should be long enough to extend up into the riser when the Bacterial Catalyst Assembly is set down into the installed unit. (Figure 17 & 18) • Cut the PVC pipe to a length so that it is a few inches below the lid of the riser and glue on a 1/2" PVC tee or elbow (not provided) as a handle. This facilitates the removal and replacement of the SludgeHammer° Blend Bag & Assembly. • Slide the PVC extension with the SludgeHammer° Blend Bag & Assembly down the center PVC pipe of the Unit. Do not force the SludgeHammer° Blend Bag & Assembly into the unit. As long as it is submerged within the air column in the unit then it is positioned correctly. (Figure 18) • Tie off the excess rope from the unit to the horizontal air line pipe. (Figure 19) • Remove central component from Best Effluent filter and glue or attach with a flexible coupler to the outlet pipe of second chamber of the septic tank. After filter body is set, insert the central component back into the filter and close septic tank lid. • Install a high water alarm float in the outlet chamber and extend sensor wires out to Alarm/Control Box. (Be sure all basin connections comply with local codes.) • Check all PVC pipe and fitting joints for evidence of air leaks. Make sure liquid over the unit is being actively agitated and aerated and that the SludgeHammer° Blend Bag & Assembly is submerged. (Figure 20) • Some odors might become noticeable, but typically subside within 24 -hours. If odors are apparent within the house refer to Site Evaluation Form for inspection of proper plumbing and venting. Place the riser lid over the top of the riser opening to reduce exposure to gases. White PVC pipe and fittings are not UV resistant. All exposed pipe and fittings must be covered or painted (not provided). • Install septic tank riser lid. Make certain all lids are tight. • Backfill trenches and bury all 1/2" PVC pipes to restore the landscaping. (Figure 21) • Your install is complete! • Follow-up inspections are recomended between the first and third week after start- up. • After start-up of the unit, a foam or bubbly flock may occur in the tank witin a week or two. Operating a "{ S Proprietary bacteria are introduced at start-up of the system within the bacterial catalyst, which is replaced as part of the annual maintenance. Several billion bacteria spores are contained within the bag. Unlike a conventional anaerobic septic tank, the proprietary bacteria in combination with the air -enriched effluent, break down the solids within the septic tank. The proprietary bacteria is robust and capable of adapting to a wide variety of conditions and moderate abuses, but the bacteria perform best when care is given to what you put into your septic system. The SludgeHammer° Blend Bag & Assembly can be safely handled. As a precautionary measure, SludgeHammer° recommends washing one's hands after handling this part of the product. _F__1 __1_11 —1-1111 The following are recommended guidelines to follow after the installation of the SludgeHammer®. These guidelines are within the normal suggested septic system guidelines for the standard conventional septic system. • Household cleaning products or chemicals should be discharged down the drain into the septic system sparingly. Typically available household cleaning products can normally be used. Cleaning products containing disinfectants, pesticides or products that make claims they kill bacteria should be used sparingly. • Laundry soap and detergents with bactericides should also be avoided. Laundry should be spaced out over the week. If bleach is going to be used, choose a powdered bleach. If possible, do no more than one load a day when using bleach. • Products labeled "natural, organic and biodegradable" still can be toxic; toxic compounds are found everywhere in nature. Read the labels carefully and avoid products that claim to "kill bacteria." • If the home is unoccupied for any extended period, up to two months or if the unit is in a septic tank serving a vacation property that is periodically occupied, leave the air pump operating. Service intervals should be scheduled for the start-up period of each season when possible. • If a vacation home is closed up after the vacation season and the system will be unused for more than two months, unplug the air pump. When the vacation home is occupied the next season, have the service provider install a new bacterial catalyst, and plug in the air pump. The system will restart without additional oversight. • If power is lost for up to six days where the air pump is not functioning, then the septic system should function without problems. Should the power remain out for an extended period of time, then contact your local certified installer or maintenance provider for an additonal service visit to check the system.
