We conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on Monday, June 14, 1993. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The planned residence is a four bedroom, five and one-half bathroom, three level house. The property is served by a subdivision water supply from wells drilled into the shallow alluvium along the creek bed across the road. The lot is approximately 5 acres in size. Site Conditions: The site is a lot adjacent to the Spring Creek Valley drainage. Spring Creek lies to the West about 300 yards beyond the property line and is about 40 feet lower in elevation. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes gently to the Northwest at a 15% grade. There is an irrigation ditch in the immediate area, bisecting the lot and between the building site and the proposed absorption area. This ditch is to be culverted and lined as part of the sight development, and this plan should eliminate any seepage. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit has not yet been dug. The soil texture encountered in the percolation test holes was a P.O. There were ranging in diameter from two to six inches, soil matrix. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard Percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The set of test holes was hand dug to a depth of three feet. Several inches of gravel was placed on the bottom of each hole. The subsoil, in which the percolation testing was done, consisted of a clay loam with some cobble and rock fragments. These dark brown to tan soils were well consolidated, and showed some tendency to swell. Some smearing and compaction was observed in percolation test holes prior to roughing the sidewalls and bottom. one of the test holes filled with water from apparent seepage from the ditch. It was not measured. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area west and slightly north of the staked building foundation area. Three shallow holes were hand dug to a total depth of between thirty-four and thirty-six inches. As mentioned, the test hole closest to the ditch was saturated and could not be measured. Water was added to the two other test holes by this company every two hours for approximately eight hours before beginning the percolation test measurements. We made an effort to keep the gravel on the bottom of each test hole submerged. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the clayey loam soils have an average percolation rate of 55 minutes per inch and are marginally acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluation of our recommendations. Site Conditions: As mentioned in previous correspondence, there is an irrigation ditch in the immediate area, bisecting the lot and between the building site and the proposed septic system absorption area. This ditch is to be culverted and lined as part of the sight development. However, until that is done, the soil evaluation and additional percolation testing cannot be completed. We believe this plan should eliminate any seepage from the ditch and make sufficient area available for a sewage absorption system. Once the ditch is lined, the mimimum setbacks from the absroption area can be met. There is indicaion that the final percolation rates are going to be acceptable, as the rates measured in the initial percolation testing were considered acceptable. The lining of the ditch should eliminate any interference with water absorption in the area. The ditch, however, now presents a limiting factor, and if not lined, would eliminate the site below the ditch from consideration as an absorption area. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based our site visits to the property. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site still may not be evident at the time of this investigation. Additional evaluation is needed when the excavation work is completed and the ditch lined. Proposed Construction: The planned residence under construction is a relatively large one to two-story house of four bedrooms and five and one-half bathrooms. The property is served by the treated water supply furnished by the subdivision. The lot is approximately 5 acres. Low water -use toilet fixtures are to be provided in all bathrooms. Site Conditions: The site is in the East Owl Creek Subdivision adjacent to the Spring Creek Valley drainage. Spring Creek is to the West about 300 yards from the proposed septic system location and about 40 lower in elevation. The ground surface which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field slopes to the Northwest at a 15% grade. There is an irrigation ditch traversing the lot between the house and the planned absorption area location. This ditch has been lined with culvert across approximately 50% of the building envelope since our initial investigations last year. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile hole was excavated on June 27, 1994 about 10 feet from the proposed absorption area and fifty feet below the irrigation ditch. It was dug to a depth of eight feet. The excavation encountered some ground water or seepage from the ditch at 7 3/4 feet. Bedrock was not P.O. The soil texture generally was a sandy clay, with some increase in the clay content with depth. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were hand dug and several inches of gravel placed on the bottom of each hole. The subsoil in which the percolation tests were run, consisted of approximately 15 to 20 inches of loam topsoil grading to a sandy clay loam to three feet and extending to the depth of percolation test holes, thirty four to thirty-six inches. This grayish soil was well consolidated, and showed little tendency to swell, although some smearing and compaction from the excavation equipment was observed in the profile hole below four feet. The depth of the loam topsoil increased in the holes prepared toward the south property line. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the approximate location of the proposed absorption field area Northwest of the building. The three shallow holes were hand dug to a depth of thirty-four to thirty-six inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked the morning of testing. Water was added approximately every two hours before beginning the percolation test. There was water remaining in only one of the percolation test holes (113) when we arrived at the site about 7:30 p.m. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. We have also included the preliminary results for the tests conducted last year. These results from the latest set of test holes, indicate the sandy clay soils have an average percolation rate of 13 minutes per inch and would be acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system. However, in light of the results, it seems more conservative for design purposes to discard the results of two of the test holes, the fastest and slowest, and average test holes # 1, #113, and #2B to calculate the rate for absorption area required. This average percolation rate of 22 minutes per inch and would still be acceptable for a conventional infiltration field design and account for the variability in the results of the percolation tests over the proposed septic system leach field. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation. If further excavation reveals conditions different from those described, additional evaluations may be necessary.
