The system was designed under our Job No. 12781W, dated September 5, 2001. AiA The system includes the installation of one 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank . with dual effluent pumps in a Biotube7m pump vault and two gravelless chamber -beds. Each bed has 3 rows of 12 chambers, with imported sand filter material, for a total infiltrative area of 1032 square feet. A gradation analysis of the filter material is included as Figure 2. The pump, alarm, and Biotub6m vault were in place at the time of our visit. The construction foreman, Scott with Condon Construction, may activate pumping system at his discretion. The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. If there are questions or if we may be of further service, please call. ENGINEERS & GEOLOGISTS September 5, 2001 Matt Flink Construction, Inc. Attn: Matt Flink 191 Navajo Street Carbondale, Colorado 81623 Subject: Subsurface Investigation and Revised OWS Design, Proposed Berry-Drzynski Residence Tract 2, Aspen Ridge Subdivision, Brush Creek Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 12781W Gentlemen: As requested, we have evaluated subsurface conditions at the site and designed a revised onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the proposed residence. The revision is based on a change in the number of bedrooms from our original report, dated August 3, 2000. All previous designs should be discarded to avoid confusion. Our firm investigated subsurface conditions on June 13, 2000. SITE CONDITIONS The property is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has 12-15% slopes to the northeast, and has a moderate cover of native grass and scrub oak. The residence will be served water by an onsite well, located 188+ feet from the proposed OWS. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The proposed residence will have a total of four bedrooms and a living area of less than 6000 SF. The OWS was sized based on 4 bedrooms and 800 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peak factor of 1.75 is 1400 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and a garbage grinder. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was performed by digging one profile pit 6 feet deep and 4 percolation holes, 26 to 33 inches deep, at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface materials encountered in the profile pit consisted of 6 inches of root zone, underlain by sandy clay to 2 feet, underlain by fractured Mancos Shale to the maximum depth explored of 6 feet, where refusal was encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 20 to 80 minutes per inch (MPI). The average rate is 45 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table. 1. The basal area of the mound should be sized on a percolation rate of 45 MPI. DENVER 4501 Wadsworth Boulevard Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 CASTLE ROCK 303.660.4358 303.463.9317 Fax: 303.463.9321 EVERGREEN 303.816.1455 LOVELAND 970.663.2124 Subsurface 1 aigation and Revised OWS Design Job No. 12781 W Page 2 RECOMMENDATIONS The proposed OWS includes installation of a septic tank with a dual effluent pumping system, and two mound chamber -type drain fields with imported sand filter material at the locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 800 GPD, an application rate of 0.95 gals/SF/day to the top of the mound, and a percolation rate of 45 MPI at the base of the mound. The installation must include one 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with dual effluent pumps in a Biotub6m pump vault. Two pressure distributed, mounded drain field beds using chambers with 2.5 feet of imported sand filter material should be installed, as indicated on Figures 1 and 2. Six inches of topsoil should be removed and replaced on top of the mound to promote plant growth. The beds must have 3 rows of 12 chambers with 125 -inch PVC laterals suspended from the chambers, as indicated on Figure 2. The laterals should have 1/8 holes drilled on 3 -foot centers facing upward, with every fifth hole facing downward. The pump should be capable of a total flow rate of 34.2 gallons per minute, and a total dynamic head of 22.2 feet. Vehicle movement over the drain field bed area during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix available at seed stores should be used. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, we recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.
