Job No. 4 34 91 Dear Mr. Ot : As requested, Chen -Northern, Inc., observed the excavation at the subject site on July 5, 1991 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Mike Otte, dated July 5, 1991. The proposed residence will be two stories of wood frame construction with about 1600 square feet on the lower level and 2500 square feet on the upper level. A detached garage is proposed. At the time of our visit to the site, the excavation for the residence had been cut in multiple levels from 2 to 5 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The excavation stepped down to the north, similar to the direction of the ground surface slope. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of clayey sandy gravel with cobbles. The coarse material consists of angular rock fragments. Some of the upper level cut was based in topsoil. The results of a gradation analysis performed on a sample of the clayey gravel (minus 5 -inch fraction) obtained from the site are presented on Fig. 1. The soils were generally very firm and slightly moist to moist. A small area of the deeper, lower level cut had some ponded seepage and wet soil. Based on experience, the clay soils in this area can exhibit an expansion potential. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, we recommend the proposed residence be founded with spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2000 psf. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Loose or disturbed soils and topsoil encountered at the foundation bearing level within the excavation should be removed and the footings extended down to adequate natural bearing material. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of 60 pcf. A perimeter foundation drain should be A member of theHIH group of companies Mike Otte July 17, 1991 Page 2 provided to prevent tenporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of each level of excavation. The underslab gravel of the lower level should be connected to the perimeter drain. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building. The recommendations suhmitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation. Since we did not conduct subsurface exploration, we have assumed the conditions observed in the excavation represent those within the depth of influence of the foundation. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter. Geologic conditions which could in -pact the site are beyond the scope of this study. If there are any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know.
