Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications dated August 23 and August
23 Revised, 1999. Any changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer prior to them being

The engineer design is for two 1,000 gallon tanks in series followed by a 750 gallon pumping tank. When tanks are
used in series the county requires that the tanks are not baffled. The design takes a 30 % reduction for use of
chamberless units. There will be 6 trenches with a total of 98 units. Six feet of undisturbed soil must be
maintained between trenches.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin
County ISDS regulations. The County does not endorse any brand of products.

Plans and specifications of the pr osed individual sewage disposal system have been reviewed and are considered
satisfactory. Permission is hereby granted to the owner or the agent to perform the work indicated in accordance with the Pitkin
County ISDS Regulation in effect at the time of issue. This permit becomes invalid 6 months from the date that the permit was
issued unless system construction has commenced or an extension has been approved in writing by the Department.
As -built drawings must be included with this permit before the final approval will be issued.

The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is 61000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit: second, before
final approval of the ISDS permit.
Application for an individual sewage disposal system is hereby submitted. I hereby certify that the above information is true and
accurate and that I have provided true and accurate information on locations of all existing and proposed wells, contour
intervals, buildings, property lines, ditches, slopes, waterlines, springs, suction or irrigation lines, drinking water cisterns, drain
tiles, irrigation ditches, lakes, water courses, streams, floodplains, dry gulches, and existing septic systems. I hereby certify
that any such features not shown on attached site map are not present. Issuance of the permit does not imply the approval of
any other permit required for construction pursuant to Pitkin County codes. No construction may be undertaken until all
approvals and permits have been obtained.
The Aspen/Pitkin Environmental He t Department, Pitkin County and employees of these agencies will be held harmless
should the individual sewage dispo al ystem fail or malfunction. The permit to construct is issued on information submitted by
the applicant or his/her representativgfs. The owner assumes full responsibility in case of failure of the system.

The system was designed and installed and placed into service in October of
2001 to replace to old system. MWE and GDD inspected the installation of the
system and found it was installed according to MWE's design and PCEH
requirements. This letter is to serve as the acceptance letter for MWE and
recommendation to Pitkin County for final acceptance of the system.
To my knowledge the system was installed according to MWE drawings, with
changes to the layout. The attached asbuilt drawing reflects the asbuilt
installation of the system. The system consists of 1 - new 2,000 gallon tank
and 1 - 1,000 gallon pumping/dosing tank, 2 trenches with 17 units and 4
trenches with 16 units for a total of 98 units were installed in a infiltrator
gravelless chamber system. All setback limitations were met.

following changes are authorised.

facilities), down the hill slightly and twsrd the blorth to allow the system
to better fit the site. each raw of trenches is to continue to follow the

contractor is to most all site setbacks, design requiremants, and other County
regulations.
2. As discussed, the number of trenches, length, and six* of infiltrators will
remain the some as per the design.
3. Install 1 - 2,000 gallon septic tank instead of 2 - 1,000 gallon tanks is
acceptable, and installation of 1 - 1,000 gallon dosing tank instead of a 750
gallon tank is also acceptable.
Contractor is to provide asbuilt drawings of the system to the engineer upon
completion of the system. Drawings to be complete with ties to each tank and
such and of each trench, and other appurtenances. please use permanent
features for asbuilt ties.

The following are my design notes fog the new Shapiro Residence Septic System
design. The site is a sloped area next to the home.
- 4 - Bedrooms
- Approx. 3,950 Square Feet of living area
- 100 gallons per day per person
- Per Rates - 60 MPI By GDD
- Ground water 1,000'+\- feet from surface
- Public water supply system.
Flow = Q = 4 bed rooms x 2 peo/br x 100 gal/day/per x 1.75 = 1,400 gallons
per day.
Tank sizing - 4 - Bed Rooms requires 1,750 gallons of septic tanks; Q X 1.25
Install two 1,000 gallon tanks in series for total 2,000 gallons of septic
tanks. The new system will require a dosing tank to pump the effluent into
the proposed system due to the slow percolation rates. An additional 750
gallon pumping tank is required in series with the two septic tanks.
Dosing/pumping is to utilize a separate 750 gallon single chambered dosing
tank. Dosing volume -- 300 gallons per dose 2-3 times per day.

30% reduction for infiltrators = 1,518 sq ft or 98 infiltrators
Install 2 rows of 17 units and 4 rows of 16 units in a terraced system that
steps down - 3' every two rows. Contour the trenches to fit site conditions
and the topo of the site. Trenches are to be 10' apart min.
Tanks will be installed in the general area below the home. Tees will be
installed on :both the inffluent and effluent lines of the tank, set on the
inside of the tank. Set top of line from tee within 1" of the roof of the
tank and extend line downward 12" below center line of tee. Fill tank with
water prior to backfill to check for leaks and leave water in tank for placing
the system in service. Septic tanks will be a two -chambered tanks.
Piping from the home to the tanks will be 4" SDR 35 PVC laid at a minimum of
1%. Insulate lines with less than 5 -font of cover or in uninsulated crawl
spaces.
Distribution will be through a 2-1/2" Sch 40 PVC from the tank to each trench,
where 1-1/2" sch 40 perforated PVC will be run into each of the 6 rows.
Perforations at 6' on center, perforated in the bottom of the pipe. All
piping to be bedded in a minimum of 2" under and 6" over of 3/4" screened
rock.
Adjustments to fit site contours and conditions may be made per approval of
the engineer. Elevations of the tank and trenches shall be finalized in the
field by the engineer. Installation and operation shall be approved by the
engineers prior to final acceptance. System must meet all PCEH and MWE
standards.
Dosing pump is a Hydromatic SP 40, ( 104 gpm Q-10'head).

RE: Shapiro Residence SEPTIC SYSTEM DESIGN - 3 bedroom home + 1 caretaker UNIT REVISED
This memorandum is written to give you additional details on the design, materials, and installation of the
Septic System which was designed to serve the proposed new home of the 3 bedroom home and future
1 bedroom garage on the property. The memorandum is separated into three sections; 1 - Septic tank
and System design, 2 - Effluent tank design, 3 - Installation and Materials for the system. The design
drawing is also attached for additional reference.
See design notes and drawing for more information.
1. Septic Tank and System Design:
The location of the homes and the site conditions determined the type of system to be designed. The
site is located at 2438 Juniper Hill Road in the Brush Creek Subdivision. The difficulties encountered
deal with the limited area to work with and included the poor soils, existing water courses, and finding a
flat location for the system. These items lead to the design of a system which would use a standard
septic tank, infiltrator System, and will require a pump to disperse the effluent into the system.
The system design was based on the ultimate construction of. 3 bedroom residences plus a 1 bedroom
garage unit which required at a minimum, the installation of 1,750 gallons of septic tanks for the
separation of solids and a dosing tank. I recommend adding 2 new 1,000 gallon tanks in series for a
total of 2,000 gallons. This design proposes to use a third 750 gallon tank as the effluent pump/dosing
tank. All of the main septic tanks are to be a double chambered and the dosing tanks is a single
chambered tank. The three tanks are to be installed in a series with the two new tanks first followed by
to dosing tank. The tank invert piping elevations are to be verified in the field and as shown on the
attached design drawing. The dosing volume is to be 300 gallons per dose approximately 2- 3 times per
day.
The water level, the dosing system, and the flow anticipated to utilized by the system determine the size
of !Pe Infiltrator System required. Using 100 gallons per person per day and a peak factor of 1.75, a flow
of 1,400 gallons per day requires 1,815 square feet of septic disposal in the System with aao rPci�,rtion
for use of infiltrators. 98 Infiltrator units in six trenches are needed. I am recommending using 4 trenches
of 16 units and 2 with 17 units in each for a total of 98 unify. -this also allows the use of even trench
lengths. Fill is to be native soils similar to those encountered in the profile hole. Invert of the trenches is
to be — 3 -foot below existing grade. The trenches will be terraced down the hill to allow installation of the
system and follow the contours.
The details of the Infiltrator System, installation, elevations, and location are shown on the attached
design drawing. The overall system size will be 50-feet X102-feet in six trenches. The transmission line
from the pump to the field is to be 2-1/2" Sch 40 PVC to allow distribution of the effluent into each of the
six trenches. A 1-1/2" Sch 40 PVC perforated line shall be hung in at the top of each row of infiltrator
trenches Ld allow even distribution. Perforations in tfie piping shall be 1/4" dia. at 72" on center in the
bottom of the pipe.
Effluent Pumping Tank:

p y a in approximately 750 gallons. The tank is sized order to cycle
the pump operation of the system. The pumping system is required to pump the effluent up
approximately -15-feet of elevation difference and 25-feet of piping and head losses, for a total of 10-feet
of head at 104 gprn. The pump we have chosen for the system is a submersible, by Hydromatic Pump,
Model number SP-40 a bronze pump system, with a piggyback float system. The pump is a .4 horse
power, single phase, 115volt with a 2-inch discharge and a built in diaphragm level control system or
optional float system to regulate the operation of the pump based on water levels in the tank. The pump
operation and installation is simple, as the water level in the tank rises it switches on the pump, which
operates until it reaches the bottom of the pump and shuts the pump off. We recommend the
operational float level system for the tank. A double float system will need to be used, also by
Hydromatic, Model 3900. The pump is to set on the floor of the tank approximately 6-inch above the
floor. (Design details for operational water levels in the tank are to be field determined by the design
engineer. The type of pump control depends on the dimensions of the tank). Dosing volume is 300+/-
gallons per dose.
At your option a second pump could be purchased as a backup or stand by pump. This would shorten
the system down time and inconveniences which will occur if the pump breaks down or has other
problems. The cost of the second pump is approximately $800.00. It is not required, but is
recommended.
The effluent tank is also required by the County to be equipped with a high water level alarm system to
alert you when a pump has failed to operate or another problem has risen. The high water level alarm
system is operated by a float, mounted on the tank wall, which is activated when the water level rises to
a chosen point above the normal operating pump level. The float signals a red light and a buzzer, which
should be located in your adjacent mechanical room or garage. The buzzer can be turned off manually
signaling acknowledgment of the problem, but the red light stays on until after the water level drops back
down. This is a required safety feature which assists the owner in the satisfactory operation of system by
letting you know you have a problem before it becomes an emergency situation. The system we have
chosen is a Tank Alert 1. by S.J. Electro. (See design drawing for additional level control details. Please
check to see if the existing alarm can be reused.
2 - 2-inch PVC conduits are required to be run from the adjacent home to the new effluent pumping tank.
One is for power to the pump and the other one for the high water level control system. Please inform
the electrical designer of the barn of these additions.
Installation and Materials:
The septic tanks can be obtained from Copeland concrete products in Rifle, or from the locally in Emma
from Dreager. The tanks should be located as shown on the drawings and installed level. The access
ports are to be sealed water tight and brought up to within 6 -inches of final grade. If in the event the
tanks are too high, minor landscaping may be required to bury them. The invert elevations for both tanks
are critical to the operation of the pump and should be followed closely. The blockouts for the inlets and
outlets are also required to sealed water tight to prevent infiltration.
All piping, pump, and alarm system materials can be obtained form Dodson Engineering products in
Glenwood or Grand Junction Pipe in Basalt. The 4 -inch piping from the house to the septic tank and to
the pumping tank is SDR 35. All Piping should be installed at a minimum depth of 3.5 -feet with clean
outs at all 90 -degree bends and in line wyes at connects to main line. The 2-1/2 and 1-1/2" sch 40
pumping line is to be laid with the shown slope to permit the line to drain back into the tank after each
pumping cycle to prevent freezing. The trenches and lateral lines are to be installed as shown on the
drawing and are need to be installed to within + or - .01 -feet. (See attached design drawing for bedding
details and additional installation notes.)
The septic system installation can be done by any excavation contractor who is familiar with this type of
