Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Tests for a Replacement Individual Sewage System for
a 3.058 -acre Parcel of Land in Section 21, Township 9 South, Range 85 West of the 6th P.M.,
numbered as 8883 Upper River Road, Pitkin County Colorado
Dear Lindy and Tom,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., has performed a soils study
and percolation testing to design a septic system for the residence at the subject site. We
conducted this study according to Article 5 of the Pitkin County Regulations on Individual
Sewage Disposal Systems on Thursday November 13, 1997. We have based our
recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered at that time. Please furnish this letter
and a copy of the enclosed data sheet to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department to
obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system.
Existing and Proposed Construction and Building Site:
The existing residence is a two-story frame house, partially unfinished. It is potentially a duplex
structure.
The second story has been under construction for some time, and is still considered uninhabitable.
The unfinished top level is approximately 1330 square feet. The lower level is finished and
occupied, and is calculated to be approximately 1320 square feet.
As we understand, future plans include a design to possibly add on and finish the top part of the
house into a two bedroom, two and one half bathroom residential unit. Included in this plan is an
expansion of the structure to slightly less than 5000 square feet of living area. It is also possible
that the existing structure will be torn down and replaced with a duplex located further north on
the property.
The domestic water supply for the residence is from the Roaring Fork River with the water supply
line located in the northwest corner of the property. The water service line is already in place.
There is an extensive water storage and treatment system, including filtration, to ensure that the
water supply meets drinking water standards. We note that here is an abandoned well on the south
property line in a shed. This well is not used and will be property capped, sealed and abandoned.
The lot is approximately 3.06 acres in size and located along the east side of the Roaring Fork
River in Woody Creek. Most of the property slopes to the West at grades up to 40 %. However,
the ground surface in the area of the proposed absorption field is located in a benched area of the

lot and slopes to the Southwest at a slope of less than 10%. There is a steep, twenty foot road
cut for Upper River Road to the west of the building site.
The developed portion of the property is covered with evergreen trees and landscaped with lawn
and flower beds. The rest of the property is vegetated with grasses and oak brush.
Existing Onsite Sewage Syste
No records are available on the existing septic system at the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health
Department. However, the existing system on the property is believed to consist of a 1000 -gallon
metal septic tank just south of the house. The size, location, and construction methods for the
final septic tank effluent discharge are unknown, but believed to be a seepage pit or deep seepage
bed. Because of the age of the existing system and the addition planned for the house,
replacement of the septic system is expected to eventually be required by the Aspen/Pitkin
Environmental Health Department,
Subsurface Conditions:
A soil profile pit, excavated in the area considered suitable for an on-site wastewater system
absorption field, was dug to a depth of approximately eight feet. The excavation revealed that no
groundwater was encountered to that depth. Further, there was no bedrock evident in the profile
pit.
The soils within the profile excavation consisted of ten inches of dark brown silty loam topsoil
grading to a lighter reddish brown silty clay loam to a depth of forty inches and overlaying a
lighter tan sandy loam and cobble layer at the bottom of the profile pit.
Percolation Testing:
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the
approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were excavated to a depth anticipating
the installation of a level seepage bed with a five foot cut and were dug to approximately the same
elevation. At this depth, all of the percolation test holes were dug into the light tan sandy loam
subsoil.
The test holes were prepared by hand -digging a small hole in the bottom of each of the four -foot
deep backhoe excavations. Four inches of gravel were placed in each test hole after all loose soil

had been removed and the test hole sidewalls roughened. During the final test hole preparation,
we avoided smearing the soil surfaces.
The percolation holes were pre-soaked by adding water to a depth of twelve inches above the
gravel layer the morning of the day the test measurements were done. At regular one-hour
intervals throughout the day, the small, hand -dug test holes were refilled. When the test began,
the holes were almost empty, and were refilled to a depth of ten inches above the bottom of each
test hole.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy
loam and cobbly soils had an average percolation rate of 25 minutes per inch. Soils with a
percolation rate in this range are considered suitable for a conventional infiltration design for the
on-site sewage system.
Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area
for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in
this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is
some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may
not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if
further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be
advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate our
recommendations.
