If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time of application. My concerns are: 1) You are including in the perc test average the rates for hole #1 and #2 which are not within the area of the absorption field. You should just use the average of #3, 4& 5. If you want more soil info to average you could do more perc test in the correct area, more towards the end of the upper proposed trench area. 2) What engineering practices are you using in the trenches in a 40- 45% slope? 3) The design is based on 3 bedrooms. The system was designed under our Job No. 14453, dated October 24, 2001. The system includes the installation of one 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with a pump in a BiotubeTm pump vault and four gravelless chamber -trenches. Each trench has 1 row of 16 chambers for a total infiltrative area of 992 square feet. The trenches were installed to parallel the contour of the ground. A concrete distribution box with a baffle was used to distribute effluent to the trenches. The pump, alarm, and Biotub6rm vault were in place at the time of our site visit. The construction foreman may activate pumping system at his discretion. The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. Previous percolation testing performed on the lot were presented in reports dated July 3, 1997 and September 30, 1999. The pits were dug on May 24, 2000. The profile pit was near the middle of the designated disposal area and below about 2 feet of topsoil encountered very stiff to hard clay to the pit depth of 8 feet. Percolation holes P-1 and P-3 were located about 25 feet west and about 40 feet east of the profile pit and percolation hole P-2 was located next to the profile pit. The test holes (nominal 7 inches in diameter and 10 inches deep) were hand dug and soaked with water the day before testing. The percolation test results are presented in Table I and indicate average percolation rates between 220 and 1440 minutes per inch If you hive any questions or require further assistance, please call our office. The drilled piers and engineered septic system will be relatively expensive compared to conventionai footings and infiltr.3ticn septic system designs. The purpose of our investigation was to confirm our original percolation data obtained October 18, 2001. This letter and attached Figure must accompany original design. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 40% - 45% slope to the north and a heavy cover of native grasses and scrub oak. The residence will be served by the local water district. PERCOLATION TEST Additional percolation tests were conducted by digging two percolation holes, P-6 and P-7, at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Percolation tests indicate rates of 27 and 40 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate, incorporating only the rates obtained in the drain field area, is 47 MPI. RECOMN[ENDATIONS Four gravelless trenches, each with one row 16 chambers must be installed at the subject property. A concrete distribution box properly bedded and leveled is required to distribute effluent throughout the trenches. We have increased the length of each chamber -trench by one chamber from our last revised design, dated October 24, 2001. This increase is to accommodate the slower percolation rate. All other recommendations must be followed. A gravelless chamber -trench design is the best OWS design for this site. There is a six-foot separation between trenches, dosing the drain field is proposed, and excavation is kept to minimum to maintain a suitable amount of native soil. Using these design requirements we feel a trench OWS is the most suitable for the site, and the existing slope will not effect the performance of the field. The revision is based on a change in number of bedrooms from our original report dated October 22, 2001. All previous designs should be discarded to avoid confusion. The subsurface investigation was performed on Oct. 18, 2001. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 40% - 45% slope to the north and a heavy cover of native grasses and scrub oak. The residence will be served by the local water district. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A four-bedroom residence, with a living area of 4343 square feet (SF), is proposed as presented on Figure 1. The OWS was sized based on 4 bedrooms and 800 gallons per day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environ- mental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1400 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was performed by digging five percolation holes, 23 to 44 inches deep, at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Soil profile information was obtained by observing a 12 -foot cut excavated for installation of a retaining wall at the location presented on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions consisted of sandy clay topsoil to 2 feet, underlain by silty, sandy clay with cobbles to the maximum depth explored of 12 feet. No ground water or bedrock was encountered. A profile pit is required to confirm subsurface conditions prior to installation of the OWS. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 9 to 80 minutes per inch (MPI). The average rate is 41 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table 1. Each trench must have I1 row of 15 chambers for a total of 60 chambers. A flow splitter basin is required to distribute effluent to the trenches. Pumps with a total flow rate of 20 Gallons Per Mmute (GPM) and a Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of 53.3 feet are required to pump effluent to the flow splitter basin. Pump specifications are included as Figure 4. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the trenches should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbio- degradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LEVIITATIONS An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations_ The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.
