Residence on Lot 3, Block 6, Filing I, Brush Creek Village Subdivision numbered as 72 Selma

Dear John,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and
percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study in
accordance with Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations on Individual Sewage Disposal
stems. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. We
will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department in order to obtain a
permit to construct this individual sewage system.
Proposed Construction:
The residence is to be a four bedroom, three bathroom multi-level house. There are two
additional powder rooms provided in the main living area and off the media room.
Site Conditions:
The property is approximately 2.1 acres in size. The drinking water is to be provided from the
subdivision water system through Snowmass Water and Sanitation District.
The building site is on a lot located in the Brush Creek Village Subdivision. About 50% of the lot
is covered with oak brush, sagebrush and grasses. The Northeastern part of the lot is sparsely
vegetated with areas of decomposed shale on the surface.
The ground surface, which appears natural throughout the proposed area of building and within
the site of the septic system field, slopes to the Southeast at grades from 25% to 50%
Subsurface Copditions:
A soil profile pit, within 80 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated to a depth of
approximately eight feet. No groundwater was encountered. Fractured bedrock was encountered
at a depth of five to six feet from the surface of the ground. There was some fractured shale
intermixed with the soil matrix from four feet. This bedrock became harder and more

consolidated with depth, but could still be excavated with equipment. The soils can be
characterized as approximately 8 inches of silty topsoil, 42 inches of sandy clay, and 46 inches of
blocky, hard, fractured shale. The vegetation pattern suggests that the soils are deeper and more
prevalent along the Southwest property line, although another profile hole is necessary to
establish the depth to shale bedrock within the area proposed for the septic system.
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedure at the
approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were excavated by hand . Other
percolation test holes to the Northeast of the proposed absorption field location encountered
fractured shale and were not able to be properly presoaked. The subsoil in which the percolation
testing was run, consisted of sandy clay. These clays were well consolidated, and showed only a
slight tendency to swell. The rates measured averaged 42 minutes per inch. This soil is
considered acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system.
However, if shallow bedrock is encountered in the proposed absorption area the soil is considered
unsuitable. Should this prove to be the case, we refer you to Schmeuser, Gordon, Meyer
Engineering to develop a site-specific design to address these soil conditions.
Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in
this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations
submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated.
There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the
site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional
evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office
should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our
recommendations.
