Although the bed differs slightly in dimensions from the design prepared by this office, it ap- pears to be in conformance with the 1998 square feet needed for the area. The change in dimensions was justified by Mr. Lauer's wishes to construct one large bed rather than the two smaller beds as was indicated on the plans. MULLER The following report and design has been prepared for an in- dividual sewage disposal system for the referenced lot loca- ted in Pitkin County, Colorado. The design is intended to meet the requirements of the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department and the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Requirements effective March 25, 1974. CRITERIA A 3 bedroom single-family residence is to be constructed on the site. The residence will have an automatic clothes washer but will not have a garbage disposal. The area available for the sewage disposal system has a pre- vailing northeastern exposure and a general slope of 10 per- cent in the lower areas and 20 percent in the steeper portions. The site for the sewage disposal system is a natural bench in the hillside located just above Brush Creek Drive. Cover on the site consists primarily of scrub oak, sage brush, and native grass. SOILS CONDI^1IONS Test pits dug in the sewage disposal site location reveal that the soils consist of a thin mantle of topsoil approxi- mately 6 inches in thickness overlying a 2 foot layer of very impervious clay. Beneath the clay lies a zone of fractured shale which exhibits extremely high infiltration rates. The Pitkin County Health Department has conducted infiltration tests which reveal that an infiltration hole extending into the clay lens exhibits virtually no infil- tration while a hole protruding into the fractured shale area has extremely high rates exceeding 5 minutes per inch. CIVIL ENGINEERING / LAND SURVEYING /STORM DRAINAGE/ STRUCTURAL/ TRANSPORTATION / WATER & SANITATION/ COMPUTER SERVICES Mr. Alaln Lauer Page 2 November 2, 1977 PROPOSED SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM The proposed sewage disposal system for this site consists of a combined evapotranspiration and infiltration bed in accord- ance with Paragraph 6.05 of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage -Disposal Regulations. In order to limit infiltration rates to reasonable levels, the infiltration bed will be over excavated 2 feet below the normal bottom elevation and back- filled with the clay and topsoil material excavated from the surface of the bed. The material will be moistened and firmly compacted into place to form a semipermeable liner for the bottom of the bed. Based on the results of numerous soil tests in the area which our firm has been involved in on past projects, we estimate that a reasonable infiltration rate through the compacted liner will be 180 minutes per inch. To preclude laterial migration of effluent into the fractured shale exposed at the periphery of the bed, polyethlene cur- tains are specified around the exterior of the bed extending down to a point below the clay lining. A cutoff wall is also planned on the downhill side of each bed to prevent breakout on lower slopes. Due to the northeastern exposure of the site and the rela- tively large snow depth accumulations, an evaptranspiration rate of 0.10 gallons per square foot per day has been used in calculating the evapotranspiration capabilities of the bed. Due to limited available suitable areas and the fact that the bed relies upon a semipermeable lining base combined with evapotranspiration, it is our recommendation that an aerated treatment unit be utilized for primary and secondary treatment rather than a typical septic tank. Although either an aerated unit or septic tank will give satisfactory service for the short term period, the aerated unit will give the bed a longer life expectancy. It is our estimation that the useful bed life will be 20 to 25 years with an aerated unit as opposed to 7 to 15 years with a septic tank type treatment unit. CONCLUSIONS The attached calcuation sheets give the details of determining the bed sizing requirements. The recommended bed square foot- age is 2,000 square feet. The recommended bed location and dimensions are shown on the accompanying drawing titled "Sew- age Disposal System", and normal construction items are il- lustrated on the drawing "Standard Details, Aerobic Evapo- transpiration Field Design". It is recommended that primary and secondary treatment of the sewage be accomplished by an � c o Mr. Alan Lauer Page 3 November 2, 1977 aerated type sewage treatment unit having a minimum volume of 1,000 gallons. A septic tank would provide satisfactory treatment although it would shorten the life expectancy of the evapotranspiration bed. In addition to those items specifically shown on the plans, it will be necessary to meet all requirements of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Regulations. In particular, the sewage treatment unit must be located 10 feet from any potable water supply line and 10 feet from any dwelling or any other occupied building. The disposal field must be lo- cated 10 feet from any potable water supply line and 15 feet from any dwelling or occupied building, and 10 feet from any property line. The Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Regulations re- quire that the designing engineer inspect the completed in- stallation and certify that it has been constructed in accord- ance with the design as approved by the County Health Depart- ment. Please contact us when the bed is excavated and ready to begin installing the clay liner, when the liner is complete, and near the completion of the construction so that we may inspect the facility as required by the regulations. The 3 inspections are necessary due to the unusual nature of the system. Gingery Associates, Inc., has utilized the following accepted criteria and engineering judgement in design of this system, but makes no warranty with regard to the expected useful life of this system. It is recommended that periodic inspection and maintenance be provided for best operation. The design of this system was based on: A. Manual of Septic Tanks Practices, U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, 1967 Edition, Reprinted 1972. B. Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Regula- tions.
