Attached herewith is the design criteria for a wastewater treatment system
for your proposed residence in Brush Creek Village. The design concept
utilizes a septic tank and drainfield. The drainfield is a mound type soil
absorption system that is elevated above the natural ground in a suitable
fill material. This system is used because of the shallow permiable soil
zone above creviced or porous bedrock.
The following ar the design parameters
t2 'OF&
Single famihy €mT- bedroom home
Infiltration rate of natural soils 0.5
Porous or creviced bedrock less than 4
Water table greater than 4 ft. deep
Design flow rate = 150 gpd per bedroom
Ground slope less than 12%
Septic Tank
used in the system design:
apd/ft2
ft, deep
The septic tank shall be a concrete tank with a 1,000 gallon liquid capacity
to provide a minimum of 30 hours of detention. Pre -cast tanks such as those
manufactured by Copeland Concrete, Inc. in Rifle, Colorado, are acceptable.

Soil Absorption Mound
NoI
The soil absorption system shall be a mound type as shown on the attached
Figure 7-10 and figure 7-11. The mound shall be located on natural ground,
approximately parallel to the contour of the land on a slope no greater than
12%, as shown on figure 7.12. Topsoil shall be plowed or raked with backhoe
teeth prior to placing the mound fill.
Fill material shall be a medium textured sand, with characteristics as given
in table 7-8, a copy of which is attached.
Absorption bed material shall be porous media consisting of rock fill sized
between 3/4"-2-1/2".
Fill material and absorption bed material are available from local sand and
gravel suppliers.
All materials and installation practices shall comply with applicable Pitkin
County standards.
Mound dimensions for your system are as shown below. Refer to figure 7-13,
(A) cross section and (B) plan view for location of dimensions listed:
A = 10 ft.
d = 50 ft .
D= 1ft.
E = 2 ft.(')
F = 9 in.
u= 1ft.
H = 1-1/2
I=16ft.M*
J = 7 ft.0 )
K = 12 ft.
L = 74 ft.
W = 33 ft.(1
NOTE: (1) Based on 10% slope will
vary depending on actual slope in field.

We suggest that the septic tank and soil absorption mound be installed by a
contractor experienced in the practice of installing these systems.

This is an addendum to our original letter, dated October 11, 1985, for the
purpose of addressing the comments and concerns of Mr. Nelson, the Pitkin
County Sanitarian.
The septic tank shall be equipped with a siphon dosing capability as
recommended by Mr. Nelson. Pre -fabricated tanks with built-in siphons are
available in 1,000 gallon capacity to meet this requirement.
The absorption mound shall have four distribution laterals, 1-1/2" diameter,
28" O.C. served by a 2" diameter manifold. The manifold shall enter the
absorption bed at or near the centerline of the long axis. (dimension B)
The septic tank shall be within 50 feet of the absorption mound, and the
outlet shall be four feet higher in elevation to provide a minimum head at
the end of the distribution pipes of 2 ft.
A sieve analysis shall be run on the fill material to assure that it meets
the standards specified in table 7-8.
We recommend that you have all phases of the tank and mound installation
checked and approved by the Pitkin County Sanitarian during construction.
Very truly yours,

Dear Dav
This is 4n addendum to our previous treatment system design presented in our
letters datea October 11 and October 17, 1985.
We have re -designed the absorption field distribution piping to utilize the
standard 4" diameter perforated draintile available locally.
The absorption mound shall have three distribution laterals which shall be
4" diameter PVC perforated draintile, spaced at 36" O.C.. The pipe from the
dosing tank to the drainfield shall be 4" diameter PVC.
The dosing tank shall be within 50 feet of the absorption mound, and the
outlet shall be a minimum of three feet higher than the absorption bed.
All other specifications shall remain the same.

ursuant to Pitkin County Building Code requirements we are submitting this
letter to verify the installation of the septic tank, dosing chamber and
absorption mound on the Dave Elston property in Brush Creek Village. The
absorption mound system was designed by Wright Water Engineers and
installed by a private contractor under the supervision of Mr. Elston.
Wright Water Engineers aid not observe the installation but did make a
field inspection of the site on November 22, 1985 after completion of the
installation.
The size and location of the absorption field is as specified and the mound
was covered with straw. At the time of inspection the mound was not covered
with topsoil. The location of the field with respect to the septic tank
and dosing chamber is in accordance with the recommendations in our letter
Bated October 28, 1985. The septic tank and dosing chamber are separate
precast fiberglass tanks. The 4" diameter pipe from the dosing chamber to
the absorption mound is as specified.
•lound construction, bedding material and distribution laterals were covered
and therefore could not be inspected.
If additonal information is required please contact us.
