PTTVTAT ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT Enclosed please find your receipt showing payment for the fireplace application and individual sewage disposal system application. I have also sent you a duplicate copy of the fireplace permit. As we discussed at the site visit on February 6, a percolation test will have to be performed and a profile hole dug in the proposed area of the absorption field in the spring once the ground has thawed sufficiently. Once the perc test results are received, I will review the data and make recommendations for the system's size and design based on 4 bedrooms unless an engineer -designed -system is necessary. I.have.released the building plans from this Department, but have made a notation that the septic system will be sized in the spring. LJ EN✓i;_�ONMENTAL HEALTH ASPEN/PITKIN The purpose of this letter is to provide a final inspection report for the Levy ISDS, Lot 3, Block 3, Brush Creek Village, Pitkin County, Colorado. The inspection consisted of two site visits, one during the sand backfilling process and the second just prior to backfilling the system. At the time of the first visit, the four -foot sand layer was placed and being flooded with water to ensure settlement prior to the placement of the infiltrator units. the bed was excavated into the fractured shale at all points of the bed and there was a 20 mil PVC line placed around the perimeter of the sand. The bed was split into two areas as depicted on the plans. The beds, infiltrator placement, distribution line placement, piping to the beds, and septic dosing tanks were installed at the time of the second site visit. A few variations from the design plans were noted at this visit. The lower bed consisted of 24 infiltrators placed in five rows. The westernmost row having only 4 units and the remainder 5 units. The upper bed consisted of 20 infiltrators (5 rows of 4 units each). The beds were fed from header pipes located between the two beds. These two header pipes are fed from a 4" line which tees off to the two header pies in lieu of the distribution box. Please see enclosed sketch of the as -built beds. The septic tank and dosing tank were installed as per the plans. Vents were being installed, two on each row of infiltrators. Box 9398 Aspen, CO 81612 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design for a 2 -acre Parcel of Land, Lot 3, Block 3, Filing 1, Brush Creek Village Subdivision, numbered as 0260 Medicine Bow Road Dear Peter, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests on the subject property to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study according to Section 5-1 through 5-5 of Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulation (Revised May 1995) on Thursday and Friday, June 8 and 9, 1995. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter and an individual sewage disposal system permit application to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest opportunity so that you may obtain a permit to construct this sewage system. Proposed Construction: The planned residence is a four bedroom, four bathroom, two-story frame house. The total living area of the house is calculated to be 3200 square feet. The property is to be served by the subdivision domestic water supply from Snowmass Village Water and Sanitation District. Site Conditions: The site is a lot in the Brush Creek Village Subdivision. Typical of the lots in this portion of the subdivision, the building site is located in an area covered with oak brush, serviceberry and grasses. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the proposed absorption field, slopes more gently to the Southeast at a 10% to 15% grade. Much of the property, however, is much steeper, with portions of the lot approaching 40 to 50 % slopes There are no irrigation ditches or streams in the immediate area. P.O. The excavation revealed that no groundwater or bedrock present within ten feet of the surface of the ground. The soils on the property consisted of 38 inches of very dark gray clay loam topsoil overlaying a lighter tan clay loam grading to a coarse clay loam with some small shale fragments. The subsoil was moist and smeared and compacted under the pressure of the excavating equipment toward the bottom of the profile pit excavation. Percolation Testing: The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The subsoil, in which the percolation testing was done, consisted of a clay loam. These tan soils were very moist and well consolidated, and showed some tendency to swell. The test holes were prepared by hand -digging a small hole in the bottom of a forty inch deep backhoe excavation. Three inches of gravel were placed in each test hole after all loose soil had been removed, and the test hole sidewalls roughened. In the test hole preparation, care was taken to avoid smearing the surfaces. Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area location. The percolation holes were pre-soaked by adding water to the test holes at regular intervals throughout the two days, with an initial filling of approximately twelve gallons the day the test was begun. Water was then added to the test holes for nine and one-half hours on June 8, until 7:00 p.m. The next morning water was again added from 9:30 a.m. until the measurement were done at 2:30 p.m. Presoaking, therefore, was accomplished for the minimum required time of eight hours, and then for more than twenty-four hours before beginning the percolation test. When the test began, the test holes contained about 4 inches of water from a refilling occurring about an hour before. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy clay loam soils have an average percolation rate of 19 minutes per inch and are acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated.
