Enclosed please find your receipt showing payment for the fireplace
application and individual sewage disposal system application. I
have also sent you a duplicate copy of the fireplace permit.
As we discussed at the site visit on February 6, a percolation test
will have to be performed and a profile hole dug in the proposed
area of the absorption field in the spring once the ground has
thawed sufficiently. Once the perc test results are received, I
will review the data and make recommendations for the system's size
and design based on 4 bedrooms unless an engineer -designed -system
is necessary.
I.have.released the building plans from this Department, but have
made a notation that the septic system will be sized in the spring.
I do not recommend beginning the construction of the home until the
placement of the septic system has been verified.

The purpose of this letter is to provide a final inspection report for the Levy ISDS, Lot 3, Block
3, Brush Creek Village, Pitkin County, Colorado. The inspection consisted of two site visits,
one during the sand backfilling process and the second just prior to backfilling the system.
At the time of the first visit, the four -foot sand layer was placed and being flooded with water
to ensure settlement prior to the placement of the infiltrator units. the bed was excavated
into the fractured shale at all points of the bed and there was a 20 mil PVC line placed around
the perimeter of the sand. The bed was split into two areas as depicted on the plans.
The beds, infiltrator placement, distribution line placement, piping to the beds, and septic
dosing tanks were installed at the time of the second site visit. A few variations from the
design plans were noted at this visit. The lower bed consisted of 24 infiltrators placed in five
rows. The westernmost row having only 4 units and the remainder 5 units. The upper bed
consisted of 20 infiltrators (5 rows of 4 units each).
The beds were fed from header pipes located between the two beds. These two header pipes
are fed from a 4" line which tees off to the two header pies in lieu of the distribution box.
Please see enclosed sketch of the as -built beds.
The septic tank and dosing tank were installed as per the plans. Vents were being installed,
two on each row of infiltrators.
To summarize, this ISDS was installed as per the plans and specifications prepared by SGM,
dated September 1, 1995.

T'he domestic water supply for the pmperty is from the Homeowners' Association water system
supplied by the Snowmass Water and Ssaitationt District. The water service line is already in

The lot is appMdtu _Zscxps'in size and located in the Btvsl Creek -Village Subdivision. Most
bfthe property -slopes -to the south and west -at grades up to 40 % However, the ground suAm
in the proposed area of the Absorption f1Gid slopes to the East -acid -East Southeast -at' 12% to -201%.
The slope, in the turn of the driveway at the site of the proposed septic systern appears natural.
Tho propecty_is_.covered with oak brush_
A soil premie pit; excavated across the area considered suitable for as ori -site wastewater disposal
system absorption field, was dug to a depth of approximately ten feet. the excavation revealed
that no groundwater was ewotmtered to that depth- At depths varying from two to ten feet, a
matrix of tan sandy silt and small, fractured shale Ragments was encountered, becoming coarser
and predominating on the uphill side of the excavation_ The slope of the terrain and fractured
shale was such that the soil overburden became deeper and exuded tent feet on the side of the
pmfle excavation toward the road.

The soils within tie profile excavation consisted of 23 to 38 inches of •silty clay overlaying a
lighter tan silty clay loam with loose shale fragtnems grading to a layer of fractured shale with
fragments three or four inches in diameter belowa-deptlt of five feet at the center of this cut.
Ptmn-Te�tine:
The subsoil .conditions were -reevaluated with the standard percolation test procedures it
the aapproxirnate location shown on Mgnre 1A. The test holes were excavated to --a depth-
tticipatmg-the ftmallafion of sleverbed with a three-foot eut-on-t}inside-tharwas-most_dawnhM
and were dug to the same elevation. The -subsoil of percolation test hole 44 , in which the
percolation testing was done, consisted of -a matrbc of a small amount of sandy clay loam and
m=erous loose shale -fragments, and the uphill cut above this test hole displayed a four That cut
into -the Bred shales_ On the other hand, the subsoil of percolation test hole 42 consisted
sandy clay loam and a few loose shale $agments. It appeared that this test hole 0 --only
penetrated -eighteen: inches or so into the.loosefiactured shale.
The test bolts were prepared by hand -digging a small hole iu the bottom of a forty inch deep
backhoe excavation- Four inches of gavel were placed in each test hole after all loose soil -bad
been removed and the test hole sidewaN roughened- The test hole preparation avoided smearing
t�so�suzFaces:
The permlation holes were_pwnsaaked by -adding -water to a depth -of tern incites above the gravel
1ayentLe:eVMAn9 re. the test -m � +s orfd lat_intezvals-thro�tgltouf the day. Ja test
hole 1, the absorption rate was so rapid tbat it was difficult to stabilize the absorption raze. In
hole 2, an initial filag of approximately eighteen gallons was done the evening before the test was
conducted. water was then added every hour for another eight hours during the day. When -the
test began, .the test holes were -empty, and. were refilled to a depth of twelve inches above the test
hole bottom.

clay loam sods nixed into the fractured shale frnments had an avmW percolation rate of 3
mimttes per inch Soils with a percolation rate -this -rapid are considered unsuitable and are not
acceptable for a. conventional irdilt aEou design for the on-site sewage system. Due to theslope,
inconsistent results and unsuitable, rapidly permeable soil, Colorado law requires that the on-site
selvage disposal system be de:fq ed by a registered professional engineer. We refer you to Dan
Coldey of Schmeus.:r, Gordon and Meyer Engineering for this site-specific septic system design.

As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and
percolation tests on the subject property to design a septic system for the proposed residence.
We conducted this study according to Section 5-1 through 5-5 of Pitkin County Individual
Sewage Disposal System Regulation (Revised May 1995) on Thursday and Friday, June 8 and
9, 1995. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please
furnish this letter and an individual sewage disposal system permit application to the Aspen/Pitkin
Environmental Health Department at your earliest opportunity so that you may obtain a permit to
construct this sewage system.
Proposed Construction:
The planned residence is a four bedroom, four bathroom, two-story frame house. The total living
area of the house is calculated to be 3200 square feet.
The property is to be served by the subdivision domestic water supply from Snowmass Village
Water and Sanitation District.
Site Conditions:
The site is a lot in the Brush Creek Village Subdivision. Typical of the lots in this portion of the
subdivision, the building site is located in an area covered with oak brush, serviceberry and
grasses.
The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the proposed absorption field,
slopes more gently to the Southeast at a 10% to 15% grade. Much of the property, however, is
much steeper, with portions of the lot approaching 40 to 50 % slopes There are no irrigation
ditches or streams in the immediate area.

Subsurface Conditions:
A soil profile pit, within an area considered suitable for an on-site wastewater disposal system
absorption field, was excavated.. The excavation revealed that no groundwater or bedrock
present within ten feet of the surface of the ground.
The soils on the property consisted of 38 inches of very dark gray clay loam topsoil overlaying a
lighter tan clay loam grading to a coarse clay loam with some small shale fragments. The subsoil
was moist and smeared and compacted under the pressure of the excavating equipment toward
the bottom of the profile pit excavation.
Percolation Testing:
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the
approximate location shown on Figure 1. The subsoil, in which the percolation testing was done,
consisted of a clay loam. These tan soils were very moist and well consolidated, and showed
some tendency to swell. The test holes were prepared by hand -digging a small hole in the bottom
of a forty inch deep backhoe excavation. Three inches of gravel were placed in each test hole
after all loose soil had been removed, and the test hole sidewalls roughened. In the test hole
preparation, care was taken to avoid smearing the surfaces.
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area location. The percolation
holes were pre-soaked by adding water to the test holes at regular intervals throughout the two
days, with an initial filling of approximately twelve gallons the day the test was begun. Water was
then added to the test holes for nine and one-half hours on June 8, until 7:00 p.m. The next
morning water was again added from 9:30 a.m. until the measurement were done at 2:30 p.m.
Presoaking, therefore, was accomplished for the minimum required time of eight hours, and then
for more than twenty-four hours before beginning the percolation test. When the test began, the
test holes contained about 4 inches of water from a refilling occurring about an hour before.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy
clay loam soils have an average percolation rate of 19 minutes per inch and are acceptable for a
conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system.
Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area
for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in
this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is
some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may

not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if
further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be
advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate our
recommendations.

GENERAL NOTES.-
1. All materials, installation practices, setback
requirements, etc., shall comply with the Pitkin County
Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations.

3. Piping to system shall be standard solid wall sewer pipe,
ASTM 2729 -Sewer and Drain Leachfie/d Pipe,
4. The area disturbed by construction shall be reseeded with
native grasses to prevent erosion.
5. Use risers as needed to bring septic tank access hatch
within 6" of finished grade.
6. Cast iron pipe of equal strength or other pipe properly
supported to prevent failure by settling shall extend
from tank for a distance of at least five feet (5) from
the inlet and outlet ends.
7. The following preventative maintenance schedule is
recommended to prolong the life of the system:
a) Pump septic tanks at least once a year.
b) Check plumbing fixtures on a regular basis and repair
all leaks which can add substantial amounts of water
to the system.
8. The Contractor and Owner shall take whatever measures
are necessary to assure that a) the septic tank and
sewer lines are completely water tight to prevent
infiltration of groundwater into the system, and
b) the system is installed to prevent freezing of
gravity sewer lines.
9. The Pitkin County Environmental Health Department and
the Engineer shall be notified when construction
commences and kept abreast of the construction progress
so that sufficient inspection can be performed to assure
conformance with these plans. Provide a minimum of 48
hours notice to each.
10. If number of bedrooms or persons per bedroom varies from
design assumption used to calculate flow, contact
engineer prior to installation.
11. If douse is installed with intense water consumptive
fixtures normally not associated with typical domestic
fixtures, contact engineer prior to installation.
