The sand must conform to Section 12-5 of the Pitkin County ISDS regulations and an invoice to document the sand material must be submitted. This department does not endorse any brand of products. The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. Four pressure -distributed chamber -beds with four - feet of imported `Pitkin County ISDS Sand' was installed. Each bed had two rows of eight chambers for a total area of 1488 square feet. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The pumps and alarms were installed at the time of our site visit. The construction foreman, Don Ice with All Season Builders, may activate pumping system at his discretion. The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. Box 301 Basalt, Colorado 11621 Subject: Subsurface Investigation and OWS Design, Proposed Larson Residence Lot 4, Block 1, Filing 2 Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 13491W Mr. Barth, As requested we have investigated subsurface conditions and designed an onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the proposed residence at the subject site. Our office conducted the subsurface investigation on May 19, 2001. SITE CONDITIONS The lot is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The proposed drain field area is located on a steep slope of 25%-35%. There is a thin cover of scrub oak and grasses in the proposed field area. This is the most suitable location for the drain field. Water will be provided by the local water district. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A five -bedroom residence with 4500 square feet (SF) of living area is proposed at the location presented on Figure 1. The OWS was based on 5 bedrooms and 1000 gallons per day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Envir- onmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1750 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was conducted by digging one profile pit and three percolation holes, 12 to 15 inches deep, as indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions consisted of 6 inches of sandy topsoil, underlain by highly fractured Mancos shale bedrock to the maximum explored depth of 6 feet. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 27 to 40 minutes per inch (MPI), with an average percolation rate of 32 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Figure 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1750 GPD and a percolation rate of 32 MPI. The installation must include one 1500 -gallon, single -compartment, precast concrete septic tank followed by one 1000 -gallon, two- compartment, pre -cast concrete septic tank with dual effluent pumps in a Biotube® pump vault and four chamber -beds with four feet of imported sand filter material. Sand specifications must be followed as indicated on Figure 2. Each bed must have 2 rows of 8 chambers for a total of 96 chambers. Pumps with a total flow rate of 29.5 Gallons Per Minute (GPM) and a Total Dynamic Head (TDM of 19.9 feet are required to pressurize the distribution system at the field. The beds are to be angled to match the contour of the slope using 15 degree InfiltratorTM Contour® Wedges. Several contour wedges may be used if angles greater than 15 degrees is required. Based on a. subsurface conditions, b. pressure dosing of drain field, c. proposed imported sand filter material, and d. depth of imported sand filter material, we believe the setback distance to the dry gulch can be reduced to 25 feet. The resultant flow from the drain fields will not be directed towards dry gulch. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel. The surface of the drain fields should be re-established to approximate the natural slope and then be reseeded. We recommend using a native seed mix. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for continued maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, we recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during the regular tank pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS A contractor who is experienced in OWS installation should install the OWS design. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS.
