On May 4th a site visit was conducted to evaluate the existing drain fields and implications of the existing liners. A letter was provided. On July 191h we observed the septic tanks, and requested a filter handle. We requested the primary outlet tee be raised, and a change in the 90 deg fitting in the Flow Splitter Basin. On August 91h we observed prior requests completed. The installation included a 2500 gallon single compartment septic tank, followed by a 2000 gallon single compartment septic tank with an effluent filter, followed by a 500 gallon septic tank with a dosing siphon. The drain field consisted of 10 gravelless chamber trenches with a total of 198 Q-4 chambers, equaling an area of 1955 SF. A flow splitter basin serves effluent to the drain field. The OWTS was generally installed according to specifications. This observation is not a guarantee of workmanship and/or parts and materials. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified if changes are made to the OWTS. LIMITS: The observation was based on information submitted and our site visit. If conditions are different from conditions described in this letter, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. All additional OWTS construction must be according to the county regulations. The installer should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC Timothy R. If there is no interaction with the existing drain fields, and the proposed trenches are not within 20 feet of existing lined ETA beds, the ETA beds do not have to be altered. But I did think about it! The existing field is a lined (10 mil PVC) ET bed with pipe and gravel covered with a mirifi fabric (or 4" straw over the distribution piping). It might be feasible to perforate the liner rather than digging it up. It looks like the system is 2-6" of topsoil, 7" of sand, fabric, 13" of rock, and the liner under that, so about 2' deep. Of course any portion of the new field that overlaps the old will need to be entirely removed, but I don't know if there would be any harm in leaving the rest of the system in place and providing a mechanism for water to get through it. We don't want additional water to be diverted toward the new system. Tim, what do you think??? The property is located outside of Aspen, in an area where OWTS and wells are necessary. The revision is based on a tank and drain field sizing clarification. SITE CONDITIONS A single-family residence presently exists and is utilizing an OWTS, The current drain field will have to be abandoned, and the liners partially removed due to existing trees. An 11 -bedroom residence having over 6000 SF is planned. Remodeling will take place. The proposed drain field area slopes 8% to the west, and vegetation consists of a moderate cover of grasses with sparse trees. The property is served by a well located 300+ feet to the southwest of the residence. SUBSURFACE The subsurface was investigated by drilling one profile hole and 3 percolation holes, as indicated. The materials encountered in the profile hole consisted of 1.5 feet of sandy clay topsoil, underlain by sandy clay with scattered rocks to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. Groundwater or bedrock was not encountered. Three percolation holes were dug, in the area of the proposed drain field, as indicated. Percolation rates ranged from 10 to 20 minutes per inch (MPI). A 17 MPI rate will be used to design the OWTS. ® Onsite Wastewater Systems Page 2 DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS The OWTS design is based on 11 -bedrooms and an average sewage load of 2200 GPD. The installation must include a 2500 -gallon, single -compartment, precast concrete septic tank, to be followed by a 2000 -gallon, single compartment concrete septic tank with an effluent filter, followed by a 500 gallon septic tank with a dosing siphon. (Front Range Precast out of Boulder 303-442-3207 can supply large tank). Tank alternatives may be considered. Ten gravelless chamber trenches, using " `Quick -4' InfiltratorTM chambers, must be installed as indicated. There must be a total of 198 chambers and 1955 SF of infiltrative area. A flow splitter basin must be installed to distribute effluent. Construction must be according to the Pitkin County Environmental Health and Natural Resources Department OWTS regulations, the OWTS Construction Permit provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health and Natural Resources Department, and this design. OPERATION INFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE The surface of the drain field should be seeded upon completion. Vegetation is an important factor in drain field performance. Erosion control should be practiced prior to and during re -vegetation. Geo - fabrics or plastics should not be used over the drain field. No heavy equipment, machinery, or materials should be placed on backfilled drain field. Livestock should not graze on the drain field. Plumbing fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWTS. For Example, a running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a drain field. The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years and clean the effluent filter as needed. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non -biodegradable materials should not be placed into the OWTS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWTS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWTS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWS. The OWTS is engineered for domestic waste only. ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES If design includes a pump, air release valves and weep holes should be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of drain field due to the potential to compact soil. Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade. Precast concrete tanks and distribution boxes should be used, unless plastic or fiberglass is required. Access to all tank compartments and distribution devices is optimal. INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS ALL SERVICE septic, LLC, and the county must view the OWTS during construction. The OWTS observation should be performed before backfill, after placement of chambers and distribution pipes. Septic tanks, distribution devices, pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified 48 hours in advance to observe the installation. L LIMITS: 1 Onsite Wastewater Systems Page 3 The design is based on information submitted. If soil conditions encountered are different from conditions described in report, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. All OWS construction must be according to the county regulations. Requirements not specified in this report must follow county regulations. The installer should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. Please call with questions.
