ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Based on percolation test data and partial soil log
evaluation of the referenced building site, this department
would require or recommend the following design aspects
for an on --site wastewater disposal system:
1. A minimum 1500 gallon septic tank as required under
Pitkin County Regulations. As we discussed, due to local
availability of precast concrete tank, it is probably more
economical and certainly will improve system life to use
two 1000 -gallon septic tanks in series. We would suggest that
the tank nearer the house consist of a properly baffled,
single -chambered tank to improve the sludge storage capabilities
of the.system.
2. Absorption trench area at the measured rate is required
to be 300 square feet per bedroom (1500 sq. ft.). We would
recommend that these trenches be installed at the minimu m
depth to increase aeration of the absorption field and take
advantage of the infiltration capacity of the top soil layer
rather than the underlying silts and clays.
3. It would appear that further data and engineering opinions
are necessary to determine ground water movement and drainage
patterns. These are probably not going to affect the sewage
system opE?ration, but as I mentioned, due to problems encountered
on adjacent, uphill lots an expert opinion seems warranted.
In summary, it appears that a septic system located and designed
as on the enclosed approved prints is an acceptable solution for
on-site wastewater disposal. Should you have further questions,
please call.

MEMORANDUM
TO: The Record
FROM: Dean W. Gordon, P.E. ,
RE: Sine Inspection O
Dr, Parrish ISDF
I made an inspection today at approximately 1:00 P.M. of the individual
sewage disposal system being constructed for Dr. Parrish in Starwood.
At the tin* of the visit, the Contractor was installing the peripheral
curtain dralin around the disposal system.
The Contracttor appeared to be doing an adequate job of installation.
On site was a builder's level with level rod to check grade. Upon
questioning, the periperal drain was being installed correctly with
filtration fabric, plastic sheeting, washed gravel and 4" perforated
pipe. The septic tank and dosing siphon were exposed. The tanks were
bedded in sand; at the time of the inspection, no external piping was
completed into or out of either tank. The gravity line into the tanks
was 4"; thej dosing line was 2".
The disposal field itself was backfilled. Based upon my questions to
the equipmejnt operators, it appears that normal installation procedures
were being followed by the Contractor.
I left instruction with the Contractor to continue to backfill the sep-
tic tank and dosing siphon with sand. I directed that the curtain
drain should be totally encased with the fabric and plastic liner.
There should be positive drainage off the surface of the disposal sys-
tem itself. Before leaving the site, I suggested that the dosing
siphon be operated to verify performance.
