We conducted this study in accordance with Article 5 of the Pitkin County individual Sewa¢c Disposal System Retulttion on September 29, 1997. We have based. our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered- Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at our earliest convenience in order for you to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Existing Construction and Pr !;n Septic intems: The house after remodeling will be a five bedroom, five and one-half bathroom, two story structure of approximately 5000 square feet of living area. Where is also an attached one bedroom, one bathroom attached caretaker unit in the house. This unit will contain about 600 square feet. There were three septic systems already on the property. The first was built last year for the barn. The other two were done previously as replacement septic systems to the main house. As we understand from the excavator, only one of these systems is to be retained in place to treat part of the wastewater flow from the residence. This investigation is to evaluate the soil in order to construct another new onsite sewage system for wastewater flows from the south part of the main house. Site Conditions: The property is a lot in the Starwood Subdivision of approximately 5 acres. The existing main residence on the property is being enlarged and remodeled. The drinking water to the house is to be provided from the subdivision water system. The road and access drive are constructed. The building site is on a portion of the lot located above a lateral of the Red Mountain Ditch flowing through the lot from South to North and is just west of the maid, residence. This ditch. is P.O. The lot vegetation is primarily pasture and mature landscape. The higher areas of the property, near the main residence, are vegetated with young aspen trees and oak brush. The ground surface of the site appears natural throughout the proposed area of the new absorption field. The ground slopes to the west at a 15% grade is this area. There is an unused well located in the pasture lot about 260 feet below the planned, new absorption system. Sub urfacr Conditions: A soil profile pit was excavated to a depth of nine and one-half feet. The profile excavation was done about ten feet above the proposed absorption area site. No groundwater was encountered and bedrock was not present within nine feet of the surface of the ground. The top twenty-four to thirty inches of soil in the profile excavation was a dark gray -brown topsoil with a characteristic clay loam texture. Below the topsoil and to the bottom of the profile excavation, a slightly moist, reddish fine sandy clay of relatively uniform consistency was present. This subsoil contained a few angular rock fragments froze two to ten inches in size. Both the topsoil and the clay exhibited some smearing and compaction from the pressure of earthmoving, equipment. The soil conditions were evaluated with standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1 _ The soil in which the percolation testing was conducted consisted of the topsoil and the bottom of each hole was just into the reddish sandy clay. The soil was well consolidated and showed some tendency to swell when wet_ Percolatjon_Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area west of the building and north of the existing barn. The shallow holes were hand dug with an post hole auger at the bottom of backhoe excavations dug to a depth of two and one-half feet. They were cleaned out with hand tools before the initial presoak was begun. Before presoaking for the percolation test, the sidewalls were scraped, and three inches of gravel were placed in the bottom of each hole to protect the bottom of the hand dug test holes from fine, scoured soil coming off the sidewalls as the water was added. We pre-soaked the percolation test holes by adding water at regular 0 Shield Residence Remodel _ Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design Lot R-12, Starwood Subdivision October 15, 1997 Page 3 intervals for approximately eight hours before starting the percolation test measurements. The a test holes were refilled every two hours until evening. Some water remained in the percolation test holes after the presoaking periods_ The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy clay topsoil exhibited percolation rates between 32 and 57 minutes per inch, with an average percolation rate of 43 minutes per inch, slow but acceptable_ This topsoil is considered a suitable soil for a conventional infiltration trench design for the on-site sewage system, although the underlying clay layer may be a limiting factor. To utilize the sandy clay topsoil as the absorption material! we recommend trenches. These trenches should be installed no deeper than 24 inches. Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our recomtnendatiens. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, Robert F. Nelson President Reviewed By' ' `• • • •' •SF 0.
