YES - We anticipate this two day event to draw an estimated 300 to 350 total
participants over two days. A maximum of 500 participants is permitted by the US
Forest Service.

Yes- A field team coordinating meeting will be held the week prior to the event.

Yes- A Public Announcement system will be utilized at the Finish in Ajax Park on
Saturday, 9/2/17 from 10 AM to 6 PM

Boundaries:
Descending the single track - Ajax Trail, the Trail Run Race will end at the base of Ajax
Mountain in the City of Aspen - Ajax Park (reserved from 9:00 AM to 7 PM on
Saturday, September 2nd.)
An inflatable "finish arch" will be erected in this area, as well as a small vendor expo,
comprised of of 5 to 10 sponsor tents (10' x 10' - pop up's). One 10 x 10 tent will be
designated for the race emcee who will do live audio broadcasting over a PA system.
Medical and Safety:
Emergency Medical Coverage within the Pitkin County portion of the course will be
provided by Event Medical Solutions Unlimited, 2 Paramedics stationed at Taylor Pass.
Additionally, we will contract an Aspen Valley Hospital ambulance to be.on duty at the
Ajax Park finish line.
Transportation and Parking:
Participants and spectators will be informed that parking at Ajax Park will be very
limited and that street parking along Ute Avenue is the most immediate parking in the
vicinity of the event finish area.
A shuttle service will be provided to participants who register for return transportation
to Crested Butte. Two vans will load at the Ajax Park parking lot at 6 PM.

Sanitation and Solid Waste:
2 portable toilets will be contracted by Mountain Waste & Recycling to be placed in the
finish area parking lot.
The collection of recyclable and disposable event waste will be contracted through
Mountain Waste & Recycling.
This event endeavors to generate as little disposable waste as possible. It is our intention
to capture the majority of waste as recyclable waste streams.
Alcohol, Food Service, Vending and Tech Areas:
Race finishers will be served to a FREE BBQ meal prepared by our contracted caterer
(Smoke BBQ).
Within a defined liquor area, beer will be served FREE of charge to race participants, as
well as for sale to spectators.
ID checking, liquor security and beer serving will be administered by a TIPPS trained
beer representative from our event partner - Upslope Brewing. Participants of legal
drinking age will be identified by a blue wristband after they've presented valid ID.
Mountain Bike - 9/3/2017 - 7 AM START

Boundaries:
The Mountain Bike Start will be sited at the I base area on Aspen Ski Co. property.
The race route will follow the Summer Road to the summit of Ajax Mountain,
continuing out Richmond Ridge road, exiting Pitkin County at the top of Taylor Pass.
Medical and Safety:
Our primary EMS measure within the Pitkin County portion of the event is to have a
Aspen Mountain Rangers on duty for the 1 A start through the duration of the Ajax hill
climb. Beyond the ASC boundary medical coverage will again be the jurisdiction of our
contracted Event Medical Soluntions Unlimtited paramedics, stationed at Taylor Pass.
Transportation and Parking:
Mountain Bike race participants will be informed that street parking is the most
immediate parking in the vicinity of the event start. Additionally, they will be informed
of the public parking lot at Gilbert and S. Aspen St.
Sanitation and Solid Waste:
Restrooms for participants will be made available at the Aspen Ski Co. I lift building.
Solid waste will be minimal, as no disposable products will be distributed at the start. A
few waste bins located at the start area will collect the minimal trash.

Race updates will be disseminated via the Grand Traverse website-
summer.thegrandtraverse.org as well as via social media channels- Grand Traverse
Facebook Page, Grand Traverse Facebook Athlete Forum and Twitter feed
@EMGTskirace.
Primary Course Communications:
The event utilizes a fleet of UHF/VHF programmed race radios. A primary race channel
will be used for communication between race support teams and Race Dispatch.
Through installation of temporary radio repeaters, this communication system functions
the entire distance of the course, from Crested Butte race dispatch to Aspen finish line,
and all points in-between.
A satellite phone will be employed as a secondary emergency communication system,
when radio transmission is not feasible or practical. There will be on satellite phone
present on course at Taylor Pass for emergency communication to Race Dispatch and/or
to Race Directors located at the Aspen finish location.
Cell phone communication will be utilized where available. Primarily between race staff
located in Aspen Base to Race Dispatch in Crested Butte.

licensed EMTs and Paramedics no less than 30 day's prior to the event.
2) Equip all healthcare providers with a "back pack" of medical supplies which
will contain adequate trauma and medical supplies to treat and diagnose
predicted injurieslllnesses
'ALS healthcare providers will be equipped with IV solutions and medications
TBD by event MD. ALS providers to also be supplied with Supraglottic airway
devices.
"Each 'team" on -course to be supplied with at least [111 'D' size Oxygen
cylinder and appropriate delivery devices. Each "team" to also be supplied with
[1] immobilization/extrication device, ie.. SKED or Long Back Board. In addition
to [1] AED per 'team'
3) As per Service Agreement EMS Unlimited to document all care provided,
covered by Professional liability and sponsored by state licensed MD.
4) When possible, EMS Unlimited will provide a CB EMS Unlimited
representative to attend any planning or pre -race meetings.
5) EMS Unlimited will coordinate all pre -event and during event
medical/emergency planning with local 911, SAR, helicopter assets to ensure

Safety & Communications Plan
Introduction
The purpose of this Plan is to set forth organizational responsibilities, and communication procedures for the
safe conduct of the Grand Traverse Mountain Run & Bike- a 40 mile, point-to-point, Trail Run and Mountain
Bike competition occurring on County Roads and U.S. Forest Service trails within Gunnison and Pitkin
Counties.
Maximum participation of this event is capped at 500 total entrants, as authorized by our issued- U.S. Forest
Service- Special Use Permit.

Race Course Descriptions -
Trail Run Course:
Race start time is 6 AM on the 200 block of Elk Avenue in Downtown Crested Butte (adjacent to Post
Office). Departing easterly down Elk Ave, competitors will encounter dirt within .5 miles of the start
when they meet the McCormic Ranch subdivision road. Racers soon join single track at Tony's Trail,
where the course starts a gradual ascent leading to a R -tum connecting them with the Upper Trail (FS -
435.1).
This section climbing the shoulder of Mt. Crested Butte poses a technical 200' climb, followed by a
400' decent to the trail's junction with County Road 738 (L -Tum). The race will remain on this dirt
surfaced road for 2.2 miles, resuming single-track at the junction with Trail 408 (R -Tum), also known
as the "Canal Trail" (1st water crossing on course ).
Mildly ascending for 2.3 miles racers will encounter their second wet stream crossing at Brush Creek,
delivering them soon after to AID #1 (Full Aid —Mile 9.5) The course briefly continues on a narrowly
sketched single-track through the "Death Pass" escarpment. Thereafter, runners merge on to the East
Brush Creek jeep road (FS 738.2B).
Forest Service road 738.2B eventually becomes TR 400, further ascending to one more wet crossing
over East Brush Creek, leading racers shortly thereafter to AID #2 (Limited Aid — Mile
16.5) Departing AID #2 racers will switch back up roughly 1 mile to the top of Star Pass (12,336'—

Star Pass —11:15 AM CUT-OFF
Beyond the summit a gradual single track descent connects to Taylor Pass Divide Road (FS
761.A). This primitive double track road skirts the eastern slopes of Taylor Peak, exponentially
gaining altitude until attaining Taylor flats where the route continues a gentle ascent to the broad
summit of Taylor Pass and AID #3 (Full Aid — Mile 23.5).
AID #3 —12:45 PM CUT-OFF
Gradual climbing continues past AID #3, mixed with an intervening descent before once more
climbing to the route's second highest elevation point at 12,306'. From here the course begins it's
incremental drop in elevation, joining Richmond Hill Road, leading racers onto Aid #4 (Limited Aid —
Mile 28.8) From this second -to- last aid station, racers will be subjected to a 7 mile rolling traverse
over Richmond Ridge, delivering them to Aid #5 (Full Aid — Mile 35.5) at the top of Ajax Mountain!
Entering the Aspen Mountain boundary, racers will embark upon a 3,200' elevation loss over 5 miles.
The descent will utilize the following single track within the Aspen Mountain trail network. East Rim
> Power of 1 > Summer Road > Little Nell. Nearing the base of the mountain, Little Nell trail
intersects with the Ajax Trail.
Look for flagging leading you to make a hard RIGHT TURN through a wood gate on to the City of
Aspen — Ajax Trail. This trail will direct racers to the finish line at Ajax Park in < .25 miles.

Mountain Bike Course:
The Mountain Bike start is 7 AM at the 1 A Base Area of Aspen Mountain, located S. Aspen St. &
Gilbert St.
Riders will launch directly into a sustained 3,300' climb over 5 miles, ascending the Summer Road (CR
-14) to the summit of Aspen Mountain. AID #1 will be distributed here, as will an enforced 9:00 AM
CUT-OFF. Departing the Ski Area boundary, riders will set off on a rolling traverse over Richmond
Ridge Road (CR -15E).
At mile 9.5 riders begin their second sustained climb of 1,292' over 3.4 miles. After an intervening
300 ft. descent, leading into a 300' climb, followed by another 300' descent, riders arrive at AID #2
(mile 16.5) and the Taylor Pass Checkpoint. A 11:30 AM CUT-OFF will be imposed.
Riders continue on a moderate double track descent for 4.5 miles. At mile 18.3, the route begins an
alpine ascent to the top of Star Pass, double track transforms into single track at mile 20.5. Once over
Star Pass, riders will embark on a relentless 11.4 mile descent down the Brush Creek drainage.
Single track turns back into double track at mile 23.4 (FS Road 738.2B). Continuing to mile 28.5,
riders will divert off the jeep road, forking to the south (L. Turn) onto the Death Pass escarpment
traverse. Arriving on the opposite end of this narrow and exposed section, riders will again divert to
the south (L. Turn) onto Farris Creek Trail (TR 409). A short steep descent leads riders to a wide
Brush Creek crossing, a quarter mile beyond this crossing riders will merge westerly (R. Turn) onto the
Canal Trail (TR 408). This single track eventually returns to the dirt surfaced Brush Creek Rd. (CR
738).
The course continues on County Road 738 (Brush Creek Rd.) to AID #3 at mile 35.25 located at the
junction of FS Trail 435.1 (Upper Upper Trail). Riders unable to depart this check point by 2:30 PM
will be CUT-OFF and asked to ride themselves into the Town of Crested Butte via Brush Creek Road
and Hwy 135.
Departing AID #3, the route retums to single track, presenting racers with a challenging 470' climb
over 0.5 miles. After twisting descents through the "bridges" section of the Upper Upper trail, riders
will continue on to their last climb, ascending through a technical rock section. This last 700' stinger
over 1.4 miles tops out at Hunter Hill Road. Intersecting this brief bit of pavement, racers ascend
slightly to their right, following course marking through the San Moritz condo parking lot onto the San
Moritz single track trail. This trail will propel racers on to a descending finish at the base of Crested
Butte Mountain Resort.
IMPORTANT. All information is subject to change. For the safety of racers and volunteers, weather
or other environmental conditions may require a change in the race start time or location, the official
course, or race rules — or may lead to cancellation.

Course Marshal Requirements:
Each aid station will be staffed with a minimum of 3 volunteers. AID #3 at mile 22 will have the greatest race
support contingent, as this is a final cut-off point where a vehicular escort of participants off course may be
required.
Staffed at each Aid Station will be, at least one Medical Captain with some form of advanced medical training.
In addition to traffic control leading the race start on Elk Avenue, course marshals will be required at the
following locations to ensure traffic safety-
♦ Junction of Upper Upper Trail (FS -435.1) and Brush Creek Road (CR- 738)
♦ Junction Brush Creek Road (CR -738) and Canal Trail (FS408)
Aid Stations:
In addition to the Start and Finish line race bases, there are 5 Aid Stations which offer communications, first aid,
nutrition and hydration. Volunteers are instructed on how to handle minor injuries and complications and how to
differentiate between serious emergencies. Minor injuries will be treated at the nearest aid station by certified
medical technicians. Race volunteers are instructed to relay serious emergent situations through the
communication chain of command.

Enforced Cut -Off Times:

Participants who do not make the Star Pass cut-off will be instructed to retrace the course route back to
the W. Brush Creek Trail head, where runners can meet a shuttle that will return them back to
downtown Crested Butte.
Racers cut-off at AID #3, will be asked to depart the course by descending 4.75 miles down the
Express Creek Road to Ashcroft. Van transportation will be waiting in Ashcroft to deliver these runners
to the finish line venue.
To receive a qualified finish time, racers must depart AID #5 by 5:00 PM. Finish line wrap up will
commence at 6 PM.

MTB CUT-OFF
Mountain bike racers cut-off at AID #1 will be instructed to descend Express Creek Road to Ashcroft
and ride themselves back to Aspen via County Road 15C.

Creek Road and Hwy 135.

Emergency Response Procedures:
In the event of an injured party on course, the Aid Station closest to the location of the injured participant will deploy rescue
and medical personnel. The Aid Station Captain will have the responsibility of managing coordination of the rescue.
Following the race chain of command, The Aid station Captain will notify Race Dispatch of the emergent situation -
including the location, type, anticipated time of evacuation and time of arrival at the patient Depending on the
emergency, Race Dispatch will deploy additional race staff support, or alternatively, will notify outside agency authorities
to request assistance with the incident.

Lost Athlete(s)-
A team of Race Sweepers (minimum team of 2 on bicycle), will follow the last participant to the final cut-off,
confirming that each trail segment (the length of trail separated by two aid stations) is cleared, and that all
participants have passed that section.
The following actions will be taken in the event a race competitor fails to finish the race and is reported lost.
1. Conduct a record check of aid station bib check -offs to determine the lost athlete's last confirmed
location.
2. The Race Director will attempt to contact the participant using their personal and/or emergency contact
information.
3. A search will be initiated by the Field Captain employing Race Volunteers focused on the course
segment where the lost athlete was last determined to have been.
4. If the lost athlete is not located by past beyond the appointed "Race Finish", Race Dispatch is authorized
by the Race Director to report a 911 lost person emergency.
Search & Rescue Coverage:
To defray the cost of any mission carried out by a county Search and Rescue team, all participants are required
to possess a current hiking, fishing, hunting, snowmobile license, or purchase a Colorado Recreational Search
and Rescue (CORSAR) card prior to the event.
Outside Agency Request for Assistance:
Any incident requiring advanced medical support, or an assisted evacuation will be initiated by calling 911.
Requests for outside agency assistance is approved through the Race Director and implemented by Race
Dispatch.

notified one week in advance of the event. They will be provided revised race details and an updated contact roster of

PUBLIC INFORMATION:
Race updates will be disseminated via the Grand Traverse website-

Primary Course Communications:
Crested Butte Nordic invested in a radio system including radio repeaters that we put in place for race
day. A primary race channel is used for communication between support teams and the dispatch who
is stationed in Crested Butte. Satellite phone are also part of our communication system when VHF
radio transmission is not feasible or practical (longer conversations). One satellite phone will be present
on course at Taylor Pass Aid #3 for emergency communication to Crested Butte dispatch or Aspen
base. The contracted EMS Provider stationed at the finish area will be given a programed race radio for
emergency medical communication.
Cell phone communication will be utilized where available. Primarily between race staff located at Aspen Base
to Crested Butte- Race Dispatch.
