ENGINEERS & GEOLOGISTS Noy 29, 2002 David Panico 1533 Juniper Hill Road Aspen, Colorado 81611 Subject: Percolation Test and OWS Upgrade Design, Proposed Garfield Residence Addition Lot R-82, Starwood Village Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 9340 Dear Mr. Panico, As requested, we conducted a percolation test and evaluated the existing Onsite Wastewater System (OWS) at the subject property. The existing OWS design, dated March 6, 1998, was for a four-bedroom home and was prepared by our office. The design was based on county regulations prior to revisions made in December 1998. SITE CONDTITONS The site is located in Starwood Village, Pitkin County, Colorado. There is a four-bedroom residence with an OWS existing as indicated on Figure 1. The existing OWS consists of a 2000 -gallon septic tank and six chamber -trenches with an area of 1302 square feet (SF). PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The existing four-bedroom residence is to be upgraded to a five -bedroom residence, having a total area of 5995 SF, as indicated on Figure 1. The OWS was sized based on 5 bedrooms and 1000 gallons per day (GPD) using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1750 GPD. PERCOLATION TEST A percolation test was performed by hand digging four percolation holes, 22 to 33 inches deep, at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Percolation tests indicated percolation rates of 10 to 40 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 22 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table 1. HP Geotech performed a percolation test on May 3, 1996, and indicated an average percolation rate of 20 MPI. RECOMMENDATIONS Because of the change in regulations in 1998, the upgrade must include an increase in septic tank capacity, but requires no additional drain field area. The OWS upgrade requires an additional septic tank to be placed next to the existing tank, as indicated on Figure 1. The design is based on an average sewage load of 1000 GPD and a percolation rate of 22 MPI. The installation for the upgrade should include a 1000 -gallon, two - DENVER 4501 Wadsworth Boulevard Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 CASTLE ROCK 303.660.4358 303.463.9317 Fax: 303.463.9321 EVERGREEN 973.6 LOVELAND 970.663.2455 63.2124 WESTERN SLOPE 970.948.5803 Perc ion Test and OWS Upgrade Design Job No. 9340, 5-22-02 Page 2 compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter at the outlet and one chamber -trench. The eluent filter on the existing tank mae used or replaced. The existing drain field has six trenches with 14 chambers in each trench, for a total infiltrative area of 1302 SF. Installation of a 1000 -gallon septic tank at the subject site would enable the OWS to serve a six -bedroom residence. Based on the 1998 Pitkin County sizing criteria, the field meets the minimum requirements for a 5 -bedrooms residence of 821 SF. OWS sizing calculations from both 1998 and today are presented on Figure 3. LEMTATIONS 'An OWS design must be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations.
