The subject OWTS consists of one 1250 -gallon two-compartment septic tank. The original system was permitted in 1991; however, in 1995 when an OWTS was permitted for an additional dwelling on the parcel, Individual Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) Permit #95064, the original absorption area serving the caretaker dwelling unit (CDU) at 310 Carroll Drive was abandoned and the tank serving the CDU tied into the new absorption area. ISDS Permit 95064 (associated with Parcel ID # 2643-264-01-001) was provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department. The "existing barn" referenced on ISDS Permit 95064 is the subject 2 -bedroom CDU. A letter dated October 24, 1995 from Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd. documents the tie in of the CDU into the proposed system. The septic tank appeared to be in good condition. Both the inlet and outlet tees were present. There is no need to pump the septic tank at this time. A record drawing notes that the absorption area consists of a gravelless chamber bed with 8 rows of 5 gravelless chamber units (presumably Standard Infiltrator® chambers) tied together via a manifold. The absorption area was covered with snow at the time of the inspection. There were no observation ports present, but a clearing in the aspen grove is the presumed area and is consistent with site plans. There were no signs of saturation and no indication of failure in the absorption area. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. This report should be submitted to the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department. The following links are the required application and application checklist. We -conducted this study. in accordance with Article b of the Pitkin County tncitvtdual Sewage CUpM[ System ReoAe4tion. We have based our retc mmendeons on the subsurface conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Departr wmt at our earliest convenience in order for you to obtain a peanit to construct this individual sewage system. ftang and Amoosed GgNMEbon_ There is airsady a byo-bedroom gardWcare#aker unit already eMstn uted on Lot 53A. The septic system for this building consists of a 1250 -gallon concrete septic tank and a seepage bed_of approximately 720 square feet The existing absorption field for this building, however, is in the approximate location of the footprint for the new agriculturai building. It will, theWore, be necessary to abandon the existing seepage bed and to construct the now system to include the wastewater flow from this two bedroom unit and garageMortcshop, as,weil as the new agricultural building. The proposed new agricultur at building is a stmeture of approximaWy SM square feet and will include another barn, ,faurinLiLerage, and an office with one .room to be used by three people for an eight hour work day. The property is on two tots in the Starwood Sut4ivision of approximately 3 to 5 acres. The drinking water to the all of the buildings is now to be provided from the Starwood Subdivision,. although there is an existing well water system on the property. The road and access drives are constructed to tine property and to the area of the new building. The ground slopes to the Southwest at a 106 to 14% grade, In this area. An eight foot soil profile pit was excavated on October 23, 1995_ This excavation revealed that the soil in this Area consists of a dark silty loam topsoil up to two feet thick overlaying a fine reddish brown clayey sand Intermixed with red sandstone cobbles up to a foot in diameter_ The top thirteen to twenty inches of the percolation test holes was a dark black topsoil with a characteristic silty loam texture. Below the topsoil to the bottom of the percolation test holes, there was a reddish brown fm clayey sand of relatively uniform consistency_ The soil was well eonsolidatad and showod little tendency to swell. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test Procedure at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. Percolation testing was pert ned in the proposed absorption area below and Southwest of the building sites_ The shallow holes were dug by hand to a depth of three feet -.The test holes were cleaned out with hand tools and gravel was placed on the bottom of each hole_ The percolation test holes were presoaked initially by adding water approzimatety eight hours before starting the percolation test measurements_ The test holes were refilled several times thereafter until aftemoon and were kept full for three hours before thetest hole measurements. t_ittte or no water remained in the percolation test holes after each of the initial presoaking periods_ Tha results of the percolation testing are presented in Table L The results Indicate the fine day subsoil has a perp Wein rate of 7.7 minutes per inch_ Tnis soil,is considered acceptable for a conventional infiltration trench design for the on-site sewage system_ v 10/2d/B5 10.38 12303 94948 S G M INC Q1003 SAf24l1995 A9-49 303923: ; BOB NELSON, w ,LTD PAGE 04 Ziff Agricultural Building Sols Evaluation and Percolation Te4t.for Individual Sewage; System Design Lots R 23A and 53A, Starwood Subdivision OctOW 24, 1995 Page 3 The soils and terrain in the area of the proposed building do not present any significant limitations to the construction of an on-site sewage disposal system_ We understand that the final design of the septic system is being completed by Dan Cokiey of Schmeussr, Gordon Meyer,. a Registered Professional Engineer. Without water conserving toilets, the ultimate wastewater now from the two egdculhlw buildings and iwo-bedroom caretaker unit is estimated to be about 360 -L-d ns.er_day gallons .iron die ex stin_ g ' retaker unit ane 0 gallons generated by the adfic6 wrxkers during the day_ The minimum Pitkin County requirements for this installation miff be based on a system loaded at that rate. This flow would require another septic tank with a volume of 750 gallons far the new agricultural building, in addition to the one in.place for the caretaker unit, and a minimum of 3_50 square feet of standard absorption bed. If, in the future, another caretaker unit (assumed to be a three-bedroom unit) is approved for the new barn, the minimum requirements for the system would change to using two septic tanks with volumes of 1250 galbns each and absorption area of 780 square feet of standard trench or seepage bed, and 656 square feet of "lnfiitratof" " .trenches. Because it will be diffic ult ' to maintain the minimum saparMion distances .betw aon water and sewer and went lines in this area, we suggest that the standard, 44neh diameter, SDR35 PVC sewer and effluent lines be sleeved with a six4nchSchedule 40 or C -SW fine to prevent leaks_ We envision that the required absorption area can be provided with an "lnfiitratory "A seepage bed terraced on the contour of the hillside. A 30% reduction, allowed. by County regulations, would then require 546 square feet of area, configured in one or two beds with a total width. of 12 feet and 50 feet in length.
