If approval takes longer than o hours, a rate of S55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is S1000. The basic fee of 5330 is due at the time of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the !SDS permit: second, before final approval of the ISOS permit. The system was designed under our Job No. 11839, dated October 18, 1999. The system includes the installation of a 2000 -gallon, single -compartment, pre -cast concrete septic tank, a pump in a Biotube vault in the existing 1250 -gallon tank, a distribution box, and four chamber -beds. The total infiltrative area, including the existing field, is 1558 SF. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The pump, alarm, and Biotube vault are in place and wired. Harriman Construction activated the pumping system on December 15, 1999. The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with the plans and specifications. The revision is for a relocation of the OWS based on additional percolation tests from our October 18, 1999 design report. This letter should be used as an addendum to our original design. This letter includes three revised figures - Figures 2 through 4; a percolation table - Table 1; and a pump curve. The original Figures 2 through 4 should be removed to avoid confusion. SITE CONDITIONS The property is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 20% slope to the southwest, and a cover of native grass with clusters of scrub oak. The main residence has an existing gray water and black water OWS as indicated on Figure 1. The existing "black water" system consists of a 1250 -gallon septic tank, a dosing siphon in a 500 -gallon tank, and an equivalent 597 square foot (SF) "deep gravel' trench OWS. The three -feet of "deep gravel' allows a 30% increase of the 459 SF of the field. The existing OWS was permitted in 1993. There is also a "gray water" OWS for washing machine facilities, which will need to be abandoned, as the entire sewage treatment will be directed through one system. The residence is served water by the local water district. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The existing residence has greater than 6000 square feet (SF) and will be remodeled to have a total of 4 bedrooms. We have sized the OWS based on 4 bedrooms and 1040 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/ Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 130 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1820 GPD. This loading includes a dishwasher and garbage grinder. We are proposing to abandon the existing gray water OWS, and upgrade the existing "black water" OWS to accommodate the entire residence. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS We performed supplementary percolation tests at the locations indicated on Figure 2. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 15 to 40 minutes per inch (MPI), in holes P-7 through P-9. The average percolation rate is 28 MPI. A profile test pit was excavated at the location indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions exposed consist of 1 foot of sandy clay topsoil root zone underlain to 8 feet by very stiff sandy clay, which was reddish brown to brown. No free water or evidence of a seasonal high water table was observed in the test pit. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1820 GPD and a percolation rate of 28 MPI. The existing OWS has effective area totaling 540 fC. This drain field will be used in conjunction with the proposed fields. We recommend the installation of one 2000 -gallon single -compartment, concrete septic tank to be placed in front (up -gradient) of the exist- ing 1250 -gallon septic tank and dosing tank. A duel effluent pumping system should be installed in the dosing tank to replace the dosing siphon. Two `new' distribution boxes are to be placed as indicated on Figure 2 to distribute effluent to the existing distribution box and the proposed drain fields. Three gravelless beds should be installed, the two beds of `A' having 2 rows of 11 chambers and the `B' bed having 2 rows of 10 chambers. The required area for a drain field for the proposed residence would be 1926 SF. The equivalent area of the existing black water drain field is 540 SF, which was subtracted from the 1926, resulting in a required area of 1386 SF. A 30% reduction of the 1386 SF area was taken for use of chambers, result- ing in a required area of 970 SF. It is proposed to add 970 SF of drain field in three chamber beds. DRAIN FIELD PREPARATION Vehicular movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to avoid compaction of the receiving soils. Dump trucks and rubber -tire backhoes are to be kept out of the field excavation. We recommend the bottom of the bed be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel. LIMITATIONS An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS. All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations.
