ISSUE STATEMENT:
People unfamiliar with the location of the Solid Waste Center(SWC) have difficulty finding it.
SWC staff are proposing to install an entrance sign at the corner of Jack Gredig Lane (Dump Road)
and Highway 82. This is a continuation of the discussions staff had with the BOCC on February 14
and May 23, 2017.
BACKGROUND:
There are two Colorado Department of Transportation(CDOT) informational Landfill signs, located
adjacent to the east and west bound lanes of Highway 82, which seem to be ineffective. The facility
is not well marked and can be difficult to find for people who have never been to the site. Staff are
proposing an entrance sign that is visible from both directions on Highway 82 and blends with the
rural and rustic nature of the Community.
The SWC is becoming a more customer friendly recycling and reuse center; staff expect to see an
increase in customer usage over the next several years. An entrance sign to the SWC will help
customers find the site, as well as highlight the SWC as a valuable community asset.
The proposed sign design is a flat stone base with weathered wood planking and steel mounted
lettering. The initial proposed dimensions were 10 feet long by 6.6 feet high by 2 feet wide. The
second proposed sign dimensions were 8 feet long by 5 feet high by 2 feet wide. Feedback from the
recent demonstration mock-up along Highway 82 indicated the sign should be larger. Staff
recommend the sign dimensions should be 9 feet long by 6 feet high by 2 feet wide.
The sign would not be lighted and would be located far enough back from Highway 82 so it will not
interfere with CDOT operations. Staff will work closely with CDOT to ensure compliance with
their requirements.
Pitkin County Code restricts signs along Highway 82 to no more than eight square feet total;
however, there are a number of signs along Highway 82 that exceed this requirement. Signs
exceeding the size requirements include the entrance to Wildcat Ranch, the Pitkin County Airport,
the Buttermilk ski area, Snowmass Village, the Inn at Aspen, and the Airport Business Center.
The purpose of this meeting is to have a discussion on the value of an entrance sign at the SWC.
Staff are seeking direction from the BOCC on whether a sign should be placed at the entrance of
the SWC.

Approve the placement of the proposed Solid Waste Center entrance sign.
