June 19, 1978 Bob Nelson County Sanitation Engineer Pitkin County Courthouse Aspen, Colorado 81611 Dear Bob: I have performed a percolation test for purposes of waste disposal in the Brush Creek Valley for Mr. Ted Koutsoubos. Three test holes were dug parallel to the access road to the house and about ten meters west of the road. The holes were about ten meters apart with the #1 hole being the northernmost one. This septic system is for a building to be moved to the site and used for maintenance. Each hole was dug about two and one-half feet deep with a diameter of six inches at the base. The bottom of each of the holes was filled with two to three inches of gravel and the holes were pre- soaked nearly 24 hours. The results of the tests are as follows: Hole #1 - 5 minutes per inch Hole #2 - 10 minutes per inch Hole #3 - 7 minutes per inch These .are very suitable percolation rates. cc: Ted Koutsoubos Sincerely, LC Nicholas Lampiris Consulting Geologist yF /,/ A F1 Frasier & Gingery, /nc. Bois: 4708 Aspen, Colorado 81611 Re: Sewage Disposal System Cozy Point Ranch - Job No. 932.01 Dear Ms. Renwick: The following report and disposal field has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department, and the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Requirements, effective March 25, 1974. BACKGROUND An existing four-bedroom, single family residence is to be moved to the site and placed on a new foundation. It is anticipated that this residence will have an automatic clothes washer and a garbage disposal. PERCOLATION TESTS On September 13, 1974, John Rynes of this office conducted the required 4 -hour percolation tests within the proposed location of the disposal field. Three holes, as required by the previously mentioned regulations, were used for this test. The results of those tests were as follows: Hole #1 120 min/inch Hole #2 68 min/inch Hole #3 80 min/inch The average rate is approximately 90 min/inch. CIVIL ENGINEERING / LAND SURVEYING / STORM DRAINAGE / STRUCTURAL / TRANSPORTATION / WATER 8 SANITATION Ms. Margo Renwick October 10, 1974 Page Two INSPECTION HOLE An inspection hole was dug to a depth of 8 feet in accordance with the Pitkin County regulations. The material was a gray -brown clayey material to the full depth of 8 feet. No bedrock or other impervious material was encountered. The walls and bottom of the hole remained dry, indicating an absence of natural ground water. AERATED TREATMENT SYSTEM Due to the slower infiltration rate and the reliance upon evapotranspiration, an aerated treatment system is recommended for this site. Any system designed to handle the quantity and type of sewage will be satisfactory, provided it produces a decanted effluent with a high dissolved oxygen content. Aerated effluent is much more readily removed through evapotranspiration than is, non-aerated effluent. The increased efficiency of evapotranspiration reduces the amount which must infiltrate the ground. Due to the marginal percolation tests results, it will be necessary to place as little reliance as possible on infiltration. The aerated treatment system will increase this margin of safety. It is recommended that the supplier or manufacturer of the aerated treatment unit supply you with a certificate stating that the unit is designed and can be built in accordance with Section 8, Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Regulations, effective March 25, 1974, and is capable cf treating the sewage from a four-bedroom residence with a clothes washer and garbage disposal. DESIGN OF THE ABSORPTION FIELD For design purposes, a percolation rate of 90 minutes per inch has been used. I have also included a disposal rate of 0.173 gallons per day per square foot, due to evapotranspiration. This value is a realistic annual average for the site elevation. Detailed calculations are included at the end of this report. The minimum area needed for the disposal field is 2,057 sq. ft., based on the combined rates for infiltration and evapotranspiration. Ms. Margo Renwick October 10, 1974 Page Three A standard sheet of details is included for construction of the disposal field. CONCLUSIONS The sewage disposal system can be constructed in accordance with the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Regulations, using an aerated treatment unit and an effective absorption bed area of 2,057 square feet. A bed 24 feet wide and 86 feet long is recommended. This size would give an effective area of 2,064 square feet. The aerated treatment unit must be located a minimum of 10 feet from any potable water supply line, and 10 feet from any dwelling or other occupied building. The disposal field must be located a minimum of 25 feet from any potable water supply line, 20 feet from any dwelling or occupied building, and 10 feet from the nearest property line. The :Pitkin County Individual Sewage Regulations require that the designing Engineer inspect the completed installation and certify that it has been constructed in accordance with the design as approved by the County Health Department. Please contact us near the completion of construction so we may inspect the facility as required by the regulations. Please don't hesitate to call us if you have any questions concerning this report, or if we may be of further service to you. C L S ELC/js Enclosure Yours very truly, FRASIER & GINGERY, INC. Elmer L.
