E W August 4, 1994 S Kevin Reinarz Kevin Reinarz Construction 2020 Eastbank Point Road P. O. Box 957 Carbondale, Colorado 81623 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design for the Deutsch Residence on Lot 4, Block 1, Filing I, Brush Creek Village Subdivision numbered as 0845 Brush Creek Road Dear Kevin: As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on July 25, 1994. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at our earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The planned residence is a three bedroom, five bathroom, two-stor wood frame house Site Conditions: The property is approximately 2.8 acres in size. The drinking water is to be provided from the subdivision water system through Snowmass Water and Sanitation District. The building site is on a lot located in the Brush Creek Village Subdivision. The lot is covered with oak brush, sagebrush and grasses and weeds. The ground surface, which appears natural throughout the proposed area of building and within the proposed site of the septic system field, a shallower bench that slopes to the Southeast at a 20% grade. Subsurface CoUditions: Soil profile borings, done by Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical are about 140 feet from the proposed absorption area. They were bored to a depth of twenty to thirty feet. The boring encountered no ground water and a claystone bedrock layer was encountered at 16 to 18 feet below the surface of the ground. Loose shale fragments were present in the silty clay layer. Box 6961 Snowmass Village, CO. 81615 Office (303) 923.3289 Home (303) 923.2766 Deutsch Residence 0845 Brush Creek Road August 4, 1994 Page 2 soil texture was a an organic topsoil to a depth of one foot and then a stiff silty clay below. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were hand dug and several inches of gravel placed on the bottom of each hole. The subsoil in which the percolation tests were run, consisted of a silty clay, which extended to the depth of percolation test holes, thirty inches. This grayish subsoil was well consolidated, and showed a slight tendency to swell when wet. Percolation Teslin8: Percolation testing was performed in the approximate location of the proposed absorption field between the driveway switchbacks in an area southeast of the building site. The three shallow holes were hand dug to a depth of thirty inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked the morning of testing. Water was added approximately every hour to two hours before beginning the percolation test. There was no water remaining in any of the percolation test holes when we arrived at the site about 7:00 p.m. to begin the tests. The results of thl percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the silty clay soils have wi average percolation rate of 18 minutes per inch and would be acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation. If further excavation reveals conditions different from those described, additional evaluations may be necessary. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate the recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, Robert F. Nelson President Reviewed By: y ammond, P.E. This letter is to let you know what else needs to be done for work to continue on the system. I also want to acknowledge that you said you had been told that a septic permit had already been issued so were not knowingly working without a permit, and you have agreed to obtain the permit before doing any more work. In order to receive a septic permit, the following is needed in addition to the soils test submitted by Schmeuser, Gordon, Meyer: a completed septic system permit application, a plot plan, and $150 application fee. Before doing any more work, Betsey Kipp, Environmental Health Officer, will need to do a site visit. We normally design the septic system as part of the application fee. In this case, you have had someone else design a system for you, and Betsey will determine whether the proposed system complies with county regulations. If you have additional questions, please feel free to call me or Betsey. Thank you. Sincerely, Lee E.
