The system was designed by our firm under our Job No. 4788, dated November 26, 1993. The installation of the system was observed by Robert Nelson. The system included the installation of 4400 square feet of disposal field in 6 :sections. One 1000 gallon two compartment precast concrete septic tanks were installed with a dosing siphon. The components of the OSDS were installed in general conformance with the plans and specifications. The field installation generally conformed to the plans, although the sections of field were further apart than indicated on the design. The design is based on a review of plans and subsurface conditions inves- tigated by Nelson Environmental & Wastewater Solutions, Ltd. dated August 11, 1993. SITE CONDITIONS - The investigated site is a 3.4 acre lot located in a developincr rural subdivision of Pitkin County, Colorado as indicated on Fig. 1. At the time of our design a single family residence was proposed in the south central portion of the lot. The slope at the proposed field is 25% to the north. The site was vacant at the time of our design. The site has a sparse cover of native grass and with a moderate cover of sage brush in the proposed disposal field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - The location of the proposed residence and disposal field are presented on Fig. 1. The sewage load for a 2 bed- room dwelling is 300 gallons per day (GPD), 450 GPD with a 1.5 safety factor. This loading includes a garbage grinder and washing machines. Water will be provided by the Snowmass Water and Sanitation District. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - Subsurface conditions were investigated by Nelson Environmental & Wastewater Solutions, Ltd. by excavating one profile pit and 3 percolation holes in the locations indicated on Fig. 1. Subsurface conditions consisted of 3 feet of stiff sandy clay un- derlain by weathered claystone. No free water was encountered. Per- colation test results indicate an average rate in excess of 300 min- utes per inch (MPI). If during the spring, additional percolation tests can be done at 12 to 24 inches and result in improved percola- tion rates, we can decrease the size of the field. RECOMMENDATIONS - We recommend a low pressure shallow trench OSDS be installed in the natural soils. We recommend the OSDS be designed based on a percolation rate of 300+ MPI, which is an application rate of 0.15 gallons/square-foot/day (GAL/SF/DAY). This application rate utilizes slow rate soil absorption. The OSDS should be designed for 2 a sewage lo -d of 300 GPD. A low pressure shallow trench disposal sys- tem design ased on an application rate of 0.15 GAL/SF/DAY and a sew- age load of 300 GPD is presented on Figs. 1 - 4. In lieu of a pump, a dosing siphon can be installed as long as the siphon will deliver a minimum of 200 gallons per dose. As indicated on Fig. 1, the field has an area lI of 4400 square feet (SF) in 6 sections. The dispersal re t#� lines abe installed at the outsides of backhoe trenches. The trenches must be level with each of the 6 sections. We recommend 1 of the sections be closed at a time, and the closure be rotated on a six month basis to allow periodic drying of each section of field. If during the spring, shallow percolation tests can be performed at depths of 1.2 to 24 inches and indicate an improved percolation rate, we may be able to reduce the size of the field. If the owner is anticipating finishing of additional bedrooms in un- finished areas, we recommend the OSDS be constructed to handle the ad- ditional loading. The installation of a properly sized OSDS to serve future buildout can be cost effective. The proposed septic tank con- figuration will serve up to a 5 bedroom residence. For greater than 5 bedrooms, either or both of the septic tanks can be upsized to 1250 gallons to accommodate to 7 bedrooms. Each additional bedroom would require an additional 2200 SF of disposal field. We recommend the surface of the disposal field be seeded after instal- lation of the low pressure shallow trench system. We recommend using a seed mix :such as a "Foothills, Pasture, or Prairie" mixes available at local seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and devel- op a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the disposal field. The owner must realize an OSDS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume the responsibility for mainte- nance of the system. The system is relatively maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic tanks pumped. We recommend the trash chambers (1st tank) be pumped at the end of the 1st year of use to monitor sludge buildup and every 2 years afterwards. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable material down the OSDS. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet will use in excess of 1000 GPD if allowed to run. An excess 1000 GPD will irreparably harm the system. We caution you against installation of a water softener. The hydrau- lic loading from the backwash of a water softener is detrimental to OSDS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a water softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the disposal field, which will reduce performance of the disposal field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced into the OSDS. LIMITATIONS - A low pressure shallow trench design requires installa- tion by a contractor who is experienced or has close supervision dur- ing installation. Our layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the affect of the changes on the proposed sewage disposal system. We conducted this study in accordance with Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations on Individual Sewage Disposal Systems. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The residence is to be a two bedroom, three and 1/2 bathroom two-story house. Site Conditions: The property is approximately 2.8 acres in size. The drinking water is to be provided from the subdivision water system through Snowmass Water and Sanitation District. The building site is on a lot located in the Brush Creek Village Subdivision. About 50% of the lot is covered with oak brush, sagebrush and grasses. The southern part of the lot is sparsely vegetated meadow. The ground surface, which appears natural throughout the proposed area of building and within the site of the septic system field, slopes to the North at a 25% grade. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit, within 40 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated to a depth of approximately eight feet. No groundwater was encountered and bedrock was not present within eight feet of the surface of the ground. There was some siltstone rock intermixed with the soil matrix from four feet to eight feet, with diameters ranging from six -inches closer to the surface to two or three feet in the deeper portions of the profile pit excavation. The soil profile can be characterized as approximately 18 inches of silty topsoil, 32 inches of sandy clay, and 46 inches of blocky, hard, brownish clay with claystone rock fragments and some sand. The test holes were excavated by hand in the bottom of the profile pit. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run, consisted of clay. These clays were well consolidated, and showed a tendency to swell. The rates measured exceeded 300 minutes per inch. This soil is not considered acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system. We refer you to Schmeuser, Gordon, Meyer Engineering to develop a site-specific design to address these soil conditions. Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. The system was designed by our firm under our Job No. 4788, dated November 26, 1993. The installation of the system was observed by Robert Nelson. The system included the installation of 4400 square feet of disposal field in 6 sections. One 1000 gallon two compartment precast concrete septic tanks were installed with a dosing siphon. The components of the OSDS were installed in general conformance with the plans and specifications. The field installation generally conformed to the plans, although the sections of field were further apart than indicated on the design. The design is based on a review of plans and subsurface conditions inves- tigated by Nelson Environmental & Wastewater Solutions, Ltd. dated August 11, 1993. SITE CONDITIONS - The investigated site is a 3.4 acre lot located in a developing rural subdivision of Pitkin County, Colorado as indicated on Fig. 1. At the time of our design a single family residence was proposed in the south central portion of the lot. The slope at the proposed field is 25% to the north. The site was vacant at the time of our design. The site has a sparse cover of native grass and with a moderate cover of sage brush in the proposed disposal field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - The location of the proposed residence and disposal field are presented on Fig. 1. The sewage load for a 2 bed- room dwelling is 300 gallons per day (GPD), 450 GPD with a 1.5 safety factor. This loading includes a garbage grinder and washing machines Water will be provided by the Snowmass Water and Sanitation District. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - Subsurface conditions were investigated by Nelson Environmental & Wastewater Solutions, Ltd. by excavating one profile pit and 3 percolation holes in the locations indicated on Fig. 1. Subsurface conditions consisted of 3 feet of stiff sandy clay un- derlain by weathered claystone. No free water was encountered. Per- colation test results indicate an average rate in excess of 300 min- utes per inch (MPI). If during the spring, additional percolation tests can be done at 12 to 24 inches and result in improved percola- tion rates, we can decrease the size of the field. RECOMMENDATIONS - We recommend a low pressure shallow trench OSDS be installed in the natural soils. We recommend the OSDS be designed based on a percolation rate of 300-+ MPI, which is an application rate of 0.15 gallons/square-foot/day (GAL/SF/DAY). This application rate utilizes slow rate soil absorption. The OSDS should be designed for 0 a _se__wage load of 300 GPD. A low pressure shallow trench disposal sys- tem -design --based on an application rate of 0.15 GAL/SF/DAY and a sew- age load of 300 GPD is presented on Figs. 1 - 4. In lieu of a pump, a dosing siphon can be installed as long as the siphon will deliver a minimum of 200 gallons per dose. As indicated on Fig. 1, the field has an area of 4400 square feet (SF) in 6 sections. The dispersal lines are to be installed at the outsides of backhoe trenches. The trenches must be level with each of the 6 sections. We recommend 1 of the sections be closed at a time, and the closure be rotated on a six month basis to allow periodic drying of each section of field. If during the spring, shallow percolation tests can be performed at depths of 12 to 24 inches and indicate an improved percolation rate, we may be able to reduce the size of the field. If the owner is anticipating finishing of additional bedrooms in un- finished areas, we recommend the OSDS be constructed to handle the ad- ditional loading. The installation of a properly sized OSDS to serve future buildout can be cost effective. The proposed septic tank con- figuration will serve up to a 5 bedroom residence. For greater than 5 bedrooms, either or both of the septic tanks can be upsized to 1250 gallons to accommodate to 7 bedrooms. Each additional bedroom would require an additional 2200 SF of disposal field. We recommend the surface of the disposal field be seeded after instal- lation of t:ae low pressure shallow trench system. We recommend using a seed mix :such as a "Foothills, Pasture, or Prairie" mixes available at local seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and devel- op a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the disposal field. The owner must realize an OSDS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume the responsibility for mainte- nance of the system. The system is relatively maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic tanks pumped. We recommend the trash chambers (1st tank) be pumped at the end of the 1st year of use to monitor sludge buildup and every 2 years afterwards. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable material dawn the OSDS. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed. to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet will use in excess of 1000 GPD if allowed to run. An excess 1000 GPD will irreparably harm the system. We caution you against installation of a water softener. The hydrau- lic loading from the backwash of a water softener is detrimental to OSDS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a water softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the disposal field, which will reduce performance of the disposal field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced into the OSDS. LIMITATION; - A low pressure shallow trench design requires installa- tion by a contractor who is experienced or has close supervision dur- ing installation. Our layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluatE! the affect of the changes on the proposed sewage disposal system.
