HEA' Ii A%ppN / PITKIN As requested by Nancy MacKenzie of the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD), we visited the subject site on April 19, 1999 to evaluate a profile pit to confirm our onsite wastewater system (OWS) design for the proposed residence. Subsurface conditions were investigated by Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical Inc. and reported under their Job No. 198256, Dated September 11, 1998. The lot is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The proposed drain field area has a moderate slope of 14% to 18%. There is a moderate cover of grasses and scrub oak in the proposed field area. The test pit was excavated to approximately 8 feet and had 6 inches of sandy topsoil underlain to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet by clayey, silty, gravelly sand. Subsurface conditions were investigated by Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical Inc. and reported under their Job No. 198256, Dated September 11, 1998. SITE CONDITIONS - The lot is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The proposed drain field area has a moderate slope of 14% to 18%. There is a moderate cover of grasses and scrub oak in the proposed field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - A five -bedroom residence greater than 6000 square feet (SF) in area and is proposed at the location presented in Figure 1. The average sewage loading for a five -bedroom residence is 1300 gallons per day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) Q loading of 130 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 2275 GPD. This loading includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder, and washing machine. The residence will be served by city water. A pool is proposed at the southwest corner of the residence, which should be located 25+ feet from the drain field. SUBSURFACE CONDPTIONS - A subsurface investi ation was erformed b He worth-Pawlak g P y p Geotechnical, Inc. by digging 4 percolation holes, 26 to 30 inches deep at the locations indicated on Figure 1. A profile boring was not drilled in the septic area because clearing would have been required for the drill rig access. Subsurface conditions encountered were similar to the foundation test borings. Subsurface conditions consisted of 1 foot of topsoil underlain by clayey, silty sand. No ground water was encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 20 to 24 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 22 MPI. A profile hole will need to be excavated. The test pit should be excavated prior to the APEHD visiting the site. We should also observe the test pit. RECOMMENDATIONS - We recommend the installation of two septic tanks, a pump, and 4 chamber - bed OWS be installed at the locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1300 GPD and a percolation rate of 22 MPI. The proposed OWS is not oversized for section rotation and should not be done. We recommend the installation of four chamber -beds, each with 2 rows of 14 chambers. A pump is required to distribute the effluent through the field to increase the efficiency of the field. We recommend a distribution box with flow equalizers be installed to distribute effluent between beds. We recommend a pump with 25 gallons per minute flow rate and 14.6 feet of head be installed. The floats should be set to pump 250 gallons. Pump details are presented as Figure 3. if additional bedrooms in unfinished areas are possible, we recommend the OWS be constructed to serve the additional loading. This OWS design will serve a five -bedroom residence greater than 6000 SF. For greater than five -bedrooms, the septic tank can be upsized 568 gallons for each additional bedroom. Each additional bedroom would require an additional 388 SF of field or 25 gravelless chambers. We recommend the surface of the field be seeded after installation of the fields. We recommend using a native seed mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. No landscaping or plastic can be installed over the fields, which will reduce performance of the fields. Livestock should not be confined in the field areas. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE - The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service, and must assume the responsibility for maintenance of the OWS. The system is relatively mainte- nance free, but the owner must have the septic tanks pumped. We recommend the septic tank be pumped and the effluent filter be cleaned or "hosed off' every two years. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable material into the OWS. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can consume in excess of 1000 GPD. A loading of 1000 GPD could flood and irreparably harm the OWS. We caution against installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a water softener may be detrimental to OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS - An OWS design requires installation by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank constriction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The system was designed under our Job No. 10708, dated February 19, 1999. The system includes the installation of two 2000 -gallon, single -compartment, precast concrete septic tanks, with an effluent filter on the outlet of the first tank, and a pump in the second tank, and four two - chamber wide, by fourteen -chamber long beds, for a total infiltrative area of 1736 square feet (SF). An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The pump, alarm, and effluent filter were in place and wired at the time of our site visit. Doug Hayes with K. C. PERCOLATION TESTING Preliminary percolation tests were conducted on August 27, 1998 to evaluate the feasibility of an infiltration septic disposal system at the site. Four percolation holes were dug at the locations shown on Fig. 1. The test holes were hand dug 26 to 30 inches deep and nominal 12 inches diameter, and were soaked with water one day prior to testing. The soils exposed in the percolation holes are similar to those encountered in the borings shown on Fig. 2 and consist of silty sand and clay. A profile boring was not drilled in the septic disposal area because clearing would have been required for the drill rig access. The percolation test results are presented in Table II. Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the test area should be suitable for a conventional infiltration septic disposal system. When the location of the proposed septic disposal system has been determined, we should perform site specific percolation testing, including a profile hole to a depth of at least 4 feet below the septic field depth. LIMITATIONS This study has been conducted in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practices in this area at this time. We make no warranty either expressed or implied. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon the data obtained from the exploratory borings drilled at the locations indicated on Fig. 1, the proposed type of construction and our experience in the area. Our findings include interpolation and extrapolation of the subsurface conditions identified at the exploratory borings and variations in the subsurface conditions may not become evident until excavation is performed. If conditions encountered during construction appear different from those described in this report, we should be notified so that re-evaluation of the recommendations may be made.
