ENGINEERS & GEOLOGISTS May 31, 2001 Mr. and Mrs. Michael Woodrow Starwood Lot R-34 LLC. Box T-3 Aspen, Colorado 81612 Subject: OWS Design, Proposed Woodrow Residence Lot R-34, Starwood Village Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 13780W W. Woodrow, As requested, we have reviewed subsurface conditions prepared by HP Geotech and designed an onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the proposed residence. HP Geotech performed their investigation on October 26, 2000. SITE CONDITIONS - The lot is located in a residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The proposed drain field has a 20%-23% slope to the southeast. There is a moderate cover of native grasses and scrub oak in the proposed field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - A five -bedroom residence having 5750 square feet (SF) and an attached caretaker unit are proposed at the location presented on Figure 1. We are sizing the OWS based on 6 bedrooms and 1200 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The average daily sewage loading is 1200 GPD and the design loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 2100 GPD. The loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. The residence will be served water by the local water district. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS — HP Geotech performed a subsurface investigation by digging one profile pit and three percolation holes, as indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface materials consisted of 1 foot of topsoil, underlain by relatively dense silty to clayey sand and gravel with cobbles and boulders to the maxi- mum depth explored of feet. No ground water was encountered. The percolation test performed indicated percolation rates of 30 to 60 minutes per inch (MPI) with an average percolation rate of 50 MPI. Percola- tion data is presented in Appendix A. RECOMMENDATIONS — The installation must include two septic tanks, dual alternating pumps, an automatic distributing valve, and three pressurized chamber -beds, as presented on Figure 1. The OWS is based on an average sewage load of 1200 GPD and a percolation rate of 50 MPI. One 2000 -gallon single -compartment concrete septic tank, one 100201199two—compartment Errecast concrete septic tank with a dual effluent pumping system in a Biotube vault, and three chamber -beds with a total of 140 chambers must be installed, as indicated on Figure 1. Beds `A' must have three rows of 14 chambers, and bed `B' must have four rows of 14 chambers. Holes should be facing upward, with every fifth hole facing downward. Two alternating distributing valves must be installed to distribute effluent evenly. The pumps must be capable of discharging 39.2 gallons per minute with a total dynamic head of 36.4 feet. Pump details are presented as Figures 3 and 4. An alternative tank location is displayed on Figure 1. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of infiltrators. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix available at seed stores should be placed after final grading. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE - The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the OWS. In the absence of a monitoring program, we recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. EfIluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned at pumping. There are daily considerations su65as not put- ting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the OWS. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener(s) may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIlMTATIONS A contractor, who is experienced in its installation, should install the OWS. Our investi- gation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the pro- posed OWS. If the health department modifies the design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements. If there are questions or if we can be of fizrther service, please call. One profile pit and three percolation holes were dug at the locations shown on Fig. 1. The test holes (nominal 12 inch diameter by 12 inch deep) were hand dug at she bottom of shallow backhoe pits and were soaked with water one day prior to testing. The soils exposed in the percolation holes are similar to those exposed in the Profile Pit shown on Fig. 2 and consist of about 1 foot of topsoil overlying relatively dense silty to clayey sand and gravel with cobbles and boulders to the pit depth of 8 feet. The percolation test results are presented in Table I. The percolation test results indicate an infiltration rate between about 30 and 60 minutes per inch with an average of SO minutes per inch. Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the test area should be suitable for a conventional infiltration septic disposal system. We recommend the infiltration area be oversized due to the relatively slow percolation rate. LIMITATIONS This study has been conducted in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practices in this area at this time. We make no warranty either expressed or implied. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are.based upon the data obtained from the exploratory pits excavated at the locations indicated on Fig. 1, the assumed type of construction and our experience,in the area. Our findings include interpolation and extrapolation of the subsurface conditions identified at the exploratory pits and variations in the subsurface conditions may not become evident until excavation is performed. If conditions encountered during construction appear different from those described in this report, we should be notified so that re-evaluation of the recommendations may be trade. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use by our client for design purposes. We are not responsible for technical interpretations by others of our information.. As the project evolves, we should provide continued consultation and field H -P GEOTECH r 0 services during construction to review and monitor the implementation of our recoinmendations, and to verify that the recommendations have been appropriately interpreted. Significant design changes may require additional analysis or modifications to the recommendations presented herein. We recommend on-site observation of excavations and foundation bearing strata aWd testing of structural fill by a representative of the geotechnical engineer.
