The upper six feet of clay appears to be highly expansive. The proposed residence can be founded with spread footings bearing on the natural subsoils, below all topsoil, and below the upper six feet of highly expansive clay, designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 3000 psf. Due to the swell potential of the subsoils, the footings should also be designed to impose a minimm dead load pressure of 800 psf. Other design and construction criteria relating to geotechnical aspects of the site are presented in the body of the report. This report presents the results of a subsoil study for a proposed residence to be located on Lot 10, owl Creek Ranch Subdivision, Pitkin County, Colorado. The project site is shown on Fig. 1. The purpose of the study was to develop recommendations for foundation design. The study was conducted in accordance with our proposal for geotechnical engineering study to The Aspen Design Group, dated January 23, 1991. A field exploration program consisting of exploratory borings was conducted to obtain information on subsurface conditions. Samples obtained during the field exploration were tested in the laboratory to determine compressibility or swell characteristics and classification of the on-site soils. The results of the field exploration and laboratory testing were analyzed to develop recommendations for foundation types, depths and allowable pressures for the proposed building foundation. The results of the field exploration and laboratory testing are presented in the report. This report has been prepared to summarize the data obtained during this study and to present our conclusions and recommendations based on the proposed Chen ONorthern, I ne. Consulting Engineers and Scientists r . r construction and the subsoil conditions encountered. Design parameters and a discussion of geotectuucal engineering considerations related to construction of the residence are included in the report. ..,• IX -11 rb••l • The proposed 12,000 square foot building location is shown on Fig. 1. The residence will be a two story wood frame structure with an attached garage on the north side and an attached caretaker residence on the east side. Ground floors are proposed to be slab -on -grade. We assume excavation for the building will have a maximum cut depth of one level, about 10 feet below the existing ground surface. Foundation loadings for the structure are assumed to be relatively light and typical of the proposed construction type. If building loadings, location or grading plans are significantly different from those described above, we should be notified to reevaluate the recoamnendations contained in this report. R)NoV Mid ►u SIM h:'. The proposed building area consists of an open meadow with an existing fence and tree line to the south. The site slopes down to the southeast at grades of 10 to 15 percent. steeper slopes were observed to the south of the tree line beyond the building area. The site was covered with about 3 feet of snow at the time of our field work. Chen@Northern, Inc ConsullingEngineers andScienlrsls /'la e .fa2 0 .
