It approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is 57000. The basic fee of $330 is due at tine time of application. The remainder, d any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit: second, before final approval of the ISDS permit. The soils test and system design must be done by a Registered Professional Engineer. You should plan to meet with the RPE at your site to discuss where the soils tests should be done to meet all of the County regulations and where you want to put your house. The RPE will be your contact for issues you want to discuss about your system's size and location. The system was designed under our Job No. 11454, dated October 4, 1999. The system includes the installation of a 2500 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet and two fourteen -chamber long trenches, for a total infiltrative area of 434 square feet (SF). The sewer line from the proposed addition to the existing sewer line will be installed in the spring of 2000; our office should be contacted upon completion. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with the plans and specifications. The residence is being upgraded to a five -bedroom house. SITE CONDITIONS The property is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 20% slope to the north and a good cover of native grass. The residence is served water by the local water district. The existing OWS for the residence consists of a 1250 -gallon septic tank and 1328 square feet (SF) of drain field. The existing tank has deteriorated and will need to be replaced. Test pits were excavated in the existing drain field and conditions were observed by Aspen Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) personnel. The field was found to be in good condition and suitable for use as a part of the upgraded OWS. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The upgraded residence will have between 2000 and 6000 square feet (SF). There will be a change from 4 bedrooms to a 5 -bedroom structure. The upgraded OWS will be based on 5 bedrooms and 100 gallons per day (GPD) using the APEHD loading criteria. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1750 GPD. This loading includes a dishwasher and garbage grinder. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The subsurface investigation included the digging of one 8 -foot profile pit and five percolation holes, as indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions at the profile pit consist of 1.5 feet of sandy clay topsoil, underlain to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet by very stiff sandy clay. The percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 17 to 40 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 30 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table 1. RECOMMENDATIONS We recommend the installation of a septic tank and two chamber -type drain field trenches installed at the locations presented on Figure 1 to expand the existing OWS. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1750 GPD and a percolation rate of 30 MPI. We recommend the installation of one 2500 - gallon single -compartment, pre -cast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet to replace the existing septic tank. The existing tank is not suitable for further use due to its degrading condition. A distri- bution box should be installed as indicated on Figure 1 to distribute effluent to the existing field and propos- ed trenches. Two line from the distribution box should reconnect and discharge to the existing field, while one line will direct flow to the new trenches. Using APEHD sizing criteria, the addition of 1 bedroom to the residence would require 268 SF of additional drain field, when using a loading of 100 GPD. The total area required for 1750 GPD and a percolation rate of 30 MPI is 1917 SF. The total required area, 1917 SF, less the existing area, 1328 SF, equals 589 SF. A 301/6 area reduction yields 412 SF of required chamber drain field. We recommend installation of 412 SF of chamber trench for the upgraded field. The existing 1328 SF drain field will be used in conjunction with the proposed new trenches. Two gravelless trenches with chambers should be installed, each having 1 row of 14 chambers. Vehicle movement over the drain field trenches during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. We recommend the bottom of the bed be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel. We recommend the surface of the field be seeded after installation of the fields. We recommend using a native seed mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, we recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash -waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to our design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the OWS.
