This inspection was performed as a follow-up to another inspection which was initially conducted on April 21, 2014. The permit and record drawing was provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID #2645-031-00-002). The subject OWTS consists of one 1000 -gallon, two-compartment concrete septic tank and an 18' x 50' pipe and gravel soil treatment area (STA). Conditions of the OWTS were similar to those observed on April 21, 2014. Risers had been installed on the septic tank lids, brining access to within 2 -inches of grade (sod layer). At the time of the inspection, the septic tank was slightly over -full and slow draining. We speculate this condition is being caused by either 1) accumulation of sludge in the line from the septic tank to the STA, or 2) saturation of the STA. We recommend the line from the tank to the STA be jetted. During the jetting process, we will be able to determine the following: • If there was sludge accumulation in the line, and removal of sludge; and • Approximate location of manifold at the start of the STA; and • If the STA is currently saturated. At the time of the inspection, there was no evidence of surface saturation over the STA; however, using Pitkin County's drawings, we approximate the end of the STA to extend beyond the fence into the horse corral. There appears to be a shallow ditch that runs over the western corner of the STA, connecting the pond to a culvert. This may be causing some issues with the STA. We recommend, as noted in our April 21, 2014 report, eliminating horse traffic over this area and re- routing or lining the ditch to minimize additional water infiltration over the STA. Additional recommendations are listed below. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. Recommendations: • Clean or replace cast iron pipe from house to septic tank. This filter must be cleaned annually, or as needed. • Eliminate horse traffic over STA. • Re-route, line or culvert shallow ditch over STA to minimize additional water infiltration into STA. Don't: • Pour cooking grease or oil down the sink or toilet. • Rinse coffee grounds into the sink. • Pour household chemicals down the sink or flush them. Don't: • Flush non -degradable products or chemicals, such as feminine hygiene products, condoms, dental floss, diapers, cigarette butts, cat litter, paper towels, pharmaceuticals. Don't: • Park or drive on your dra infield. The weight can damage the drain lines. • Plant trees or shrubs too close to your drainfield, roots can grow into your system and clog it. Don't StrainYbUf Don't • Concentrate your water use by using your dishwasher, shower, washing machine, and toilet at the same time. All that extra water can really strain your septic system. Do: • Eliminate or limit the use of a garbage disposal. • Properly dispose of coffee grounds & food. • Put grease in a container to harden before discarding in the trash. Do: • Dispose of these items in the trash can! Do: • Consult a septic service professional to advise you of the proper distance for planting trees and shrubs, depending on your septic tank location. Do: • Stagger the use of water -generating appliances. This can be helpful especially if your system has not been pumped in a long time. • Become more water efficient by fixing plumbing leaks and consider installing bathroom and kitchen faucet aerators and water -efficient products. dtf1%fN C401 NT Pitkin County Environmental I Ath Department Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) USE PERMIT CHECKLIST Permit for Continued Use of an Existing OWTS 76 Service Center Rd - Aspen, CO • 81611 Phone: 970.920.5070 Fax: 970.920.5374 Website: www.aspenpitkin.com/ehnr Some items listed on this checklist may already exist in the Department files.
