Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications dated April 30, 2003. Any
changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer prior to them being made.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin
County ISDS regulations. There must be a minimum 152 foot setback from the septic system to any ditches on the
property.
This system wilfconsist of one 2000 gallon single compartment tank followed by one 1000 gallon two-compartment
tank. A flow splitter basin will distribute the effluent to 3 fields. Bed "A" will have 3 row of 14 (42), bed "B" will have
4 rows of 11 (44), and bed "C" will have 6 rows of 6 (36) for a total of 122 chambers. In order to achieve
proportional distribution to each bed, flow levelers should be used. The engineer must check flow percentages.
This department does not endorse any brand of products. This permit must be kept on-site during installation.
The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This
department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice.

The fee for a ISDS applcation is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of $65 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $ 1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit'. second, before
final approval of the ISDS permit_
Applicationfor an individual sewage disposal system is hereby submitted. I hereby certify that the above information is true and
accurate and that I have provided true and accurate information on locations of all existing and proposed wells, contour
intervals, buildings, property lines, ditches, slopes, waterlines, springs, suction or irrigation lines, drinking water cisterns, drain
tiles, irrigation ditches, lakes, water courses, streams, floodplains, dry gulches, and existing septic systems. I hereby certify
that any such features riot shown on attached site map are not present. Issuance of the permit does not imply the approval of
any other permit required for construction pursuant to Pitkin County codes. No construction may be undertaken until all
approvals and permits have been obtained.
The Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department, Pitkin County and employees of these agencies will be held harmless
should the individual sewage disposal system fail or malfur
joon. The permit to construct is issued on information submitted by

As requested, we observed the installation of the onsite wastewater system for the subject site on June 22,
and July 6, 2004. The system was designed under our Job No. 15557W, dated May 1, 2003.
The system includes the installation of a 2000 -gallon, single -compartment, concrete septic tank followed
by a 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet, and three
gravelless chamber -beds. One bed has three rows of 14 chambers each, one bed has 4 rows of 11
chambers each, and one bed has six rows of six chambers each for a total of 122 chambers and 1891 ftz of
infiltrative area. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1.
The observed components of the OWS were installed in general conformance with our design. A licensed
electrician must make final electrical connections. Our installation observations do not imply a guarantee
or warranty of materials or workmanship.

who designed the individual sewage disposal system for the fore mentioned property.
The "As Built" letter should confirm that they observed the installation of the system as designed
and any changes in the system must be noted in the letter or by a new set of plans. Without this,
we have been unable to complete the processing of this permit.
Therefore, we regret to inform you that a copy of this letter will be attached to the property deed
indicating that there is an open issue with the property unless the "As Built" letter is received by

As requested, we have evaluated the proposed change to the building envelope to accommodate a new
location for the drain field. It is our understanding that the building envelope will be extended to the west as

No changes to the drain field sizing have been
proposed, and the drain field will not encroach on any known setbacks. Therefore, it has been determined

As requested, we have evaluated subsurface conditions at the subject site and designed an onsite waste-
water system (OWS) for the proposed residence. H.P. Geotech performed a subsurface investigation on
November 19, 1999. Our firm investigated subsurface conditions on April 23, 2003,
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed
drain field area :has an 8% slope to the southwest, and has a moderate cover of native grasses and
sagebrush. The residence will be served water by a community well.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
The proposed residence will have five bedrooms and a living area of 6400 square feet (SF). The OWS
was based on 5 bedrooms and 1300 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Pitkin County Environmental
Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 130 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a
peak factor of 1.75 is 2275 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and a garbage grinder.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
Subsurface investigations were performed by digging two profile pits and six percolation holes, 15 to 25
inches deep, at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface materials reported by HP Geotech in Test Pit
1 consisted of 2 -feet of silty, sandy, clay topsoil, underlain by silty, sandy clay to the maximum depth
explored of 8.5 feet. Subsurface materials encountered in Test Pit 2 consisted of 1 foot of silty, sandy, clay
topsoil, underlain by silty, sandy clay to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. Ground water was not
encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 20 minutes per inch (MPI) to 40 MPI. The
average percolation rate is 35 MPI. Percolation test data is included in Table 1 and Appendix A.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The proposed OWS includes the installation of two septic tanks, an eluent filter, and three gravelless
chamber -beds, at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load
of 1300 GPD and a percolation rate of 35 MPI. The installation must include one 2000 -gallon, single
compartment, precast concrete septic tank followed by one 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast
concrete septic tank with an eluent filter on the outlet. Three gravelless chamber -beds must be installed.
Bed `A' must have 3 rows of 14 chambers each, bed `B' must have 4 rows of 11 chambers each, and bed
`C' must have 6 rows of 6 chambers each for a total of 122 chambers. A flow splitter basin with speed
levelers is required to distribute eluent to the beds. The only acceptable alternative to a flow splitter basin
will be a watertight distribution box, which has an access at the surface.
Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to
minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick,
shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers.
The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at
the drain field to re -vegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and may develop a growth
10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the field.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of,
and assume responsibility for, ongoing maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring pro-
gram, the septic tank should be pumped every two years or more frequently if needed. Eluent filter
and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping or as needed. There are daily
considerations such as not putting plastic or other non -biodegradable materials into the septic system.
Garbage disposal use should be minimized to reduce the frequency of pumping. Water use must be
monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running
toilet can use in excess of 1000 GPD. An additional 1000 GPD loading may flood and irreparably
harm the system.
We caution against the installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a
water softener �.s detrimental to an OWS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the
backwash waste., if a softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the field, which
will reduce performance of the field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should
not be introduced to the OWS. The design of the OWS is based on the treatment of domestic sewage
only. No industrial or hazardous wastes should be introduced into the OWS.
LIMITATIONS
A contractor who is experienced in its installation must install an OWS design. Our investigation, layout,
design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those
described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed
OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the
performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS

All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of

PERCOLATION TESTLNG
P.-rcolatioa tests were conducted on September 2S, 1999 to evaluate the
feasibility of an infiltration septic disposal system at the site. Two profile pits and six
percolation holes were dug at rhe locations shown on Fig. 1. The test holes (no+minal 12
inch diameter by 12 inch' deep) were hand dug at the bottom of shallow backhoe pins
and were ;soaked with water oris day prior to testing, The soils exposed in the
percolation holes are similar to those exposed in Pits 1 and I shown on. Fig. 2 and
consist of silty sandy clay below about 2 feet of topsoil. The percolation test results are
presented in Table II_ Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the
percolation test results, the tested areas should be suitable for a conventional infIrration
septic disposal system, The system should be kept relatively shallow and oversized due,
to rhe clay soils, A civil engineer should design the infiltration septic disposal s)�! tem.

This study has been conducted in accorda4e with generally accepted
geotec'tinic:al engineering principles and practices in'this area az this time. We make no
warranty rimer expressed or implied. The conclusions and recommendations submitted
in this repot are based upon the data obtained from the exploratory borings and pits
located a shown on Fig, 1, the assumed type of construction and our experience in the
area. Our findings include in potation and exuapohA ibn of the subsurface conditions
