O. Box 534 Aspen, Colorado 81612 n (!PE -11-7 JUN 12 1996 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ASPEN / PITKEN RE: The Proposed Engering Residence located on Lot 8, Holland Hills Subdivision, Pitkin County, Colorado, Dear Yvo, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests to evaluate the referenced site for a septic system for the proposed house. We conducted this study in accordance with Article 5 of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulation. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at our earliest opportunity in order for you to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction and Building Site: The building lot is in the Holland Hills Subdivision, and is approximately 1.68 acres in size, fronting onto State Highway 82. As we understand, the residence planned is a four bedroom and three and one-half bathroom house with an unfinished basement and approximately 2800 square feet of finished living area. The house site is located in a meadow with a gently rolling topography, sloping at less than a 10% grade toward Highway 82 and the Roaring Fork River. Typical of undeveloped lots in this area, the vegetation pattern of alfalfa, hay, native grasses and weeds covered the property. There are piles of fill along the Southwest property fine and fence. A driveway was pioneered and staked to the house site. Water to the residence is to be supplied from a series of subdivision wells, the closest of which sits behind the structure on lot 13. This well is located a sufficient distance from obvious sources of contamination, such as the proposed septic system location. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile, 15 feet to the Northeast of the proposed absorption area and just uphill, was excavated to a depth of nine and three-quarter feet. The excavation revealed that there was no groundwater apparent or bedrock present within nine feet of the surface of the ground. There was some soil compaction from the pressure of the excavating equipment evident in the profile and percolation test holes. The soils consisted of a surface layer of reddish brown fine sandy loam about 5 inches thick. The subsoil was a red fine sandy loam of uniform consistency. P.O. APPROVED FOR ISSUE BY: SYSTEM INSTALLED BY: DATE OF FINAL INSPECTION REQUEST: FINAL INSPECTION BY: Printed on Recycled Paper DATE: DATE: W Engering Residence Soils Investigation and Percolation Tests Lot 8, Holland Hills June 11, 1996 Page 2 The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. After excavating through the piles of fill, the test holes were excavated at the bottom of shallow, four -foot backhoe pits by hand. Before the test, the sidewalls were scrapped and gravel was placed in the test holes to prevent scouring the soils off the sidewalls of the percolation test holes when water was added. Percolation Test: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area Southwest of the stakes demarking the proposed residence. This testing was performed in three shallow holes excavated to a total depth of between fifty four and sixty inches. An initial filling of the percolation test holes was done by adding approximately 10 gallons of water to each hole the evening before the percolation test was actually conducted. The percolation holes were then further pre-soaked by adding water to refill the test holes to a depth of fourteen inches four times during the eight hour period before beginning the percolation test. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy loam soil has an average percolation rate of 13 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate our recommendations. We hope that this investigation is sufficient for your needs. If you have any further questions regarding this letter or if we may provide additional assistance, please call. Sincerely, Robert F. Nelson, R.E.H. S. President Reviewed By: "444- ay ammond, P.E.
