Effluent will be pumped to the fist chamber of a 1500 gallon 2 -compartment tank. This 1500 gallon tank will also serve the proposed 4 -bedroom residence and sewage will flow via gravity from the house to the tank. Effluent will then be pumped from the 1500 gallon tank to a distribution box and then to a split bed soil treatment area. Each bed will consist of 24 Eljen modules over 6" of sand. The beds will be installed 6" below grade and cover will be mounded over the top in a berm configuration. The depth of the cover shall not exceed 3 feet. Vegetation on the berm shall no consist of plants and bushes with "tap" roots and must be approved by Pitkin County Community Development staff. A representative from Pitkin County Community Development shall inspect the berm after vegetation planting has been completed to ensure compliance. The existing well must be abandoned and records of the well abandonment shall be submitted to this department prior to final approval. Any well must be a minimum of 53 feet from the OWTS tanks and 128 feet to the soil treatment area. The soil treatment area shall be a minimum of 10 feet to the property line. This Permit must be kept on-site during installation. The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an "as -built" letter to this Department within 30 days of the final inspection, unless a longer period of time has been agreed upon, in writing. This Department must also be called for the final inspection with a minimum of 48 hours notice. Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the requirements of the Pitkin County OWTS Regulation. Carbon 8 Constructors, Greg Peters, installed the system. The design dated February 13, 2013, which called for the installation of a 1500 -gallon tank to serve the main house and a 1000 -gallon tank to serve the guest house, was modified and verbally approved by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department. In an effort to consolidate the tank capacity and utilize only one pump, a 2000 -gallon, two-compartment Valley Precast concrete septic tank with an Orenco® Biotube Pump Vault to serve both the main house and the guest house was installed. There is an effluent filter inside the second compartment of the septic tank. This filter must be cleaned annually, or as needed. Effluent is pumped to a distribution box, which is accessible from grade. Effluent is evenly distributed to two beds, with each bed consisting of 24 Eljen® modules per bed. Installation of the sand filter material (specification sheet attached) was slightly below native grade. A berm and landscaping will be placed over the Eljen® modules, with not more than 3' of cover and the berm slope must be at least 3:1. The berm and landscaping were not installed at the time of installation observations. Vegetation over the berm should be limited to native grasses, without tap roots, and good stabilizing characteristics. No trees or shrubs requiring regular irrigation should be planted on the berm. Pump start up was successfully conducted by Valley Precast personnel on January 29, 2104. This office did not observe the installation of the line from the main house to the septic tank, or the pump line from the tank to the distribution box. Pictures have been provided by the contractor. The control panel was installed in the mechanical room of the main house, under the stairs. The OWTS was generally installed according to specifications. This observation is not a guarantee of workmanship and/or parts and materials. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified if changes are made to the OWTS in the future. Any additional OWTS construction must be according to the county regulations. LIMITS: Observations are limited to components that are visible at the time of the inspection. The installer must have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. The property is located outside of Aspen, in an area where OWTSs and wells are necessary. SITE CONDITIONS A 2 -bedroom, single-family residence presently exists and is utilizing an existing OWTS. The existing OWTS needs to be upgraded. Future development on the property will include a 4 -bedroom residence. The system will be sized to accommodate both the 4 -bedroom main house and existing 2 - bedroom guest house. Domestic water is currently provided from a shallow well located near the center of the property. This well must be abandoned and a new well drilled outside of the minimum required setback distance from the tank and absorption area. SUBSURFACE The subsurface was investigated by digging one profile pit and three percolation holes, as indicated. The materials encountered in the profile pit consisted of 6 -inches of sandy topsoil, underlain by sandy clay to 2 -feet, underlain by sand with cobbles and gravel to a depth of 8 -feet. The cobbles were up to 2 - feet in diameter. No groundwater or bedrock was encountered. An average of 27 MPI percolation rate will be used to design the OWTS, as described in Table 1. DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS The OWTS design is sized to serve an existing 2 -bedroom residence and future 4 -bedroom residence. An average daily wastewater flow of 900 GPD will be used. The installation must include a 1000 - gallon, two-compartment septic tank with a Biotube® pump vault in the second compartment to serve the guest house. Effluent will be pumped to a 1500 -gallon, two compartment septic tank with a Biotube® pump vault in the second compartment to serve the 4 -bedroom main house. The property owner is responsible for maintaining service contracts for manufactured units, alternating absorption systems, and any other components needing maintenance. The surface of the drain field should be seeded upon completion. Vegetation is an important factor in drain field performance. Erosion control should be practiced prior to and during re -vegetation. Geo - fabrics or plastics should not be used over the drain field. No heavy equipment, machinery, or materials should be placed on backfilled drain field. Livestock should not graze on the drain field. Plumbing fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWTS. For example, a running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a drain field. The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years, or as needed gauged by measurement of solids in the tank. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non -biodegradable materials should not be placed into the OWTS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWTS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWTS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWTS. The OWTS is engineered for domestic waste only. ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES If the design includes a pump, air release valves and weep holes should be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of drain field due to the potential to compact soil.
