Box 501 Snounass, CO 81654 Dear Mr. Smith: As requested, we met with you at the subject site on May 14, 1982 to observe the subsoils exposed in excavations adjacent to the disposal system. We have received a report performed by others summarizing a subsoil study for the existing residence under construction. We understand that the intercept drain is proposed to maintain ground water level at least 4 feet below the bottom leach field level. A preliminary detail of the drain has been issued by Ponderosa Engineering, Inc. dated November 10, 1981. At the time of our site visit, the septic tank and distribution pipes within the leach field had been installed. Portions of the proposed intercept trench drain had been excavated to the north and west of t'ie disposal system. The excavation had been halted due to caving and water seepage into the trenches. The soils exposed in the excavations consisted predominantly of silty clays similar to that logged during the subsoil study performed for the residence. Free water was observed at the bottom of the existing trenches at approximate depth of 5 to 6 feet. Due to recent heavy precipitation, it could not be determined if the observed water was the ground water table. Temporary rise in ground water level reportedly occurs during times of adjacent field irrigation and ditch flow. No highly pervious or relatively impervious confining layers were logged in the exploratory holes to the maximum depth drilled, 25 feet. Installation of an intercept drain to lower the ground water level below the site should be feasible. Since no highly pervious or underlying impervious layer was encountered below the site, positive cut off of ground water flow beneath the site will not be possible. Depth of trench required to lower the OFFICES: CASPER 9 COLORADO SPRINGS • DENVER • SALT LAKE CITY ground water level beneath the system will depend mainly on the distance of the trench frcm the leach field area and seepage characteristics of the subsoils. The closer the trench drain to the system, the greater the draw down. Based on calculations for partially penetrating trenches and assumed seepage characteristics, we believe a 12 foot deep trench placed within 30 feet upslope of the leach field area should be adequate to draw down the water level 4 feet below the system. These calculations assure the ground water level gradient to be similar to the ground surface slope and the maximum stabilized ground water level to be at 5 foot depth below existing ground surface. The trench drain should consist of a perforated pipe installed near the bottom of a gravel filled trench. The gravel should extend up to near existing water level. A filter fabric should be placed in the trench prior to gravel backfilling. An impervious plastic liner can be placed on the dawn hill trench wall closest the adjacent leach field. The trench should be sloped at a minimum 1% grade to suitable gravity outlet. At least 3 feet of clay soil should cover the gravel to reduce surface infiltration. The above reccmznendations are based on our observations of the site, the subsurface information provided to us and our experience with similar construction. (b) What type of filter fabric should be used. (c) How much 'rock should be placed in the drain. (d) Any other design requirements which will be necessary to have the drain function properly. 7.
