Box 5384 Snowmass Village, CO 81615 Re: Packard Wastewater Treatment System Dear Dan: The following design for an individual on-site wastewater treatment and disposal system for a proposed four bedroom single family home on Lot 16, Block 2, Little Elk Creek Village is provided at your request. The design is based upon Pitkin County requirements and physical site conditions. We used the 1"=20' Site Plan by Alpine Surveys, Inc., dated 10/23/87, and the field percolation test data sheet by Pitkin County dated 10/20/87 for the preparation of the design. The location of the proposed house with respect to the irrigation ditch and Little Elk Creek ponds and wells will necessitate a pumped effluent system. The septic tank and soil absorption mound is located southwest of the house. The following parameters were used in the design of the system: 0 4 bedroom single family home o Design flow rate = 150 gpd/bedroom o Natural ground slope less than 5% o Percolation rate of natural ground = 11 min./inch (0.8 gpd/ft.2) o Bedrock > 4 ft. o Water table = 68 inches (assume greater than 24 inches but less than 48 inches at high water) o Minimum detention time in septic tank = 30 hours Mr. Dan Packard May 27, 1988 Page 2 The sewage effluent flow is calculated to be 600 sed on 4 bedrooms at 150 gpd/bedroom. A peak day multiplier o 1.5 as used for design purposes. % Septic Tank The septic tank shall be a prefabricated concrete or polyethylene tank with a minimum liquid capacity of 1200 gallons. The tank shall be installed in accordance with Pitkin County requirements and shall be at an elevation capable of receiving sewage flow by gravity. The approximate location of the tank is shown on the attached drawing. Dosing Tank and Pump Septic tank effluent shall enter a water tight polyethylene or concrete dosing tank with a capacity of 300 gallons, which is approximately twice the volume of the pipe laterals. A low head submersible pump rated at 35-50 gpm at 5 ft. of head, such as Hydromatic Model CW25 or equal, shall be installed in the dosing chamber. Soil Absorption Mound The soil absorption mound shall be as shown on the attached figures 7-10, 7-11 and 7-13 which are from the EPA Design Manual for On-site Wastewater Treatment & Disposal Systems. The mound shall be located on natural ground within 25 feet of the dosing chamber, approximately as shown on the drawing. Topsoil shall be plowed or raked with backhoe teeth prior to placing the mound fill. Fill material shall be medium textured sand meeting the following grada- tion: Sieve Size Percent Passing #4 100 #10 75-90 #16 35-50 #50 15-25 #200 0-10 ■ Mr. Dan Packard May 27, 1988 Page 3 Results of a gradation test shall be provided by the supplier. For design purposes the sand shall be assumed to have a infiltration rate of 1.2 gpd/f t . 2 . The absorption bed material shall be porous media consisting of graded gravel sized between 3/4 inch and 2-1/2 inches. Fill material and bed material should be readily available from local suppliers. The area of the absorption bed shall be 750 square feet based on a peak day flow of 5100 gpd and an absorption rate of 1.20 gpd/ft .2. The mound shall be constructed on a relatively shallow grade and the percolation rate of the natural soils is relatively high. The base are of the mound shall be a minimum of 1125 ft.2 based on 900 gpd and 0.8 gpd/ft . 2 . Mound dimensions for the system are as shown below. Refer to figure 7-13 for location of dimensions. A = 18 ft. B = 42 ft. C = 1 ft. (minimum)(1) E = 1 ft. (minimum)(1) F = 0.75 ft. G = 1 ft. H = 1.5 ft. I = 12 ft. (1) J = 6 ft. (1) K = 9 ft. (1) L = 60 ft. W = 36 ft. (1) actual dimension will vary slightly to meet 3:1 slopes The mound shall have six distribution laterals consisting of 4 inch diameter PVC drain tile placed 36 inches O.C. The laterals shall be connected with a 4 inch diameter PVC header on both ends. The distribution of the effluent to the mound will be in a 4 inch diameter PVC pipe. Mr. Dan Packard May 27, 1988 Page 4 Horse Stable Another subject unrelated to the wastewater treatment system, but of some concern to you, is the location of the proposed stable in the northeast corner of` the lot. We believe that the location of the stable does not pose a threat to contamination of the nearby pond and wells due to surface run-off. An intervening ditch should intercept run-off from the stable area. The existing wells are over 200 feet from the stable and the nearest pond is about 50 feet away. The purpose of the design and letter report is to assist you in obtaining a Pitkin County permit for an on-site individual wastewater treatment system. Site Considerations Site criteria for mound systems are summarized in Table 7-7. These criteria reflect current practice. Slope limitations for mounds are more restrictive than for conventional systems, particularly for mounds used on sites with slowly permeable soils.
