The fee for a !SCS application is $330 for a permit :hat takes 6 hours or !ess for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of 355 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is 61000. The basic fee of 6330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit: second, before
final approval of the ISCS permit.

As requested, we observed the installation of the onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the subject site on
October 3, 2000 and December 13, 2000. The system was designed under our Job No. 11169-6, dated
July 7, 1999.
The system includes the installation of a 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with
a pump in a Biotube vault, and three chamber -beds, each bed with two rows of 9 chambers for a total
infiltrative area of 837 square feet (SF). A distribution box was installed to distribute effluent throughout
the beds. An OWS as -built drawing is included as Figure 1.
The pump, alarm, and Biotube vault were in place at the time of our visit. The construction foreman,
Walter Hooker, may activate the pumping system at his discretion. The components of the OWS were
installed in conformance with our plans and specifications.

Subject: Subsurface Investigation and OWS Design, Proposed Single Family Residence

Gentlemen:
As requested, we have evaluated subsurface conditions at the subject site and prepared an onsite
wastewater system (OWS) design for the proposed single family residence. We investigated subsurface
conditions on June 23, 1999.
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is located along Colorado State Highway 82 and borders the Roaring Fork River on the south
side, as indicated on Figure 1. The site was originally a concrete batch plant and has layers of gravelly fill
remaining onsite. The proposed drain field area is relatively flat. There is no vegetation.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A single-family residence with a total of four bedrooms is proposed at the location presented on Figure 2.
Each of the units will have an area of less than 2_000 square feet (SF) as proposed. The OWS is sized on 4
bedrooms, which results in an average daily flow of 600 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin
Environmental Health Department (AYEHD) loading of 75 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading
with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1050 GPD. This loading includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder, and wash-
ing machine. The drain field is to be a minimum of 104 feet to all existing and proposed wells.
SUBSURTACE CONDITIONS
We performed a subsurface investigation by performing 3 percolation tests, at depths of 24 to 35 inches,
and observing one profile pit at the locations indicated on Figure 2. Subsurface conditions in Profile I
consisted of 3 feet of sandy clay with gravel, underlain by sandy clay with large cobble to the maximum
depth explored of 8 feet. Percolation rates
�,varied from 17 to 40 minutes per inch (MPI), and indicated on
Table 1. The average percolation rate is 27 MPI. No free ground water was observed in the test pit.

RECOMMENDATIONS
We recommend the installation of one septic tank, an effluent pumping system, and four chamber -type drain
field trenches installed at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an ave ?. 00a
sewage load of 1050 GPD and a percolation rate of 27 MPI. We recommend the installation of o �..
11� two-compartment pre -cast concrete septic tank an effluent pump in an Orenco Biotube' vault as
indicated on Figure 4. With basement plumbing and the relatively flat sites, the septic tanks will be installed
at depths of 8 to 10 feet. Risers must be installed to bring all access lids to the ground surface. A um
required to accommodate basement plumbing and to distribute the effluent to the trenches to increa� Da
performance of the field. We recommend a distribution box to distribute effluent to the fields. The pump 13
must have a minimum flow rate of 25 gallons per minute and at a total dynamic head of 19.1 feet. There
should be an approximate 250 -gallon dose per cycle. Pump details are presented on the pump curve. We
recommend the installation of four trenches, each having one row of 13 chambers, as indicated on Figures 2
and 3. ff

If additional bedrooms are anticipated in unfinished areas, we recommend sizing of the OWS for the
build -out number of bedrooms. The installation of an OWS for the build -out number of bedrooms is
most economical in the long term.
Equipment movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to
reduce compaction of the receiving soils. We recommend the bottom of the trenches be scarified with
a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel.
We recommend the surface of the field be seeded after installation of the field area. We recommend using a
native seed mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to
15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of,
and assume responsibility for, continued maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring
program, we recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened
vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not
putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should
be minimized.
The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed
for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas
should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIMITATIONS
An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation,
layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably
different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on
the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to
evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon
completion of the OWS

All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the APEHD ISDS regul ' equirements.

Gentlemen:
Per discussions with Nancy MacKenzie of the Aspen Pitkin Environmental Health Department, we have
made general revisions, corrections and clarifications with respect to proposed Pitkin Iron OWS.
1. Any location where the residential water line comes within 10 feet of the proposed sewer line a
"lining" or "casing" of the water line is required. Pipe of Schedule 40 rating or better is required, ridged
end caps of equivalent grade must be glued in a watertight fashion to the ends of the encasement.
2. All distribution boxes must 1 foot by 3 feet and require a baffle to disperse effluent at the inlet.
3. Septic tanks at Lots 2 and 4 must be upgraded from 2000 -gallon to 2500 -gallon two-compartment
pre -cast concrete septic tanks with a pump in a BiotubeTM vault.
4. The septic tank at lot 6 needs to be upgraded from a 1500 -gallon to a 2000 -gallon two-compartment
pre -cast concrete septic tank with BiotubeTM vault.
5. The average percolation rate for lot 4 is 31 minutes per inch (MPI), rather than 24 MPI.
6. A total of 99 chambers are proposed at lot 5; three beds, each having 3 rows of I I chambers.
