The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of $65 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before
final approval of the ISDS permit.
Application for an individual sewage disposal system is hereby submitted. I hereby certify that the above information is true and
accurate and that I have provided true and accurate information on locations of all existing and proposed wells, contour
intervals, buildings, property lines, ditches, slopes, waterlines, springs, suction or irrigation lines, drinking water cisterns, drain
tiles, irrigation ditches, lakes, water courses, streams, floodplains, dry gulches, and existing septic systems. I hereby certify
that any such features not shown on attached site map are not present. Issuance of the permit does not imply the approval of
any other permit required for construction pursuant to Pitkin County codes. No construction may be undertaken until all
approvals and permits have been obtained.
The Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department, Pitkin County and employees of these agencies will be held harmless
should the individual sewage disposal system fail or malfunction. The permit to construct is issued on information submitted,by
the applicant or his/her representatives. The owner assumes full responsibility in case of failure of the system.

As requested, we observed the installation of the onsite wastewater system for the subject site on August
7 and November 27, 2002. The system was designed under our Job No. 13709W, dated August 26, 2002
and revised September 10, 2002.
The system includes the installation of a 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with
a BiotubeTM pump vault in the second compartment. Four chamber -trenches and a three -outlet concrete
distribution box were installed. Two trenches had 1 row of seven chambers each, one trench had 1 row
of 4 chambers, and one trench had 1 row of 3 chambers for a total of 21 chambers and of 325.5 square
feet of infiltrative area. To achieve even distribution, each outlet on the distribution box directed effluent
to seven chambers. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The PVC drain line for the water features
should be monitored for signs of odor or effluent, in the unlikely event of a broken sewer pipe. I
The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications.

Subject: Tish Nettleship.
Perc tests around the drain field at Tish'es house did not go great due to
the backfill used around the original drain field. It was clay fill. I
would like to assess the existing drain field based on the LTAR of the
recieving soils, and not the perc test.
Is this a feasable procedure?

We dont count on anything that Bob Nelson did! Yes, you need to redo the tests for an expansion. You
got a lot faster rates in different area as I remember. --what does Ed say about perc tests near an existing
field?-- And what do we do about the existing field size if you get faster perc rates right next to it???? Won't
it be nice to get Tish done one of these years!

familar). The field has been in for 15 years or so. Bob peres were 46 mpi. I
got much better rates about 100 feet away. Client wants to re-perc existing
field to get more credit for it.
I have tried to explain to client, they will not listen to my reasoning.
They want me to ask you. Permit # is 79055.
The soil is good, it is alluvial material deposited by Snowmass Creek
told the client I would touch base with you. I am sure we are thinking the
same thing. (but I will let you answer)

No, I would not think we would give credit for an existing field size at another perc - mainly
because it is 15 years old. Plus, the original sizing would be undersized for today's standards,
and if they were doing an addition - they would have to bring that up to code anyhow. What is the
last name on that? I have not heard from them yet. If you get me the parcel ID I can pull the file.

processing of the Individual Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) permit for the above stated
residence/property.
It is mandatory that our office receives an "As Built" letter from the engineer who
designed the system. The letter will confirm that they observed the installation of the,
system as designed. Any changes to the system must be noted in the letter or by a new
set of plans. The Building Department will not issue a Certificate of Occupancy for this
property until they are notified that the ISDS permit process is complete.
This office must receive the "As Built" letter from the engineer no later than 30 days
from the date of this letter.

As requested, we investigated subsurface conditions at the site and designed an onsite wastewater system
(OWS) upgrade for the remodel. The previous design dated August 26, 2002 should be discarded to avoid
confusion. The subsurface investigation was performed on May 29, 2001.
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The existing residence
intends to convert three existing rooms to three bedrooms. The additional bedrooms will serve a separate
OWS. A separate stub -out will be needed to serve the proposed OWS. The existing septic tank and drain
field will remain in use. There is a lined water feature 10 feet south of the southeast corner of the house. The
proposed drain field area has a 2% slope to the west and a moderate cover of native grasses. The site is
supplied water by a well, located 102+ feet from the proposed drain field.
CONSTRUCTION
A remodel completed in 2001 created additional area for conversion of three rooms to bedrooms. The total
living area is 5000 square feet (SF). The three additional bedrooms will be served by a separate OWS, as
indicated on Figure 1. The OWS was sized based three bedrooms and 600 gallons per day (GPD) using
Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The
loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1050 GPD. This includes washing machines and garbage grinders.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
A subsurface investigation was performed b digging three percolation holes, 37 to 44 inches deep, and one
profile pit at the locations_ indicated on Figure 1, Subsurface materials in the profile pit consisted of 1.5 feet
of sandy topsoil, underlain by slightly clayey sand with gravel and boulders to the maximum depth explored
of 8 feet. No ground water was encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 5 to 10 minutes
per inch (MPI). The average rate is 8 MPL Percolation data is presented in Table 1. Additional percolation
tests were performed in the area of the existing field. The results are not relevant to this design.
RECONEMENDATIONS
The installation requires a septic tank and three chamber -trenches at the locations presented on Figure 1.
The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 600 GPD and a percolation rate of 8 MPI. The

installation includes one 15\/00 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septi tank, tanthree chamber -
trenches. Each trench must have one row of seven chambers for a total of 21 chambers. A flow splitter
basin or a concrete distribution box is required to distribute effluent. Trenches must be installed within four
feet of the ground surface. If gravity discharge cannot be achieved we must be contacted for pump details.
Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to
minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick,
shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers.
The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at
the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to
15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner realizes an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must assume
responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank
should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned
during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable
materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized.
The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed
for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas
should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIMITATIONS
An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation,
layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from
those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed
OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the
performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the PCEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.
