Nancy McKenzie
Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Dept.

Aspen, Colorado 81611
Dear Nancy MacKenzie:
Thanks so much for all your assistance in scoping out and designing a septic plan to
suit our home and addition. I am pleased that we can fit it all in and that we will soon
have a system that works and works well.
Enclosed please find my application for a septic system upgrade and a check. I have
also enclosed an 11"*17" copy of the plans and a copy of the plat which shows our
home, the proposed addition, and the approximate location of the septic system.
Also enclosed please find some information prepared a number of years ago by Bob
Nelson approving both the septic and water system for the home. Note that we have
addressed his concerns about water quality by installing a comprehensive Culligan
system in our home (a system that will be expanded for the expanded home) that
includes several filters, an ultraviolet lamp to kill bacteria, a water softener, and active
charcoal filter. Since we have young children I was especially concerned about any
problems with the water and have taken all the precautions necessary to sleep soundly
at night.
As to water quantity, we are on a spring -fed system shared by three homes. (A fourth
home also has rights to the system but has elected not to use the system). The system is
not suited to a pump test. To provide for adequate storage capacity, as you know I have
a y ho e for on wa errstora e s500 and oacouple lons I that with acmpresssoractivate
and pump to0 tank in
o provide
my home g
for better pressure at the house.
Given the relatively low flow rate from the spring, a number of years ago I invested in
a well on our property. (See attached papers.) The well is highly prolific but the water
quality is poor. While both Little John's and Culligan can treat the water -- it comes at
a steep price. It's nice to know we have all this water; some day when the technologies
for "problem water" improve and become less expensive we intend to utilize the well.
For now, wehave far better water quality from the spring. Note that as part of the
addition we will be relocating the water line away from the septic line that it now
nearly touches!
Thanks again for your assistance. I am now in the process of seeking an installer for
the system and getting tests of two water samples as you requested.
