Any changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer prior to them being made. Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin County ISDS regulations. There must be a 132 foot separation between the well and the field. There should be 10 feet between any lined water feature and the field. Any unlined pond or ditch must maintain a setback of at least 82 feet. This design will consist of one 2000 gallon two compartment tank with an effluent filter on the outlet. A flow splitter basin will be used to distribute effluent to 5 trenches, each trench having 12 chambers for a total of 60 chambers. Each trench should be separated by at least 6 feet of undisturbed soil. This department does not endorse any brand of products. This permit must be kept on-site during installation. The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. *Revegetation over the area of the field is very important for the functioning of the system. Pitkin County has guidelines that must be followed to assure the plants that are introduced are appropriate for the conditions of the area. The system was designed under our Job No. 16526, last revised August 12, 2004. The system includes the installation of a 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet, and seven gravelless chamber -trenches. One trench has one row of 11 Infiltra- tor® Quick4TM chambers, two trenches have one row of 12 chambers each, one trench has one row of 13 chambers, one trench has one row of 14 chambers, one trench has one row of 15 chambers, and one trench has one row of 16 chambers, for a total of 93 chambers and 911.4 ft' of infiltrative area. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The easternmost 3 trenches were deeper than desired, but are suitable with the belief that any revision would not improve the situation. The observed components of the OWS were installed in general conformance with our design. Our installation observations do not imply a guarantee or warranty of materials or workmanship. The revisions are based on a more accurate site plan provided by Hagman Architects, Inc. Our previous design date avoid confusion. Hepworth-Pawlak Geo- technical, Inc. (HP Geotech) performed the subsurface investigation on June 8, 2004. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area slopes approximately 16% to the northeast. The drain field area has moderate cover of native grasses and weeds with scattered scrub oak. Water is supplied to the site by a well located greater than 132 feet from the proposed drain field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A Il g a► a proposed at the location presented on Figure 1. The OWS was sized based on 4 bedrooms and 800 gallons per day (GPD) using Pitkin County Environ- mental Health Department (PCEFID) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1400 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. If additional bedrooms in unfinished areas are possible, it is suggested the OWS be constructed to handle the additional loading. The installation of an engineered OWS to serve future build -out can be cost effective. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS HP Geotech performed the subsurface investigation by digging three percolation holes, 42 to 64 inches deep, and one profile pit at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface materials reported in the profile pit consisted of 2 feet of silty, sandy, gravel topsoil, underlain by silty, sandy clay to 4 feet, underlain by clayey, sandy gravel with cobbles to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. 4 Percolation tests indicate percolation rates ranging from 20 to 60 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate ='rcolation data is included as Appendix A. RECOMMENDATIONS The design requires a septic tank with an effluent filter and a gravelless chamber -trench drain field at the locations presented on Figure 1. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the trenches should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the trenches. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbio- degradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIlVMATIONS A contractor who is experienced in OWS installation should be hired for the construction. Our investiga- tion, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the perfor- mance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The drain should be placed at each, level of excavation and at least I foot below lowest adjacent finish grade and[ sloped at a minimum 1% to a suitable gravity outlet. Free -draining granular material used in the underdrain system should contain less than 2% passing the No. 200 sieve, less than 500/6 passing the No. 4 sieve and have a maximum size of 2 inches. The drain gravel backfill should be at ]cast 2 feet deep and extend up to any seepage encountered in the side of the excavation. Pereols.tion Testing: Percolation tests were conducted on June 8, 2004 to evaluate the fenibilixy of an infiltration septic disposal system at the site. One profile pit and three percolation holes were dug at the locations shown on Figure 1. The test holes (nominal 12 inch diameter by 12 inch deep) were hand dug at the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and were soaked with water one day prior to testing. The soils exposed in the percolation holes are similar to those exposed in the Profile Pit shown on Figure 2 and consist of about 2 feet of topsoil and 2 feet of stiff, sandy silty clay overlying sandy clayey gravel with cobbles to the pit depth of 8 feet. The percolation test results are presented in Table 1. Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the tested urea should be suitable for a conventional infiltration septic disposal system. Pitkin County' requires that a professional engineer design the infiltration septic disposal system.
