The OWS design is presented in a design dated July 5, 1997 and revised November 25, 1997, May 26, 1998, and March 17, 1998. The OWS was installed for a four bedroom residence of 2000 to 6000 square feet (SF). The installed OWS consist of a 1500 gallon single compartment precast concrete septic tank, a 1250 gallon two compart- ment precast concrete septic tank with a pump in a biotube vault, and 9600 SF of drip irrigation field. The 1500 gallon tank has an approx- imate 1.5 feet by 2 feet hole in the baffle. We believe with this hole the septic tank will act as a single compartment septic tank. The pump was installed, but electricity was not installed at the time of our observation. The OWS is in general conformance with our plans and specifications. On page 2 of the report the second sentence states the OWS was designed on 12 minutes per inch (MPI). This is a typing error. The OWS is designed on 48 MPI. 2. Fig. 2 indicates a'50% field reduction for the use of chambers. A 30% reduction for the use of chambers is allowed in Pitkin County. The difference between a 50% and a 30% reduction will require the installation 1395 square feet of chamber trenches utilizing a 30% field size reduction. The field should be constructed similar to Revised Figs. 1 and 2 with a total of 90 chambers in six trenches. All other recommendations in our April 10, 1998 should be followed. Morgan, As requested, we prepared an Onsite Wastewater System (OWS) design for the proposed residence. Subsurface conditions were investigated by the GTL/Thompson, Inc. (CTL). The CTL report was prepared under Job Nos. GS -2132 and GS -2154 dated March 27, 1997 and June 16, 1997. Nelson Environmental & Wastewater Solutions, Ltd (NEWS) also investi- gated subsurface conditions and performed percolation test. The Nelson report describing his results is dated October 20, 1997. SITE CONDITIONS - A three bedroom quest residence and a caretaker unit is proposed. The residence is located in a rural mountain area of Pitkin County, Colorado. Vegetation consists of oak brush, pinion pine and grasses. The slope is loo to 15% to the northwest at the proposed drain field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - An approximate 2500 square feet (SF), two story, four bedroom residence is proposed. The sewage load for a four bedroom residence with greater than 2500 SF is 800 gallons per day (GPD), 1400 GPD with a 1.75 peaking factor. This loading includes a p'� garbage grinder, dish washer, and washing machine. The residence will be served water by a public water supply. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - Subsurface conditions were investigated by a drilling 2 profile holes, 6 percolation holes; and excavating a pro- file pit, and 4 percolation holes. Please refer to the CTL and NEWS reports for details. Subsurface conditions from Profile 1, from the CTL report, consisted of organic sandy clay to 1 foot, underlain by sandy clay with occasional gravel to 7 feet, underlain by silty to clayey gravel, with cobbles and boulders to the maximum depth explored of 10 feet. Subsurface conditions from Profile 2, from the CTL report, consisted of organic sandy clay to 2 feet underlain by silty to clayey gravel, with cobbles and boulders to 5 feet, underlain by sandy clay with occasional gravel to 10 feet the maximum depth explored. No free water or bedrock was encountered. Percolation tests indicate percola- tion rates ranging from 0.09 to 120 minutes per inch (MPI). Subsurface conditions at the profile pit consisted of dark brown loam topsoil to 2 feet, underlain by dense reddish -brown sandy clay and gravel grading to a stiff sandy clay to the depth of the excavation of 9 feet. No bedrock or free water was encountered. Percolation test indicate perc rates ranging from 11 to 13 MPI, with an average perc rate is 12 MPI. 925 East 17th Avenue • Denver, Colorado 80218-1407 P.O. The OWS design is based on a sewage load of 1400 GPD and a percolation rate of 12 MPI. _ We recommend the installation of a minimum 1750 gallon two compartment precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet. A distribution box with flow equalizers should be installed for equal !' distribution between the trenches. We recommend the installation of four 3 feet by 7.00 feet chamber -trenches be installed as indicated on Fig. 1. The OWS should be constructed similar to the details presented on Figs. 1 through 3. The proposed OWS well serve a 2500 SF four bedroom home. If additional bedrooms are anticipated, we recommend installation of a larger septic system at the time of original construction. The septic tank would have to be increased by 500 gallons of capacity for each additional bedroom. Each additional bedroom will require 212 SF of trench. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE - The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. We recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials down the septic system. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, it should be noted a running toilet will consume in excess of 1000 GPD if allowed to run. As the system is designed for 1400 GPD, an excess 1000 gallon loading Will flood and irreparably harm the system. I LIMITATIONS - Our layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be called to observe the sub- surface conditions. If proposed construction is changed, we should be notified to evaluate the effect of the changes on the proposed system. All construction is to be in accordance with ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of ISDS regulations. The installer of the OWS is to be approved by the County Health Department, and is to have demonstrated a knowledge of the ISDS regulations and requirements. The OWS design includes one installation observation. Additional observations are not included in the cost of this design. Job No. GS -2132, dated March 27,1997 and additional percolation testing, CTL1Thompson, Inc. Job No. GS -2154 as requested by you. Two areas of percolation borings P-1 through P-6 were prepared during our soils and foundation investigation. Profile borings No.1 and No. 2 were drlllad to a depth of approximately 10 foot. Locations of the profile borings and percolation borings are shown on Figure 1. The soils encountered In the percolation and profile boring* consisted of sandy clays and sandy gravels with cobble and boulder. Percolation testing was performed on May 28,1997 and repeated on May 29, 1997. Test results from both days were simllar. Test results obtained on May 29, 1997 are presented on pigure 2. Percolation boring P-3 had been destroyed by the excavating equipment and no results are available for this boring. i The percolation rate is generally faster than one minute per inch- We believe that the gravel, cobble and boulders have created enough void space and that sand layers are able to disperse the water quickly. A standard leach field is not appropriate for this site. Additional percolation testing was requested in test pits excavated by the utility contractor. Locations of the test pits P-7 through P-9 are presented on Figura 1. The utility trench excavation in this area was observed by our laboratory/field manager. The excavation penetrated 1 foot of organic, sandy clays underlain by sandy clays with gravel and cobble. Interbedded sand layers and occasional boulders were observed. Percolatio ting was performed In test pit P-7 by hand excavating a B to a inch diameter0n the bottom of the test pit. The test hole was saturated and percolation testing performed the next day. Test results aro presented on Figure 2. We recommend a design percolation rate of 240 minutes per inch. Due to the wide range of percolation rates measured on this site we recommend performing additional percolation testing In the actual area when the final location Is chosen. Test for Individual Sewage System Design for the Morgan Residence, Homestead Track 14, Wildcat Ranch Subdivision, numbered as 0074 Popish Road Dear Mark, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolations tests to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study according to Article 5 of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Systems Regulation on September 25, 1997. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered during our visits to the property. Please furnish this letter and the forthcoming engineering design to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health .Department to obtain a permit to construct, this individual sewage system. Proposedd Constru ion: The planned guest residence, now under construction on the property, is a two story house on a full foundation with approximately 2500 square feet of living area. There is a total of three bedrooms, three baths and one hal£ baht in the guest house. In addition, an attached caretaker unit is planned, with one bedroom and a three-quarter bath. Therefore, a total of four bedrooms should be used for the basis of onsite wastewater system design. Low water -use toilet fixtures are to be provided in all bathrooms. The property is served by the treated water supply furnished by the subdivision_ Site Conditions' The site is in the Wildcat Ranch Subdivision on a large tract of land. Access to the site is from Popish Road off Lake Wildcat Road. The main water supply line is across the access road from the property and the water tap and shut-off are just east of the driveway. The water service line has been dug to the building site through a draw on the property. The ground surface which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field slopes to the Northwest at grades of IW/o to 15%. The vegetation in the area of the residence is primarily oak brush and a few pinion pines, with a large open meadow below the location of the building P.O. This meadow portion of the lot is covered with sagebrush, native grasses, weeds, and wild flowers. Subsurface Con-dilinns. A soil profile hole, and two previous soil borings by CTL/Thompson, Inc., were done within 25 feet of the proposed absorption area. Each was excavated or bored to a depth of nine or ten feet. No ground water was encountered in the profile excavations. The soil textures encountered were a dark brown, loam topsoil to about twenty four inches of depth and then, below the topsoil, a soil characterized as dense reddish brown stiff sandy clay and gravel, grading to a stiff sandy clay to the depth of the profile borings and excavation. Percolation Testing: The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate locations shown on Figure 1. Twelve inch diameter test holes were hand dug at the location of the proposed absorption area., after finding the deeper holes in the bottom of the backhoe pits to five feet filled with drainage water that remained for several days. The percolation tests in the sandy clay topsoil to about 24 inches in depth, were performed to a depth just above the reddish clays. Several inches of gravel were placed on the bottom of each of the shallow percolation test holes before beginning the presoak. The percolation holes were pre- soaked the morning of testing, eight hours before beginning the measurements. After the initial fillings, water was added approximately every two hours. The test holes, located in the black sandy clay topsoil, drained to within the bottom few inches of the hole after each presoak filling. We notel'that there was water standing in the other, deeper test holes into the stiff sandy clays for several clays after each rainstorm. For this reason, it was not possible to use conventional percolation test procedures to obtain a rate in any of the deeper percolation test hole locations prepared for this evaluation. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table 1. These results indicate that the layer of topsoil located on the site has an average percolation Rate of 12 minutes per inch. However, the sandy clays encountered just below the holes would have had very slow measured percolation rates, and for that reason, were not tested. 2 Morgan Residence Homestead Tract 14, Wildcat Ranch Subdivision 10/20/97 Page 3 The topography and the limiting layer of stiff sandy clay and gravel encountered have led us to recommend a onsite sewage system, using techniques other than those normally used for a conventional infiltration system_ Given the soil conditions and possible drainage patterns off of the ridge, we recommend that this sewage disposal system be designed by a registered professional engineer. As I mentioned in our phone conversations, we have referred this project to E. 4. Church, Inc. The usual minimum Pitici.a County requirements for this installation are based on an average daily system flow of 800 gallons per day. This flow would require a septic tank volume of 2000 gallons_ A large mound, trench, or drip irrigation system, incorporated into the meadow or at the base of the hillside below the house, could be used for discharge of the septic tank effluent. The design options will be contained in the completed septic system design developed by the consulting engineer_ Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions considerably different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations.
