The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. *Revegetation over the area of the field is very important for the functioning of the system. Pitkin County has guidelines that must be followed to assure the plants that are introduced are appropriate for the conditions of the area. If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $100 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $600 is due at the time of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before final approval of the ISDS permit. HP Geotech has prepared a soils and percolation test, dated October 31, 2005, which will be used for the OWS design. SITE CONDITIONS The property is located in Shield -O -Mesa, Snowmass Colorado in an area where OWS and wells are necessary. A 4 -bedroom residence, having less than 6000 square feet (SF), is proposed on the subject property. A well will serves the property, which is located 132'+ from proposed drain field. SUBSURFACE The subsurface was investigated by HP Geotech by drilling one profile hole and three percolation holes as indicated on report included in appendix. HP Geotech indicated the profile hole consisted of about 1.0 feet of topsoil, underlain by claystone-shale bedrock. Ground water was not encountered. The design will be based upon a percolation rate of 180 MPI. DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS The OWS design is based on 4 total bedrooms and an average sewage load of 800 GPD. The installation must include a 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with a BiotubeTM pump vault. Pump basin alternatives may be considered. Four mounded, pressurized beds, each with approximately 4 feet of imported sand filter material must be installed. The imported sand must be placed a minimum of 3 feet below grade and extend to a minimum of 1 -foot above grade, as shown on plans. The bedrock must be excavated and removed prior to placement of sand. Each bed must have a sand footprint of 12' X 80' or 960 SF. The total infiltrative area will be 3840 SF. Each bed must have two 2 -inch, 68 -foot, PVC laterals, with '/4 orifices drilled on 4 -foot centers. The laterals should be served by a level manifold. The orifices should face downward, and the laterals OWS Design Project No. 1143 12/27/05 Page 2 must be placed within the gravel as indicated on the plans. SITE PREPARATION The mound perimeter should be staked out prior to construction. Remove excess vegetation and grade, if necessary, to prepare area for placement of sand. Remove 6 -inches of topsoil, and stockpile. The topsoil should be placed on top of mound to promote re -vegetation after construction of mounded drain field. OPERATION INFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE The surface of the drain field should be seeded upon completion. Vegetation is an important factor in drain field performance. Geo -fabrics or plastics should not be used over the drain field. Livestock should not graze on the drain field. Plumbing fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWS. For Example, a running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a drain field. The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years and clean the effluent filter as needed. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non -biodegradable materials should not be placed into the OWS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWS. The OWS is engineered for domestic waste only. ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES If design includes a pump, air release valves and weep holes should be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade. Precast concrete tanks and distribution boxes should be used, unless plastic or fiberglass is required. Access to all tank compartments and distribution devices is optimal. INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS ALL SERVICE septic, LLC, and the county must view the OWS during construction. The OWS observation should be performed before backfill, after placement of chambers and distribution pipes. Septic tanks, distribution devices, pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified 48 hours in advance to observe the installation. Dear 1&. Johns: As requested, Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. performed a subsoil study for design of foundations at the subject site. The study was conducted in accordancewith our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to you dated October 4, 200. The data obtained and our recommendations based on the proposed construction and subsurface conditions encountered are presented in this report. Evaluation of potential geologic hazard impacts to the site are beyond the scope of this study. Proposed Construction: The proposed residence will be a two story wood ,''Tame structure with a slab -on -grade floor and partial crawlspace located on the site as shown on Figure 1. There will be a detached garage with slab -on -grade floor to the southwest of the proposed residence. Cut depths are expected to range between about 4 to 6 feet. Foundation loadings for this type of construction are assumed to be relative!), light and typical of the proposed type of construction. If building conditions or foundation loadings are significantly different from those desmibed above, we should be notified to re-evaluate the recommendations presented in this report. Site Conditions. Th: site was vacant and covered with about''/, inch of snow al the time of our field exploration. A pioneered driveway provides access into the building area. The ground surface in the building area slopes strongly down to the north at grades up to about 14%. There is about 8 feet of elevation difference across the proposed building area. Vegetation consists of sagebrush, grass and weeds in the southern portion of the lot and scruboak, sagebrush, grass and weeds in the northern portion of the lot. Shale bedrock is exposed in the cuts for the pioneered driveway. Subsurfkv Conditions: The subsurface conditions at the site were evaluatc;l by excavating two exploratory pits and a profile pit at the approximate locations shown on G� N 1'izure I . The logs of the pits are presented on Figure 2. Free -draining granular material used in the underdrain system should contain less than 2%o passing. the No. 200 sieve, less than 500/6 passing the ti'o, 4 sieve and have a maximtun size of 2 laches. The drain Gravel backfill should be at least 1 %z feet deep. Surface Drainage: The following drainage precautions should be olnerved during construction and maintained at all times after the residence has been completed'. 1) Inundation of the foundation excavations and underslab arcas.should be avoided during construction. 2) Exterior backfill should be adjusted to near optimum moisture and compacted to at least 95% of the maximum standard Proctor density in pavement and slab areas and to at least 90% of the maximum standard Proctor density in landscape areas. Free -draining wall baekf.il( should be capped with about -1 feet of the on-site, finer graded soils to rc&c.e surface water infiltration. 3) The grouad surface surrounding the exterior of the building should be sloped to drain away from the foundation in all directions. Percolation Testing: Percolation tests were conducted on October 12, 2005 to evaluate \ a the fewibility of an infiltration septic disposal system at the site. One profile pit and three percolation holes were dug at the locations shown on Figure 1. The test hulls ('nominal �Q 12 inch diameter by 1.2 inch dsep) were hand dug at the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and were soaked with water one day prior to testing. The materials exposed In the percolation holes are similar to those exposed in the profile Pit shown on Figure 2 and consist of about 1 foot of topsoil overlying hard claystone-shale bedrock to the refusal depth cif 4'/z feet. The percolation test results are presented in Table 1. The percolation test results indicate an infiltration rate of 1 go minutes per inch.
