If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $65 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before final approval of the ISDS permit. The soils test and system design must be done by a Registered Professional Engineer. The investigation was performed on May 16, 2002. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has an 8% slope to the northeast and has a moderate cover of native grasses. T baric ill bej sowed water by a well located 100+ feet from the drain field.- . J PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A barn with a o , xn.caretaker J ith a living areaibss than 700 squaretet (SF), is proposed at the location presented on Figure 2. The S was sized based on 1 bedroom and 150 gallons per day (GPD) using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 75 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 262.5 GPD. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was performed by drilling three percolation holes, 29 to 34 inches deep, and one profile hole at the locations indicated on Figure 2. Subsurface materials in the profile hole consisted of 1.5 feet of topsoil, underlain by sandy clay to 7.5 feet, underlain by fractured Mancos shale bedrock to the ma"tn depth explored of 10 feet. lNo ground water was encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates o1a7 minutes per inch (MPI). Pergplation data is presented in Table 1. RECOMMENDATIONS The installation requires a septic tank and a single chamber -trench drain field at the location presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 150 GPD and a percolation rate of 27 MPI. The installation includes a =gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter at the outlet 4nd one chamber -trench. If gravity flow cannot be achieved from the septic tank to the drain field our trtrr office should be contacted for pump specifications. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of the chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbio- degradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIlV RATIONS An OWS design must be installed by a contractor who is experienced in' its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations.
