Comments
Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications dated May 22, 2002. Any
changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer 2rior to them being made.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin
County ISDS regulations. Separation between the tank and the house should be 5 ft, tank and the field should be 6

The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of $65 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before
final approval of the ISDS permit.
Application for an individual sewage disposal system is hereby submitted. I hereby certify that the above information is true and
accurate and that I have provided true and accurate information on locations of all existing and proposed wells, contour
intervals, buildings, property lines, ditches, slopes, waterlines, springs, suction or irrigation lines, drinking water cisterns, drain
tiles, irrigation ditches, lakes, water courses, streams, floodplains, dry gulches, and existing septic systems. I hereby certify
that any such features not shown on attached site map are not present. Issuance of the permit does not imply the approval of
any other permit required for construction pursuant to Pitkin County codes. No construction may be undertaken until all
approvals and permits have been obtained.
The Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department, Pitkin County and employees of these agencies will be held harmless
should the individual sewage disposal system fail or malfunction. The permit to construct is issued on information submitted by

INFORMATION BELOW IS INCLUDED.
The soils test and system design must be done by a Registered Professional Engineer. You should plan
to meet with the RPE at your site to discuss where the soils tests should be done to meet all of the
County regulations and where you want to put your house. The RPE will be your contact for issues you
want to discuss about your system's size and location. Each box should be checked to indicate the
following have been submitted before the application can be accepted.

Site map must include locations of all existing and proposed wells within setback distances
(including on surrounding properties), contour intervals, all proposed and existing buildings,
property lines, ditches, slopes of greater than 15% in the area of the drain field, water lines,
sprinkler systems, springs, suction (irrigation) lines, drinking water cisterns, drain tiles, irrigation
ditches, lakes, ponds, water courses, streams, floodplains, floodways, dry gulches, or existing
septic systems. This must include all such features on neighboring properties within setbacks.

Proof of adequate water supply: (Well must be drilled before septic permit can be issued.):
For private wells, recent well driller's pump test showing gpm actually produced, well permit
showing legal supply. The minimum yield from the well or water storage shall be .07
gallons/minute/person which is 100 gallons/person/day. There must be storage or yield capable
of a 24-hour supply for domestic purposes only (not including fire protection or irrigation)
For community systems, proof there is adequate water for all houses served by the system.
Proof of adequate water quality with bacteriology test: Aspen Consolidated Sanitation District
and Snowmass Water & Sanitation District perform this test locally.
Percolation tests
All ISDS Permit fees are $330 to cover first six hours of processing. Hourly rate of $65 will be
charged beyond first six hours, up to $1,000. Tank only fee $110. Please make check payable
to: Pitkin County Environmental Health Department.
Copy of county approval (1041 approval, subdivision approval, etc.)
You must obtain written approval from Community Development before submitting this
application if your septic system is outside the building envelope and any part of the
system is more than 30" above grade.
A WAIVER IS AVAILABLE FOR SUBMITTING A BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATION PRIOR TO
OBTAINING AN INDIVIDUAL SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM PERMIT.

As requested by Watkins & Associates, we investigated subsurface conditions and designed an onsite
wastewater system (OWS) for the proposed barn. The investigation was performed on May 16, 2002.
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain
field area has an 8% slope to the northeast and has a moderate cover of native grasses. T baric ill bej
sowed water by a well located 100+ feet from the drain field.- . J
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A barn with a o , xn.caretaker J ith a living areaibss than 700 squaretet (SF), is proposed at
the location presented on Figure 2. The S was sized based on 1 bedroom and 150 gallons per day
(GPD) using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 75 gallons per day per
person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 262.5 GPD.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
A subsurface investigation was performed by drilling three percolation holes, 29 to 34 inches deep, and one
profile hole at the locations indicated on Figure 2. Subsurface materials in the profile hole consisted of 1.5
feet of topsoil, underlain by sandy clay to 7.5 feet, underlain by fractured Mancos shale bedrock to the
ma"tn depth explored of 10 feet. lNo ground water was encountered. Percolation tests indicate
percolation rates o1a7 minutes per inch (MPI). Pergplation data is presented in Table 1.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The installation requires a septic tank and a single chamber -trench drain field at the location presented on
Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 150 GPD and a percolation rate of 27
MPI. The installation includes a =gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an
effluent filter at the outlet 4nd one chamber -trench. The trench must haven row of 94 ambA for a total

area of 139.5 SF. If gravity flow cannot be achieved from the septic tank to the drain field our

Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to
minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick,
shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of the chambers.
The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at
the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to
15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of
and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the
septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to
be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbio-
degradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized.
The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed
for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas
should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIlV RATIONS
An OWS design must be installed by a contractor who is experienced in' its installation. Our investigation,
layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from
those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed
OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the
performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the PCEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.
