M., and numbered as 13000 Shield -O -Terrace Road Dear Dave, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests on the subject property to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations, individual Sewage Disposal Systems on Saturday, August 14, 1993. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The planned residence is a four bedroom, five bathroom, two story log house with an additional attached caretaker unit. In the future the owner is planning another employee unit in the proposed barn.. That unit is planned to contain two bedrooms and a bathroom. The property is served by an individual well drilled to a depth of 95 feet. The lot is approximately 63 acres in size. Site Conditions: The site is a lot at the top of the Shield 0 Terrace Road in a gently sloping meadow. The building site is located in an area vegetated with sage brush and grasses. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes gently to the East at less than a 5% grade. There are no irrigation ditches in the immediate area. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile was dug to a depth of eight feet in the vicinity of the proposed absorption area for the septic system. The excavation encountered no ground water. Bedrock was not present within eight feet of the surface of the ground. The soil texture was a silty P.O. There is some decrease in the clay content with depth. Neither the surface topsoil or the subsoils exhibited a tendency to swell when wet. The soil texture encountered in the area of all three percolation test holes was a silty clay loam to the depth of the holes, about to 3 feet. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The set of test holes was hand dug to a depth of thirty two inches. Four inches of gravel was placed on the bottom of each hole. The dark brown to black topsoil was well consolidated. Some smearing and compaction was observed in percolation test holes prior to roughing the sidewalls and bottom. One of the percolation test holes inadvertently intercepted a rodent burrow. It therefore was difficult to fill and presoak. As a result, it was not measured. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area east of the staked building foundation area. Three shallow holes were hand dug to a total depth of between thirty-two and thirty- four inches. As mentioned, the test hole closest to the profile excavation intercepted a rodent burrow and could not be measured. Water was added to the two other test holes the morning that the percolation test was scheduled. In addition, to accomplish a satisfactory presoak, water was added by this company every two hours for approximately six hours before beginning the percolation test measurements. We made an effort to keep the gravel on the bottom of each test hole submerged. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the silty clay loam soils have an average percolation rate of 13 minutes per inch and are acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may i Sanders Residence Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design August 15, 1993 Page 3 need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described.
