Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications dated August 26, 1999 with
revised Figures 1 & 2and pump design dated 8/26/99. Any changes must be approved by this department and
the design engineer prior to them being made.
Per Pitkin County policy an ISDS for a barn is sized based on one horse per stall and 50 gallons of water usage per
wash. The engineer design includes 275 gallons per day for the horse wash; therefore there can be five
horses/stalls in the barn. The design is sized to include a potential attached living unit of less than 2,000 sq. ft. with
no more than 2 bedrooms.
The design has one 1500 gallon two compartment concrete tank with pump in biotube vault. There is a 30%
reduction for use of infiltrators.The design is for a bed, 3 chambers wide by 16 chambers long = 48 units.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin
County ISDS regulations.

County ISDS Regulation in effect at the time of issue. This permit becomes invalid 6 months from the date that the permit was
issued unless system construction has commenced or an extension has been approved in writing by the Department.
As -built drawings must be included with this permit before the final approval will be issued.

The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit: second, before
final approval of the ISDS permit.
Application for an individual sewage disposal system is hereby submitted. I hereby certify that the above information is true and
accurate and that I have provided true and accurate information on locations of all existing and proposed wells, contour
intervals, buildings, property lines, ditches, slopes, waterlines, springs, suction or irrigation lines, drinking water cisterns, drain
tiles, irrigation ditches, lakes, water courses, streams, floodplains, dry gulches, and existing septic systems. I hereby certify
that any such features not shown on attached site map are not present. Issuance of the permit does not imply the approval of
any other permit required for construction pursuant to Pitkin County codes. No construction may be undertaken until all
approvals and permits have been obtained.
The Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department, Pitkin County and employees of these agencies will be held harmless
should the individual sewage disposal system fail or malfunction. The permit to construct is issued on information submitted by

Dear Ms. Goodman and Mr. Bonini,
As requested, we are providing this revision of our OWS design for the subject site. The revision is based
on the additional loading of a horse wash to be located nest to the proposed barn from our May 17, 1999
design letter. This letter should be used in conjunction with our original design letter. This letter includes
two revised figures., Figures 1 and 2, and a pump curve diagram. The original Figures 1 and 2, and the
pump curve, should be removed to reduce confusion.
SITE CONDITIONS - The barn site is located in a rural area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The proposed
drain field area has a moderate slope. There is a moderate cover of grasses, sagebrush, and scrub oak at the
proposed field.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION — The proposed barn will contain a one -bedroom residence with 1'/2
bathrooms and a horse wash. The living area will be less than 2000 square feet (SF). We proposed to design
the OWS on two bedrooms and 275 gallons per day for the horse wash. The average sewage loading for a
two-bedroom residence is 300 gallons per day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Depart-
mentEHD) loading of 75 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75
D n is 10 6 GPD. This loading includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder, and washing machine. The barn is
served water by a well, which is greater than 102 feet from the proposed drain field. There is a pond near
the river. The drain field must be greater than 50 feet from the pond. There is an irrigation ditch to the west
and above the proposed field area. It is proposed to line the line within 50 feet of the proposed field.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - A subsurface investigation was performed by drilling seven percolation
holes, 27 to 40 inches deep, and one profile hole. Subsurface conditions encountered in the profile hole
consist of 1 foot of rich topsoil, underlain to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet by silty sand with gravel
and cobbles. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 8 to 40 minutes per inch (MPI). The average
percolation rate is 26 MPI. No groundwater or bedrock was encountered.
RECOMMENDATIONS - We recommend the installation of a septic tank, pump, and one gravelless
chamber bed. The OWS design is based on an average se�ge load of 575 GPD and a percolation rate of
26 MPI. We recommend the installation of a 1500 -gallon two-compartment concrete septic tank with a
pub in a biotube vault. A pump is required duefo e evation differences and to increase the efficiency of
the field. We recommend a pump with 25 gallons per minute flow rate and 33.7 feet of head be installed.
The floats should be set to pump 250 gallons. Pump details are presented as Figure 3 and the pump curve.
The drain field should consist of one 100 -feet by 9 -feet gravelless chamber bed be installed, as indicated on

If additional bedrooms are possible, we recommend the OWS be constructed to serve the additional
loading. This OWS design will serve a two-bedroom residence less than 2000 SF. For greater than two -
bedrooms, the septic tank can be upsized 328 gallons for each additional bedroom. Each additional bed-
room would require an additional 188 SF of field or 13 gravelless chambers and require a new permit.
We recommend the surface of the field be seeded after installation of the field using a native seed mix.
These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler
system should be installed over the fields. No landscaping or plastic can be installed over the field, which
will reduce performance of the fields. Livestock should not be confined in the field area.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE - The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer
service, and must assume the responsibility for maintenance of the OWS. The OWS is a low maintenance
system, but the owner must have the septic tank pumped. We recommend the septic tank be pumped and
the effluent filter be cleaned or "hosed off' every two years. There are daily considerations, such as not put-
ting plastic or other nonbiodegradable material into the OWS. Water use must be monitored so toilets are
not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can consume in excess of
1000 GPD. A loading of 1000 GPD could flood and irreparably harm the OWS and stress the onsite well.
We caution against installation of a water softener. The loading from the backwash of a water softener may
be detrimental to OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is
installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIMITATIONS - An OWS design requires installation by a contractor who is experienced in its
installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. if subsur-
face conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be
notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this
design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS.
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.
