Dear Boone:
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed another soils
study and percolation tests to relocate the proposed system to the area of the property further
from the ponds and in an area where the absorption field can be installed shallower. We have
designated this area as Group 3. It is our opinion that a septic system for the proposed residence
can be constructed in this area and work effectively. We conducted this study according to
Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations Individual Sewage Diggglij Systems on August 23,
1994. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please
furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest
convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system.
Ptypond Qngruction:
The planned main residence is a relatively large multi-level house with a caretaker unit. There is a
total of six bedrooms and eight baths in the residence.
Site Conditions:
The property is served by the treated surface water supply furnished by the subdivision. The site
is a lot in the Wildcat Ranch PUD above and to the north of Wildcat Reservoir. The lot is large,
and the building envelope approximately 15 acres.
The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, isin a
draw about 400 feet below the construction site and slopes gently to the West and Southwest at a
grade of approximately 20% to 25%. There are no irrigation ditches or obvious drainages in this
area.
A soil profile pits was excavated 1.0 feet from each of the test holes in the proposed absorption
area labeled as the Group 3 alternative. The profile excavation was dug to a depth of eight and
one half feet. The excavation encountered no ground water, and no bedrock was present within
eight feet of the surface of the ground. The soil texture within the Group 3 profile hole was a silt
loam topsoil to sixty inches deep, grading into a sandy clay with some increase in the clay content
with depth. There was some moisture content in the soils in each profile hole. There was some
smearing and compaction noted from the pressure of the excavating equipment used to prepare
the profile hole below six feet.

The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the
approximate location shown on Figure 1. The twelve inch diameter test holes were hand dug at
the bottom of backhoe excavations, and several inches of gravel placed on the bottom of each
hole. The group 3 percolation test holes, with depths varying from fifty-three to sixty eight
inches, were located in soils characterized as a silty loam.
The percolation holes were pre-soaked the morning of testing, eight hours before the percolation
test was begun. After the initial fillings, water was continuously added approximately every thirty
minutes for the immediate four hour period before beginning the percolation test. There was
some water remaining in all of the percolation test holes when the tests were begun.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in 'fable I. These results indicate the loans
topsoils located in the this group in the draw have an average percolation rate of 14 minutes per
inch and would be acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system.
LimitAtions: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area
for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in
this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated, There is
some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may
not have been v4dent at the time of this investigation. If further excavation reveals conditions
different from those described, additional evaluations may be necessary. This office should be
advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate the
recommendations.

This department conducted an initial site inspection of the two proposed
locations for the absorption fields the beginning of June, 1994. The upper
location nearest the house was recommended as the preferred location- for
the absorption field. A permit for that location was issued on 6/9/94.
Since that time, this department has been asked to re -issue the permit for
the lower location, below the pond. Another site inspection was
conducted on. 7/28/94 on this 'alternative site.
The following concerns must be addressed before the septic permit can be
re -issued:
1. When using Infiltrator chambered system in an absorption bed,
only a 40% reduction in field size is allowed. A new engineered drawing
must be submitted with the larger bed.
2. The design and location of the pond must be finalized. This is
critical for an evaluation of the absorption field's location and its
proximity to the pond The setbacks in our regulations establish minimum
distances .from components. I would suggest that, when possible, it is in
the' best interest of the owner to use even greater distances in setbacks.
3. Locating the frield directly below, the pond was not the location
preferred by our department because of possible subsurface discharge and.
any overflow or failure could impair the functioning of the septic system
by overloading and saturating the soils. This would severely impair the
soil's ability to absorb and filter water of the septic system. Diversion

of subsurface discharge and overflow discharge away from the field
should be indicated on the final drawing submitted to this department.
4. Once the pond and septic designs are finalized, I propose that we
all do a final site inspection together, with locations and grades staked
to confirm that there is adequate room for the pond and the absorption
field.
The pond and septic designs must be coordinated to be certain that the
pond does not jeopardize designing a well functioning absorption field for
the owners.

RE: Homestead Parcel 4, Wildcat Ranch, numbered off of Lake Wildcat Road
Dear Boone:
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and
percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study
according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations Individual Sewage Disposal Systems
on June 2, 1994. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered.
Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest
convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system.
Proposed Construction:
The pl' e mai "ice is a relatively large multi-level house with a caretaker unit. There is a
total fvix-bedroom et� bin the residence.
Site Conditions:
The property is served by the treated surface water supply furnished by the subdivision. The site
is a lot in the Wildcat Ranch PUD above and to the north of Wildcat Reservoir. The lot is large,
and the building envelope approximately 15 acres.
The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, is just
below the top of a ridge in a saddle and slopes gently to the East and Northwest at a grade of
approximately 10% to 15%. There aCe no irri a_g tion ditches in the area.
Subsurface Conditions:
Two soil profile pits were excavated about 10 feet from each of the the proposed absorption area
alternatives. Both were dug to a depth of eight feet. The lowerThe excavations encountered -no --
ground water. No bedrock was present within eight feet of the surface of the ground. The soil
texture within the upper profile hole was a silt loam topsoil, forty to sixty inches deep. grading
into a sandy clay with some increase in the clay content with depth. The silty loam topsoil
predominated in the lower profile hole to a depth of six feet where it had collapse. There was
some moisture content in the soils in each profile hole. There was some smearing and compaction
noted from the pressure of the excavating equipment used to prepare the profile holes..
Percolation Testing:
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the

approximate location shown on Figure 1. The twelve inch diameter test holes were hand dug at
the bottom of backhoe excavations, and several inches of gravel placed on the bottom of each
hole. In the upper group of percolation tests, the subsoil consisted of loam and a sandy clay
which extended to the depth of percolation test holes between forty-six and fifty-five inches. The
lower group of percolation test holes with depth varying from fifty=three to sixty nine inches, were
located in soils characterized as a silty loam.
The percolation holes were pre-soaked the morning of testing, eight hours before the percolation
test was begun. After the initial fillings, water was continuously added approximately every
twenty minutes for the immediate four hour period before beginning the percolation test. There
was some water remaining in all of the percolation test holes when the tests were begun.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the o�f
n�
clay soils located in the upper group above the pond have an -average percolation rate 3.^3�__
minutes per inch and would be acceptable for a conventionah'i tration design o_r the on-site
sewage system. Likewise, the -lower group of test holes that had an average percolation rate of 20
minutes per inch are suitable for conventional construction techniquues for the on-site wastewater
disposal system. There may be a limiting layer of shale bedrock at a depth of eight or nine feet on —
the lower portions of the building site. '
Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area
for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in
this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is
some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may
not have been evident at the time of this investigation. If further excavation reveals conditions
different from those described, additional evaluations may be necessary. This office should be
advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate the
recommendations.
