The field will have a flow splitter basin or D -box with baffle followed by 3 trenches, each with 13 chambers, for a total of 39 chambers. This department does not endorse any brand of products. This permit must be kept on-site during installation. The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. *Revegetation over the area of the field is very important for the functioning of the system. Pitkin County has guidelines that must be followed to assure the plants that are introduced are appropriate for the conditions of the area. The use of native plants is strongly encouraged. The OWS design was presented in a report prepared by COWC, Job No. 16109, dated June 14, 2004 and revision of October 16,2005. The OWS serves the 4 -bedroom 4400 SF cottage. On November 10, 2006 and April 17, 2007 COWC observed the installation of the septic tank. The 2000 -gallon 2 -compartment tank was installed. April 24, 2007 the site was visited. The four trenches were installed with 15 chambers in the southern two trenches and 16 chambers per trench in the northern two trenches. The pump line was installed with the air -release valve 8 feet from the septic tank. On May 28, 2007 the installation of the pump was observed. The inlet "tee" had been installed. An "As -built" is attached for the cottage. The components of the OWS appeared to be installed in general conformance with our plans and specifications. The revisions are based a change in living area to the cottage and more accurate placement of the percolation testing area on the site plan from our original design, dated November 14, 2003, under Job No. 16109W. All previous designs should be discarded to avoid confusion. The subsurface investigation was performed November 5, 2003. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has an approximate 4% slope to the northwest and a moderate cover of native grasses. The residence will be served by an onsite well located 132+ feet west of the proposed drain field. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A four-bedroom residence with a living area of 5500 square feet (ft) is proposed at the location pre- sented on Figures 1 and 2. The OWS was sized based on 4 bedrooms and 800 gallons per day (GPD) using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1400 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. If additional bedrooms in unfinished areas are possible, it is suggested that the OWS be constructed to handle the additional loading. The installation of a properly engineered OWS to serve future build -out can be cost effective. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was performed by digging three percolation holes, 36 to 38 inches deep and one profile pit at the locations indicated on Figure 2. Ground water was not encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 15 to 20 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 17 MPI. Percolation data is included as Table 1. RECOMMENDATIONS The installation must include a septic tank with an effluent filter and a gravelless chamber -trench drain field installed at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 800 GPD and a percolation rate of 17 MPI. The installation includes one 2000 -gallon, two- compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet and three chamber - trenches, each with one row of 13 chambers for a total of 39 chambers and 604.5 ft2 of infiltrative area. A flow splitter basin, or equivalent, is required to distribute effluent to the fields. Vehicle movement over the trench area during construction should be kept at a minimum to reduce compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the trenches. A native seed mix should be sown at the trench area. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the OWS. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years or more frequently, if needed. The effluent filter is to be cleaned during pumping or as needed. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other non -biodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized to reduce the frequency of pumping of the tank. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can use in excess of 1000 GPD. An additional 1000 GPD loading may flood and irreparably harm the system. We caution against the installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a water softener is detrimental to an OWS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the field, which will reduce performance of the field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. The design of the OWS is based on the treatment of domestic sewage only. No industrial or hazardous wastes should be introduced into the OWS. LIMITATIONS Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS.
