Durant - Suite F Aspen, CO 81611 Subject: Individual Sewage System Design for a Parcel of Land near Wildcat Reservoir Containing the Boathouse Dear Andy, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., has performed a soils study and percolation testing for the design and construction of a septic system for the proposed residence at the subject site. This letter details our design recommendations and some thoughts on alternatives. Proposed Construction and Building Site: The boathouse is a two room changing and storage facility with one bathroom and a mop sink. The facility is provided water from the subdivision water treatment plant drawing from the reservoir. This site is several hundred feet from the Wildcat Reservoir. The slowly permeable soils do present significant limitations to the construction of an on-site sewage disposal system. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the replacement absorption field slopes at a 10% grade to the Northeast. There are no natural drainages or irrigation ditches in the area. Minimum Pitkin County Requirements: The percolation rates measured in the clays were averaged at an average of 200 minutes per inch. Soils with such a slow percolation rate are considered unsuitable. The minimum Pitkin County requirements for this installation are, therefore that a site-specific design be done by a Registered Professional Engineer. On the basis of a calculated average daily sewage flow to the system of approximately 100 gallons per day, it is possible to use evapotranspiration. This flow would require a septic tank of 750 gallons minimum volume, and a minimum of 1110 square feet of evapotranspiration field, using an {� evaporation/absorption rate of .135 gallons per square foot per day. Recommended On-site Wastewater Disposal Design: We recommend that you use a 1250 -gallon concrete septic tank with manhole lids and risers to the surface of the ground. The extra P.O. An evapotranspiration -absorption system (ETA) using 10 -inch diameter SB -2 graveless leaching chamber system seems suitable on this site. Therefore, the suggested design incorporate the alternatives listed below. We recommend that the septic system consist of three ETA trenches, each 100 feet long. 1) It is advisable to excavate these trenches as shallow as possible, to a depth of no more than two and one-half feet. The SB -2 pipe should be bedded in sand with at least seven inches of uniform "masonry -grade" sand above. 2) It is advisable to use a distribution box to equalize the flow to each of the trenches. The distribution box, placed between the septic tank and the ETA trenches, is connected to each individual trench with a piece of solid PVC pipe. 3) The sump/cleanout structure, available from the SB -2 supplier, is recommended at the far end of each ETA trench. Durant - Suite F Aspen, CO 81611 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design for a Parcel of Land near Wildcat Reservoir Containing the Boathouse Dear Andy, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., Performed a soils study and percolation testing to design a septic system for the proposed facility. We conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on Thursday, June 17, 1993. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Existing Construction and Site: The single -story boathouse contains only one bathroom and two small changing rooms. The boathouse is located on a gently sloping parcel to the Northwest of Wildcat Reservoir. There is an existing water treatment plant on the property that furnishes treated drinking water to the boathouse. The site presents a significant limitation to the construction of an on-site sewage disposal system due to soils with slow percolation. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit, within 40 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated. The excavation revealed no groundwater or bedrock present within eight and one-half feet of the surface of the ground. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were excavated to a depth of two feet with a backhoe before our arrival at the site. We completed the percolation hole preparation by hand -digging a twelve -inch diameter hole in the pit and placing several inches of gravel on the bottom of each hole. In general, the subsoil consisted of about one foot of clay loam topsoil overlaying dense clays to a depth of ninety-seven inches. These brown clays were characteristically stiff and moist. The soils were well consolidated. P.O. This testing was performed in three shallow holes excavated with a backhoe to a depth of two feet and with small hand dug holes in the bottom of each. Pre-soaking consisted of adding water approximately four hours and one hour before beginning the percolation test. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the clay soils have an average percolation rate more than 200 minutes per inch and are not acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described.
