Box 10493 408 Aspen Airport Business Center Aspen, Colorado 81612 Attention: Walter Boronski Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design for the Rose Guest Residence, Homestead Tract 7, Wildcat Ranch Subdivision, numbered as 5941 Lake Wildcat Drive, Snowmass Village, CO 81615 Dear Walter, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., has performed a soils study and percolation testing to design a septic system for the residence at the subject site. We conducted this study according to Article 5 of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulation on Monday, September 11, 1995. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered at that time. Please furnish this letter and a copy of the enclosed data sheet to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department or the Snowmass Village Building Department at your earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The two-story guest residence is a four-bedroom and four and one-half bathroom house of 2350 square feet of living area. There is also a planned future main residence of no more than five bedrooms to be constructed on the property at a later date. Site Conditions: The site is a large lot located on the southwest end of Wildcat Lake. The terrain is irregular with numerous hillsides and draws. The area of the property designated for the construction of the house and guest house is on hillside slopes about 300 feet from and 80 feet above the water level in the lake. The building envelope for -the guest house is located on a sloping ridge. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes to the Southeast at about a 20% grade. Most of the area is open meadow vegetated with sagebrush and scrub oak. The southerly portions of the building envelope are forested with aspen. P.O. Box 6961 Snowmass Village, CO. 81615 Office (303) 923.3289 Home (303) 923.2766 Hansen Construction Rose Caretaker Residence Percolation Tests Homestead Lot 7, Wildcat Ranch Subdivision 09/26/95 Page 2 Water to the residences is provided by the Wildcat Ranch Homeowners' water supply system treated by the plant just below the reservoir dam. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile, within 10 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated in conjunction with the construction. This excavation revealed that no groundwater or bedrock was present within nine feet of the surface of the ground. In addition, there were several test hole borings done by Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The closest of these., Boring #5 (elevation 8256 ft.), was about 75 feet from percolation test hole P-1 and revealed a sandy, gravely clay to a depth of twenty-two feet. In general, the subsoil in the soil profile excavation consisted of a silty clay loam topsoil about five feet thick overlaying a sandy clay with small cobbles and claystone shales, two to five inches in diameter, to the depth of profile excavation. The soil exhibited some tendency to swell when wet. Percolation Testi: The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figures 1 and 2. The test holes were excavated earlier by the excavator. Each of the test holes was in a different soil type. P-1 was dug to a depth of four feet and in a soil type that textured as a rocky, stony, sandy clay. Test hole P-2 was in a harder tan sandy clay. Test hole P-3 was dug deeper, but was still in the silty clay loam topsoil. Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area east of the guest residence. This testing was performed in three shallow holes excavated with hand tools to a depth of four to five feet. The percolation holes were pre-soaked before our testing by adding water eight hours before beginning the percolation test and refilling every two hours after the initial soaking. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. The varibility in the measured rates can be explained by the different soil conditions encountered. These results indicate the sandy clay soils have an average percolation rate of 29 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria. Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions Hansen Construction Rose Caretaker Residence Percolation Tests Homestead Lot 1, Wildcat Ranch Subdivision 09/26/95 Page 3 and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soil across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may require additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of these situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office.
