Any changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer prior to them being made. Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin County ISDS regulations. Engineer design is for one 2500 and two 2000 gallon concrete septic tanks for a total of 6500 gallons. Effluent is pumped to distribution manholes and distributed to 9 beds each 3 units wide by 15 units long for a total of 405 units. 2 feet of sand is placed below infiltrator units and a four foot separation between bottom of units and bedrock will be maintained during installation. Design is based on a perc rate of 80 mpi. A 30% reduction for infiltrator in beds is taken because of the 2 feet of sand below the units. This department does not endorse any brand of products. The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation, verify the correct sand is used, and submit an as -built letter to this department. This department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before final approval of the ISDS permit. Application for an individual sewage disposal system is hereby submitted. The ISDS was constructed per the plans prepared by SGM and dated 10/01/01. The system was constructed in two stages; the first being the beds and piping to the beds, which was completed in the fall of 2001, this spring, the piping, tanks, pumps and distribution manholes were completed. Construction was observed periodically by SGM throughout both stages of construction. The only deviation from the approved plans was the deletion of the PVC liner downstream of the beds. Prior to the construction of each bed, a pothole was done to determine the depth to the claystone bedrock. The depth encountered was typically 6' to 7'. The infiltrator units were then placed a minimum of 2' into existing ground, thus eliminating the need for the downhill liner. The general contractor for the work was Keelty Construction and the installation contractor was Welch Excavating. Please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions regarding this matter. I have observed the construction of nine leach field beds consisting of infiltrator units with 2" PVC pipe with perforation at four -foot centers hung in the infiltrators, two feet of sand and a minimum two feet of suitable soil. I directed the contractor, Welch Excavating, to dig profile holes for every two beds as the field was constructed up the hill. The profile holes were completed to ensure that two feet of suitable soil was available to provide separation from the shale bedrock. I observed the profile holes and we found there was more suitable soil than was found in the soils report. We were able to push the beds into the ground such that the top of infiltrator was generally at the existing grade on the lower side of the bed. Due to this, I ded the contractor to delete the installation of the liner on the downhill side of the beds. There was a consistent six- to seven -foot depth of suitable material in each of the profile hoes excavated. In fact, we did not hit solid bedrock in any of the excavated holes. The contractor completed all nine beds and the piping to the beds from an area where the distribution manholes will be placed. We previously performed percolation testing for the septic design (report dated June 15, 2001) and a subsurface study for foundation design of the proposed residence at the site, (report dated September 25, 2000), Job No. 100 617. The current work is a supplement to our previous work. 0 005 Two profile pits (Pits 6 and 7) were excavated on the lot at the approximate locations shown on Fig. 1. Graphic logs of the subsurface conditions encountered in the pits are shown on Fig. 2. Four percolation test holes (P-6 thorough P-8) were excavated at the approximate locations shown on Fig. 1. The subsoils exposed in the Profile Pits ,— �° ��` F-'- consisted of about l/2 foot of topsoil overlying medium hard weathered claystone with hard claystone shale bedrock below about 4 and 7 feet and extend to the pit depths of 61/2 and 8 feet. No free water was observed in the pits and the bedrock materials were slightly moist. Percolation test holes were hand dug in the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and soaked with water on August 29, 2001. Percolation testing was conducted on August 30, 2001 by a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The tests were performed on the weathered claystone. The percolation test results are summarized in Table I and indicaw average percolation rates between about 40 and 80 minutes per inch. A civil engineer should design the septic disposal system. We previously performed a subsurface study for foundation design of the proposed residence at the site, report 10 dated September 25, 2000, Job No. 100 617. The current work is a supplement to our previous study. Six profile pits were excavated on the lot at the approximate locations shown on Fig. 1. Graphic logs of the subsurface conditions encountered in the pits are shown on Fig. 2. Due to shale bedrock encountered at Pits 3 through 6 and loose fill over bedrock at Pit 1, only the Pit 2 area was tested for percolation rates. Five percolation test holes (P-1 through P-5) were excavated at the approximate locations shown on Fig. 1. The subsoils exposed in Pit 2 at the percolation site consisted of about 1/2 foot of topsoil overlying stiff very sandy clay above medium hard weathered claystone with hard claystone shale bedrock below about 51/2 feet and to the pit depth of 71/2 feet. Laboratory test results on samples obtained from the pits are provided on Fig. 4 and summarized in Table I. No free water was observed in the pits and the soils and bedrock were slightly moist to moist. Percolation test holes were hand dug in the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and soaked with water on June 6, 2001. Percolation testing was conducted on June 7, 2001 by a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The percolation test results are summarized in Table II and indicate average percolation rates between about 18 and 30 minutes per inch. A civil engineer should design the septic disposal system.
